Organizers have called for 11 million people across country to participate this weekend in effort to ‘protect democracy’

The US will witness its second wave of protests in a fortnight on Saturday as organizers seek to turn discontent with Donald Trump’s presidency into a mass movement that will eventually translate into action at the ballot box.

More than 400 rallies are anticipated across the nation loosely organized by the group 50501, which stands for 50 protests in 50 states, one movement.

It is the fourth protest event to be staged by the group since Trump was inaugurated on 20 January. Previous events included a “No Kings Day” on President’s Day, 17 February, a theme adopted before Trump referred to himself as a king in a social media post days later.

The most important thing is the "11 million."

Studies have shown that as little as 3.5% of the population can cause a "Tipping Point," and create a trend. America has a population of 335 million people, so 3.5% is just bit over 11 million. They are trying to reach a tipping point with just the protesters alone. For every protester, there are many more at home, posting on social media, talking to their family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, etc.

Why is it they only have articles day of? It feels like they have a vested interest in making sure it is in public discourse without actually giving people any lead time.

So there's no coverage, and yet MILLIONS of people show up at hundreds of protests around the country? Somehow they heard about it.

This sounds like a YOU problem. Perhaps you should be a little more proactive and find the information you need, rather than waiting for the corporate mainstream media to spoon feed it to you. Shallow thinking like that is what got us here in the first place.

My point was more that I don't trust their motives.

Yeah, I also was frustrated, but on the other hand the date was known well in advance and the locations largely are the same as on 4/5.

Search lemmy for 50501 theres a ton of communities, including specific for many states. Theres a 50501 instance too. Theres also !inperson@slrpnk.net !Resist@fedia.io !AmericanResistanceNetwork@lemmy.world

Wake me up when "protests" is replaced with "riots".

[–] the_q@lemm.ee 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

No one's stopping you from rioting right now, big man.

[–] PlaidBaron@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Imagine thinking everyone on the internet is American.

[–] the_q@lemm.ee 3 points 1 day ago

Fair enough.

Ok. I like the energy but where was all this fervor when it came time to vote? I don't understand. I mean I do. Kamala was boring af but come on. We already had one round of Trump. What did y'all expect?!?!

[–] DeusUmbra@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

And it will continue to do nothing. Until the violence starts, nothing will change.

Good luck with that. People won't be willing to do a strike, at least not for any length of time that would make a real difference.

[–] aceshigh@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Realistically speaking how does that work? No one can afford to lose their job and necessary goods have to get purchased.

[–] aphlamingphoenix@lemm.ee 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

So idealistically (I know, there are regional, logistical, financial, and other challenges, but idealistically) the people on strike are actively pooling and distributing their resources to help the people who are put out worse by it. That hopefully sustains people long enough for the strike to win out and for people to return to work with their problems remedied.

[–] oppy1984@lemm.ee 0 points 1 day ago

This is the way.

[–] VasovagalSyncope@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

And he will still be in power afterwards.

We have to more than hold signs

Until protesters speak the same language as the state, the state won't hear it. Until then these are nothing but pressure release valves offered by the state
