The checks, according to Virginia residents who have received them in the mail, are being sent with a note that specifically credits Youngkin for the money, telling the taxpayer they are "receiving this rebate because Governor Glenn Youngkin recently signed a bill passed by the 2023 Virginia General Assembly."

That’s pretty terrible

Just like the letter I got from trump with my pitiful little stimulus check. Did the asshole have the nerve to sign the checks too?

[–] tacosplease@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

Was surprised to see he did not sign the checks.

[–] tacosplease@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

Was pissed when I got mine. The letter did not name or provide any details about the bill. Just - here's $200 because of Glen Youngkin. I should donate it to a Democrat in a swing district.

Just $200 for your rights women. That includes your daughters.

I work in local government and my boss would lose her everloving shit if anyone suggested something like this. Buuut I'm also pretty sure no one outside of my office (which, to be fair, handles the elections) ever stops to think, "hey could this be construed as encouraging people to vote some type of way?" So basically, this could, and probably is, a way to not-so-subtly buy votes, but it could also be people in charge not using their goddamn heads for one fucking second to think about the optics.

I...need a vacation.

Unless, of course, that is the point.

I feel like this is so obviously going to be seen this way that even if you have one myopic idiot who just wasn't thinking, there's no way those goes through the entire team without someone noticing. No way at all.

[–] frickineh@lemmy.world 10 points 11 months ago

Oh yeah, I would be 0% surprised, especially given the letter with it. Youngkin is a piece of shit. It's just that there are also a surprising number of things like this that are suggested with zero sense of how it would play that get stopped behind the scenes because some of the people behind the scenes try not to be pieces of shit.

[–] Aviandelight@mander.xyz 26 points 11 months ago

Fuck it I'll gladly take the rebate and still not vote for that useless piece of shit.

Republicans stopped trying to hide their corruption the moment Donald Trump came down that fake golden escalator

I got the direct deposit. I also (early)voted Democrat down the ballot. I'll continue to do so until I can't vote anymore.

I might actually donate the $400 to the Dems come to think of it

[–] anon_8675309@lemmy.world 21 points 11 months ago

Buy them votes!

[–] carl_dungeon@lemmy.world 18 points 11 months ago

Yeah I got it as a direct deposit. I would much rather it went to our teachers and firefighters, as I’d rather have those things funded.

Legal bribery. It's okay when the government does it apparently.
