The Pope's fucking dead.

He gave JD Vance three chocolate easter eggs, exchanged pleasantries for 17 minutes, and then keeled over and died.

What a way to go.

Israel-Palestine Conflict

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Sources on the fighting in Palestine against Israel. In general, CW for footage of battles, explosions, dead people, and so on:

UNRWA reports on Israel's destruction and siege of Gaza and the West Bank.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists
Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Pro-Russian Telegram Channels:

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language.
https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.
https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.
https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.
https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.
https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.
https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.
https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine Telegram Channels:

Almost every Western media outlet.
https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.
https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

Some smol news regarding the passing of His Holiness.

The newly minted president of Iceland, Halla Tómasdóttir, expressed her condolences on Facebook, as people do these days.

But instead of using the Icelandic style of his name, Frans páfi, she used his English name, Pope Francis, which made language scholars and conservationists furrow their brows and scold the president when the press asked them for their opinions.

The office of the President has declared that the president simply wished to tag His Holiness in the post but in her haste, forgot to put the @ sign. Which might work as an explanation except that His Holiness does not have an official Facebook page.

pepe-silvia Halla Tómasdóttir is an American agent planted to sell Iceland to the US so they can have extra leverage to buy Greenland out, spread the word

[–] anaesidemus@hexbear.net 10 points 57 minutes ago* (last edited 55 minutes ago) (1 children)

you joke but she was educated in some second rate American university, and she has the characteristics of a Large Adult Daughter thonk

oh and btw, Tómasdóttir is a patronym, she is referred to as Halla or Halla Tómasdóttir in all cases

Did JD drop the Pope?

[–] TechnoAnomie@hexbear.net 18 points 4 hours ago (6 children)

Maybe its a bit western-centric, but a local random good person I follow on xitter pointed out that the late pope was the most influential leftist of the last decade. Flawed, like any human, but yeah, that hit.

[–] SoyViking@hexbear.net 10 points 53 minutes ago

If you say "most influential western leftist" then maybe we can talk. But that is only because that is hardly a crowded field to begin with.

[–] combat_brandonism@hexbear.net 15 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

The fuck? Xi and the CPC, Diaz-Canel and the PCC, even Traore and the AES (maybe? idk enough to say whether they're just hammering on Sankara nostalgia but they seem cool) have all done more than a compradore archbishop who said some cool antiwar stuff at the end of his life. If 'leftist' includes the leader of one of the most reactionary institutions on the planet it's even more meaningless than I thought.

[–] TechnoAnomie@hexbear.net 1 points 51 minutes ago (1 children)

I understood it and was going with influential as inspirational and motivational to the largest and most diverse group of people, not the most radical. Maybe chinese and neighbors alone beat the numbers for Xi, which whom I don't think vibes much populism or direct impact. It's not "some cool antiwar stuff", which is kind of the official line of the church, it's the words about capitalism, inequality, climate change, billionaires, financial sector, calling Gaza every single day, and the limited but huge shifts about communism, feminism, and LGB (missed something there, I know), all while at the top of the reactionary central of the west for centuries.

Actual existing communism is great, but, I don't know, doesn't feel it moved the techtonic plates as much.

Actual existing communism is great, but, I don't know, doesn't feel it moved the techtonic plates as much.

Again, the fuck?

Members of the Catholic church: 1.4b
Population of China: 1.4b (then add Cuba, Laos, Venezuela, Bolivia, Vietnam, etc., etc. shit even Mexico and Brazil are AES compared to the Catholic church).

Lip service is worth more than eradicating extreme poverty, something the Church hasn't done despite that being its doctrinal mission for two millenia and being the largest single landowner on the planet. Francis's words as Pope barely offset his transphobia, much less making up for his role covering up abuse and ratting out actual liberation theologians.

Also he doesn't get LG credit lol. No changes to the priesthood, no marriage (that's one of their seven sacraments, so effectively continuing to treat queer Catholics as unworthy).

What no materialism does to a mfer. I never want to be called a 'leftist' again if this is all it takes to be the most influential one in a decade.

Bar is in hell.

[–] Leegh@hexbear.net 19 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

I mean, if we're basing "most influential" purely by number of people under their governance, Xi Jinping takes the cake here. And Xi is actually a socialist, the Pope is just a theocrat who said some cool things.

xi-lib-tears

Edit: I also think AMLO and Sheinbaum have him beat, but I bet Il Papa does land in the top ten in this imaginary ranking.

Former Nestle CEO appointed Chairman of the World Economic Forum

Former Nestle CEO, Vice Chairman Peter Brabeck-Letmathe; was, during an extraordinary meeting of the Board of Trustees, appointed WEF Chairman ad interim. This comes after the 87 year old Klaus Schwab resigned from the position.

In 2017, the businessman infamously stated that, and I quote:

Humans have no right to access free water.

Nestle has been embroiled in numerous controversies in recent years; namely, their usage of child slavery.

[–] CarmineCatboy2@hexbear.net 28 points 5 hours ago

Most gazans are minors and Lancet estimates of the famines/killings we saw put total deaths at close to 200k. That was in Oct 2023.

[–] municipalenthusiast@hexbear.net 38 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

For anyone who is interested in left wing/historical materialist inroads to discuss Christianity, i have been reading a physical copy of Parables as Subversive Speech : Jesus as Pedagogue of the Oppressed William R Herzog that i found in a used bookstore.

I cannot recommend it enough, it goes into various aspects of ancient Palestinian history from the worth of a talent to the treatment of day laborers by landowners' hired help, to the proportion of people within various classes in the time period discussed.

https://archive.org/details/parablesassubver0000herz

context- I am an ex Catholic turned transsexual communist, and while I may not follow the tenets of the Church anymore and have resentment for the harm it did to me and countless others, I recognize that it has provided comfort and can be a difficult framework to negotiate with. I'm sharing this less as "see, the Church is cool after all!!" and more "if you have the patience to actually sit down and talk to people, this may be a useful reference."

[–] plinky@hexbear.net 28 points 8 hours ago

maybe link it in christianity comm as well, so it wont get lost in thread meow-floppy

I am kinda sad to hear Pope Francis passed away, even though it was coming eventually. And I say this despite being somewhat atheist myself. In Argentina, Francis is know to some as "The Pope of the Atheists" because he was well liked among important groups of people for his militancy, not only at the head of the Catholic Church, but also during his days in the Argentinian Church. I have grown a great deal of respect for the man, of course I had a lot of disagreements with him but I don't think he was your regular super conservative Pope, far from it. It's kinda good to see he was deeply moved by the Genocide in Gaza, and he was personally invested in denouncing it until the very end of his life. That I can respect, despite our "spiritual" and political differences.

He really got under the skin of milei as well, he absolutely despised the Pope. Years ago he even called him, publicly, a "fucking Communist SOB" that is a "representative of the Devil in the Holy See". A while back he was shown a fragment of a interview an argentinian journalist did to the Pope, where he said that we should all be aware of "men without history that pretend to become saviors", he specifically mentioned that "this was the case with Adolf [Hitler]" and milei took great offense lmao and became very angry because he thought the Pope was talking about him. He is, indeed, a dangerous man without history, someone who has a messiah complex.

Francis also mantained some relationships with local Communist leaders and Socialists, especially those linked with the Church and/or doing charity work among the needy. His persona ideology however could be something along the lines of Social Justice. Truth is, he wasn't a rabid anti-Communist like pretty much all the other Popes, quite refreshing.

[–] thelastaxolotl@hexbear.net 24 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

hope the next pope also makes milei and the US catholics mad

[–] Riffraffintheroom@hexbear.net 20 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

What do you mean by a man without history?

[–] Torenico@hexbear.net 33 points 9 hours ago

He meant it in the way that people like Hitler were "complete unknowns" to the public, "outsiders" as they are called these days. Individuals whose personal history cannot be traced yet they present themselves as the ultimate saviors, people don't know who they really are, they are fooled and make a leap of faith for them. He lowkey attack milei, this absolutely unknown guy who claims he has all the answers and the key to progress and salvation, yet now that he holds power he uses it to literally kill people. He compared these men "without history" to Christ, whom he said we can know his history and how he died in the Cross. It was both a religious and political statement.
