It is not illegal for consumers to boycott companies. The Supreme Court in 1982 ruled the First Amendment protects Americans’ rights to protest private businesses.

Okay, guess I'm technically not boycotting Tesla. I just straight up can't afford a car, not in this economy. Nor do I care, because there's a bus stop just down the street. Not that I'm intimidated by Trump because I'm not American and he can't prosecute this shit even domestically.

Something something free market?

[–] rizo@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 hour ago

Funny how they preach "the market will regulate itself" until it regulates itself in the "wrong direction". And all of a sudden something needs to be done by "the government".

[–] Wilco@lemm.ee 9 points 2 hours ago

Soooo ... Trump thinks he can force people to buy Teslas? Just like Elon is trying (and failing) to sue companies for not advertising on Twitter.

[–] BmeBenji@lemm.ee 3 points 2 hours ago

“Mr. Trump, you just attempted to overthrow the government of the Leader of the Free World™️, convinced the supreme court to hand you unlimited authority, and you still got elected president! What are you gonna do now?”

“I’m going to Disneyland!”

[–] wanderwisley@lemm.ee 8 points 3 hours ago

Nazis helping fund nazis…

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 11 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

So, a boycott is illegal, protest of Tesla outlets is terrorism. Do We the People get to have any say?

[–] FanciestPants@lemmy.world 6 points 3 hours ago

Trump: No, and now it's illegal for you not to like me.

[–] Slax@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

Uh.. You still get to choose what you wear... As long as it is on this approved list of companies

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 1 points 31 minutes ago

And a MAGA cap, of course.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

I'm assuming Kanye's Yeezy trash will be approved by the Ministry of Freedom?

[–] asteriskeverything@lemmy.world 8 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

This shit is such bottom of the barrel trump antics

He has always cried fowl when anyone is critical

[–] asteriskeverything@lemmy.world 3 points 5 hours ago

Let alone try to exercise their limited power

[–] LeninOnAPrayer@lemm.ee 1 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

If it was one of his businesses I'd agree. But this is bottom of the barrel AND makes him look like a weak little lapdog for Musk.

[–] asteriskeverything@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

This is his playbook with politics, business, PR in general

[–] Curmudge_john@lazysoci.al 3 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

They're panicking. The boycotts are working.

I don't think they're panicking, this is how they always behave. Trump is saying a moronic thing again to draw attention from the actual important authoritarian shift onto "what stupid meaningless shit did he say". It's the same fucking playbook every time.

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 20 points 10 hours ago

Felon rapist says what?

[–] anarchiddy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 19 points 10 hours ago

Elon to Trump: "I can't fund 2026 midterm candidates if Tesla goes broke"

Trump:

[–] segabased@lemmy.zip 25 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Even if boycotting were illegal how in the fuck would that be enforceable?

[–] glitch1985@lemmy.world 15 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Simple, just put out an EO requiring every citizen to purchase a Tesla.

[–] futatorius@lemm.ee 9 points 8 hours ago

He'd also need to put out an EO making it illegal to wipe your ass with an EO.

[–] peoplebeproblems@midwest.social 31 points 13 hours ago (8 children)

Wait what

How the fuck are you gonna force me to buy a Tesla

[–] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 5 points 10 hours ago (2 children)

Haven't you seen all those cops outside the Tesla shops recently?

[–] Justas@sh.itjust.works 1 points 28 minutes ago

I think that even if I wanted to buy anything from Tesla, I would turn around if I saw a bunch of cops outside of it.

Pity he's a liar and won't actually use one, I like the thought of him being on fire.

[–] medusadeluxe@lemm.ee 13 points 13 hours ago

The thought of him on fire gives me more joy than it should.

[–] GaMEChld@lemmy.world 4 points 11 hours ago

I don't think former Presidents are even allowed to drive. Current ones, definitely not.

This seems hypocritical. Didn't all those "Snowflakes" boycott Budweiser last year?

[–] tpyo@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

Yes, but no (not trying to be contrarian) because I felt it was definitely before last year

The Budweiser boycott started 2 years ago April 2023

But YES those are the same snowflakes

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 4 points 4 hours ago

Yeah, but: Budweiser ghey.

Checkmate, liberals!

[–] mstrk@lemmy.world 15 points 15 hours ago
[–] Enkers@sh.itjust.works 104 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

Someone's being a pissbaby because nobody wants to buy stuff from fascists. Lul.

This makes me think he just has no idea what a boycott is, because for it to be illegal, purchasing a Tesla would some how have to be legally mandate.

[–] agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works 3 points 5 hours ago

This is probably just a ploy to boost Tesla sales among his followers. And honestly, I'll play the part of "owned lib" if it transitions MAGAs to EVs. Better than rolling coal.

[–] officermike@lemmy.world 26 points 15 hours ago

Don't give them ideas.

Trump said “radical left lunatics” are “illegally and collusively” boycotting Tesla, which the president described as one of the best automakers in the world. This action, Trump said, was meant as an attack on Musk and what he stands for.

It is not illegal for consumers to boycott companies. The Supreme Court in 1982 ruled the First Amendment protects Americans’ rights to protest private businesses.

This is pretty much the reason high ranking government officials are supposed to be divested....

Also:

Tesla shares popped more than 4% in Tuesday morning trading. In addition to Trump’s promotion of Tesla, the stock may also be helped by a note to clients from Morgan Stanley advising them to pick up shares after the steep decline.

Sounds like Morgan Stanley doesn't want to be left holding the bag...

https://www.cnbc.com/2025/01/13/morgan-stanley-ups-tesla-target-gives-bull-case-of-800.html

Less than two months ago they predicted it would go up to 800 so they told people to buy it...

Instead it dropped to 200, and they're still telling people to buy it.

When an investment company just always tells people to buy a stock regardless of what happens, it usually means they're heavily invested, so the higher the price the more they make.

So there likely is illegal manipulation happening, it's just trying to do the opposite of what's happening

Hey, anyone heard from the My Pillow guy lately? It's almost like there's been a dozen or more recent examples of why it's a bad idea to tie your political beliefs to your business.

Nice! Turn teslas into rolling MAGA bumper stickers!

What I love about this that it already takes twice as much to insure a model Y to my comparably sized EV. if Teslas are gonna get disproportionately vandalized I wouldn’t be shocked if insurance premiums will go up further. So even if the cars value drops, the movement can still offset that with increasing the cost of ownership.

[–] BrianTheeBiscuiteer@lemmy.world 5 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

I'm kind of hoping that between MAGA bros buying Teslas to support Musk and leftists buying other EVs because it's better for the environment we'll effectively retire internal combustion engines.

[–] notsoshaihulud@lemmy.world 2 points 9 hours ago

Yeah, that will happen because someone will have to buy up the devaluing used Tesla stock for cheap. My schadenfreude comes from thinking about how surprised they will be when they realize their insurance premiums are up.

[–] kryptonianCodeMonkey@lemmy.world 28 points 16 hours ago (3 children)

"It's illegal to boycott" translates to "You're legally required to buy this product". Anyone who can't see that that is completely moronic bullshit already has there head up Trump and/or Elon's ass for the delicate aroma.
