Great pick by @realDonaldTrump . 10 years ago, Republicans were the party of big business and Dems stood for the little guys, but today the tables have completely turned. People forget that the current antitrust actions against Big Tech were started under the first Trump admin.

Andy Yen, Proton CEO, on X

[–] MoonlightFox@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Interesting read to get some perspective on this.

https://medium.com/@ovenplayer/does-proton-really-support-trump-a-deeper-analysis-and-surprising-findings-aed4fee4305e

I thought it was disappointing and unnecessary for Andy to say anything at all about this, and especially in support of any of the actions of the Trump admin, but I have personally decided to let it slide. That article is one of the reasons. But I still don't think it is ideal.

To me, the point is less about him being MAGA and more about him alienating a massive portion of his userbase and then completely botching the PR response by doubling down and failing to apologize or seemingly even understand why what he said matters to people.

Also his either inability to understand that Gail Slater sucks complete ass or his refusal to understand that fact. A leader in privacy should not be praising someone like her and celebrating the departure of Lina Khan. The discussion about whether it's incompetence or maliciousness is less important to me.

When I emailed their support team about this, they went real fucking weird on the response.

They linked to that medium post too. They linked to a random Reddit post.

They said things like, "He can't be racist", which is fucking weird because I was pointing out that I don't want a company that focuses on privacy to be licking the boot of any government. Which is extra strange they didn't bring that up at all.

Proton and their whole company is suspicious as fuck. I absolutely believe if their company starts to flounder financially, they're going to sell access - no question.

Tbh a lot of their decisions makes it seem like they're just more interested in enterprise customers than anything else, which may be coloring their CEO's political views as well

but where's the Proton Drive application for Linux!? ... I sincerely hope Proton is working on it

It appears the author didn't read the blog posts they linked:

"Over the next few months, we’ll enhance the app further by adding more new features and releasing the Software Development Kit (SDK) that the new macOS app is based on, which we anticipate will serve as the basis for a highly requested Linux app."

It sounds like they haven't even started. Hopefully the SDK covers most of the functionality and the Linux app is minimal additional effort.

This bothers me more than it should.

Shoddy writeups quickly inject reference links just to make their page look more trustworthy and SEO-friendly, while also not actually READING the links they add.

It's a bit of a joke to have a supposed privacy company and then not have any support for Linux

And to close down the Mastodon account.

Wait what? I was just about to switch to Proton from gmail to avoid giving oligarchs more money and data?

They really supported the fascists?

Hey thanks! Massive list, do you have a personal short list? Main thing is I need lots of storage.

[–] markvandijk@lemmy.ml 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I don't think he use all those services. If you want storages with like > 1 TB you'll probably want to set up your own NAS and make back ups. Currently I use StartMail, 30GB storage and if you ask my personal list I should say use them for their disposable email service if that is what you're looking for. If you don't bother having disposable emails I suggest go for Tuta/StartMail. Tuta has a friendly userface and 500GB storage, while StartMail has less storage but more options.

[–] RecursiveParadox@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Thank you that simplifies things. Not sure I want to store everything local, but yeah that's an option.

Although looking deeper into what I found, initially, potentially disturbing about Proton mail, I'm not sure I should rule it out yet.

And to repeatedly fail to update their github with the latest source code for their mobile apps, and to not have their apps on f-droid, and to not support notifications of any kind on a degoogled android OS, and to not support monero payments, and to add a Zoom button to everyone's calendar by default with no disclaimer about using Zoom, and to limit custom domain aliases.

[–] Ulrich@feddit.org 7 points 1 month ago

and to not support notifications

Not supporting UnifiedPush is also another hilarious oversight.

Just joined tuta a week ago from jumping ship out of Proton. They had a pretty nice sale going on.

[–] moreeni@lemm.ee 0 points 1 month ago (2 children)

None of these provide Docs and Drive services.

[–] lemmeBe@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago

And none of these will stick it to you on multiple fronts if it ever comes down to it.

You want safety, diversify. You want convenience, go all in.

[–] Alk@sh.itjust.works -1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

None of these incorporate email aliases automatically with a password manager

Kept me waiting long enough that I’m no longer a Proton user. Selfhosted Nextcloud goes weeeeeeeeee
