Ireland’s taoiseach has denounced anti-immigration comments made by Conor McGregor as the MMA fighter visited the White House before a St Patrick’s Day meeting with Donald Trump.

McGregor said “Ireland is on the cusp of losing its Irishness” and that an “illegal immigration racket” was “running ravage on the country”.

Last week, Donald Trump singled out “Conor” – who last year was found liable for sexual assault after a civil trial – as one of his favourite Irish people.

Dressed in a green business suit to mark Ireland’s national day, McGregor was at the White House at Trump’s invitation and participated in an impromptu Q&A session with reporters. “There are rural towns in Ireland that have been overrun in one swoop,” he said, speaking in the White House briefing room alongside the president’s press secretary, Karoline Leavitt.

It’s wild for someone Irish to be railing against immigration. Its like all the Cuban folks railing against immigration currently: know the history of your people and have an ounce of empathy.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 hours ago

If you can't see the irony of an Irish dude going to the US Whitehouse to complain about immigrants then you need to work on your sense of humor

[–] mhague@lemmy.world 3 points 2 hours ago

The loud drunk that beats up old people if they criticize his product is conservative?

[–] drmoose@lemmy.world 12 points 4 hours ago

Guy who gets hit on the head for money shouldn't be listened to ever.

It's so goddamn predictable, isn't it?

[–] RageAgainstTheRich@lemmy.world 14 points 23 hours ago

If trump said he loved epstein, his supporters would go "... actually he is a pretty good guy. Democrats framed him using hunter bidens laptop. Hillary's emails showed they wanted to kill him for actually trying to fight AGAINST pedophiles... have i seen the emails? No but all the emails have been deleted and trump said he read them and then deleted them to protect the safety of children. And i trust him because god appointed him president.. Also why are you questioning me? Sleepy Biden can't even speak correctly! Why are you not questioning your dear biden!? You fucking democ-rat libtard! 😡"

His walk really annoys me. Like I know he would knock my ass out but come on dudes a fucking idiot.

Stands to reason that a dude who got good at punching and being punched in the head doesn’t have the most nuanced take.

Also, are all the people Trump supports convicted of sexual crimes.

No one here in Ireland likes him.

[–] 60d@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Thank you for speaking up! Canadian of Irish ancestry here and I honestly thought he was a national treasure. But we don't often see news of Ireland.

[–] Irelephant@lemm.ee 4 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago)

Check this thread (on reddit unfortunately). The comments really sum up our sentiment towards him. https://safereddit.com/r/ireland/comments/1jddev6/that_says_it_all/

He’s a total piece of shit

[–] bizzle@lemmy.world 33 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Who could have possibly thought that someone who beats the hell out of guys for a living would be a piece of shit damn

[–] KickMeElmo@sopuli.xyz 44 points 1 day ago (1 children)

To be fair, there are a bunch of counterexamples. It definitely feels on-point with this one though.

[–] SpraynardKruger@lemm.ee 7 points 1 day ago

True, but even some of the counterexamples have counterexamples of their past behavior. Concussions are complex brain injuries that can be (and often are) personality altering. Organized sports leagues, including MMA, will go to great lengths to make sure the transgressions of their star athletes are swept under the rug.

[–] slaneesh_is_right@lemmy.org 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

There are a lot of super normal nice people who do mma.

[–] anomnom@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 day ago (2 children)

How many punches and kicks in the head before they aren’t nice and normal anymore though?

I know that bare knuckles are supposed to limit the velocity (and thus impact force) of punches, but it still seems unlikely it’s not doing any damage. Especially if heading a soccer ball is bad.

[–] drmoose@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago

We know for a fact that TBIs (traumatic brain injures) can cause significant character change and even drive people crazy not even mentioning cognitive decline.

Everyone knew of TBI effects in boxing for decades so its not some new revelation. Even historically there are records of fighters dramatically changing character when suffering a TBI. Phineas Gage is super famous example from 19th century where railroad worker got brain stabbed and turned super aggressive despite not having physical injuries, his friends said "he was no longer Cage".

These people are literally brain damaged 🙄

[–] futatorius@lemm.ee 3 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

I know that bare knuckles are supposed to limit the velocity

No you don't. For a given amount of muscle force, a bare-knuckles fist will be lighter (and thus easier to accelerate) than a fist with a glove on it. Gloves disperse the striking force, giving the impulse more of a low-frequency component, versus bare-knuckle strikes, which make contact in a much smaller area and transmit some of the energy at higher frequency. So, gloves give more a thud than a sharp hit that might cause a cut.

[–] anomnom@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

Sorry I guess I should have phrased it as “the common argument is that bare hands are safer than gloves”

[–] HellsBelle@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 day ago

Always has been and always will be.

[–] answersplease77@lemmy.world 47 points 1 day ago (1 children)

this lowlife is among the worst to represent the Irish people

Funny, the guy who invited him is a lowlife who is among the worst to represent the American people.

[–] xc2215x@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago

No surprise he was invited there.

[–] notsoshaihulud@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago

totally on brand with trumpism

[–] NatakuNox@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Conor McGregor in the white house for an offical visit. It's as absurd as having someone like Mike Tyson in the white house. Ya he's famous, but shouldn't be held up by our government for any reason.

[–] rabber@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

So a guy whose job is to get punched in the face repeatedly is speaking to the nation live from the white house

Interesting

[–] iamai@lemm.ee 1 points 22 hours ago

Nothing is shocking anymore!

[–] ech@lemm.ee 30 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Happy St Patrick's Day to everyone except this piece of shit (and those like him).

[–] futatorius@lemm.ee 2 points 5 hours ago

If St Paddy drove the snakes out, why's McGregor still there?

[–] nodiratime@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Basket of deplorables

[–] ragingdachshund@lemm.ee 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It’s cute how he thinks he matters

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 5 points 1 day ago

Well our fucking president gave him a platform so I guess he matters a little.

[–] Allonzee@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

He's one of those athletes using all the muscles except the one that matters.

Useful idiot stooge.

His cocaine habit is on par with Elon’s ketamine habit, unhinged like his shin bone.

[–] BigLime@lemmy.ml 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Honestly I thought I was reading the onion here

[–] Nfamwap@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

It really does get harder and harder to tell these days.

Many countries are doing mass immigration to goose GDP to hide a recession.

Looking at Ireland they have doubled immigration, meaning they too are goosing GDP.

They also have a housing crisis as well, so its clearly being done for fake economic growth at the expense of the poor.

[–] futatorius@lemm.ee 1 points 5 hours ago

Sort of, except that it's real economic growth. And skyrocketing property prices aren't being solely driven by a couple percent per year population growth. There are other factors besides that absurdly crude and obviously false model.
