Everything to do with the USA's own Imperial Backyard. From hispanics to the originary peoples of the americas to the diasporas, South America to Central America, to the Caribbean to North America (yes, we're also there).

Post memes, art, articles, questions, anything you'd like as long as it's about Latin America. Try to tag your posts with the language used, check the tags used above for reference (and don't forget to put some lime and salt to it).

Here's a handy resource to understand some of the many, many colloquialisms we like to use across the region.

On this day in 1961, the Bay of Pigs invasion took place when a force of 1400 Cuban exiles, funded and led by the U.S., landed on the southwest coast of Cuba in a failed attempt at overthrowing the revolutionary Cuban government.

Covertly financed and directed by the U.S. government, the operation took place at the height of the Cold War and its failure led to major shifts in international relations between Cuba, the United States, and the Soviet Union.

The coup attempt came after the Cuban government expropriated property from American capitalists. U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower allocated $13.1 million to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in March 1960 for use against Castro's government. With the aid of Cuban counter-revolutionaries, the CIA proceeded to organize an invasion.

On April 14th, 1961, a squadron of U.S. B-26 bombers camouflaged with Cuban insignias begin a two-day bombing campaign of Cuban airports, destroying a large portion of the Cuban air force.

On the night of April 17th, an invasion force of approximately 1400 Cuban exiles and CIA officers landed on the beach at Playa Girón in the Bay of Pigs. After a few days, the insurgents became overwhelmed by the Cuban army. President Kennedy refused to provide air support for the operation.

The invasion's defeat solidified Castro's role as a national hero and strengthened Cuba-Soviet relations. Several Cuban exiles and two Americans were executed upon capture. Over 1,000 prisoners were exchanged for humanitarian aid from the U.S. government.

I really like that part about hypnagogic hallucinations along with dreams. they're a really nice place to find creative influence

[–] Wmill@hexbear.net 3 points 1 day ago

It's real fun though I do struggle putting some of it into words, for now it's mostly entertainment for me

Not to doxx myself, but there's a local artist who has been active for a couple of decades now painting the same fucking image over and over and over again. He has made what I'm fairly certain at this point are hundreds of paintings of the same imaginary landscape, and people buy it because he's semi-famous. And the art is just bad. It's not even a style issue, he's just not very good at painting. On one hand I almost have to admire the grift, on the other there are so many artists who can't survive off their art.

At least that guy could theoretically paint something better than a stick figure! Which this guy literally can't, he literally hasn't mastered stick figures, he keeps fucking up stick figures by like detaching the head or having gloops of paint flow over/from the stick figure.

Currently standing in the most overfilled train I've ever been in. If the next one I'm going to be in is as full I'm just going to lay down and give up

update: train is totally overfilled and late but I got a seat so I can't complain

What do markets think Trump will do when he installs a loyalist at the Fed?

Just set interest rates to zero and do bond buying to cap yields? That alone won't cause high/hyperinflation, it may cause some depreciation of exchange rate, but the real thing undermining the dollar both short and long term is the tariff flip flops. Trump's plan to get rid of income tax is much more dangerous.

My first 3 weeks as an app servant (Walmart Spark gig work) has gone pretty great. I made $1300 last week after expenses. Even factoring in self employment tax, it's way more than I would have made working a full time job. I was getting rejections from shit tier jobs that paid $600(pre-tax) a week.

Even if I end up making less and need to take some time off, I should be able to make this work until I find solid employment.

[–] hogslayer@hexbear.net 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

wow, that's like $67k per year (if it's consistent). crazy.

I watched Wandering Earth last night, it was alright. I loved the scene near the end where

spoilereveryone came back from the evacuation to help push the giant firing pin

but overall, it felt rushed, like it kept introducing new problems and then solving them either immediately or even offscreen. And the central plot driver of Jupiter just doing that felt very arbitrary.

Chicken nugget should be a term for a balled up chicken the same way loaf is used about cats.

Or we should start eating cats.

[–] SpiderFarmer@hexbear.net 1 points 1 day ago

I don't understand eating cats even putting aside stuff like various taboos. Just seems like bad eating.

I shouldn't be surprised that the authors of "To Each According to Their Space-Need: Communes in Outer Space" have zero understanding of dialectical materialism and are incapable of saying anything useful, but I am disappointed that such a good title was wasted by liberals.

[–] Parsani@hexbear.net 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This article explores lessons from three major communal movements—the Hutterites, kibbutzim, and 60s-era communes
