The nice thing about a revival like this is that, if it sucks, you can ignore it more easily because the original run is already a complete piece.

And, if it manages to be good, that’s all gravy.

I thought they would just pick up where they left off. Pull a Simpsons where everyone stays the same age forever. I don’t really care for a new dynamic. Our current timeline sucks 😂 Plus that means cottons probably dead.

[–] sploosh@lemmy.world 37 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Cotton dies in the last season of the original run. Dude's been dead for years.

[–] Zahille7@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Dale blows up Hank's shed as tribute for Cotton iirc

[–] WhyIAughta@lemm.ee 4 points 2 days ago

To be fair I may not have made it till the last season. 2009 was a rough year 😂

Mild SpoilerCotton died in the original run. There was a whole episode about it.

Though I do hope Buck Strickland is still kicking lol. The man was a hot mess, but he had some hilarious moments.

Nooo Ladybird is dead then. 😭

[–] NatakuNox@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago

You shut your mouth! She's at a farm

[–] Shinji_Ikari@hexbear.net 6 points 2 days ago

twist: Cotton got robot legs, is off somewhere doing something absolutely awful

[–] alaphic@lemmy.world 18 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Really? I mean, I liked KotH as much as the next guy but I honestly can't think of much the original series left unsaid that we desperately need to hear at this point... Right?

(Unless they've managed to somehow resurrect Brittany Murphy... In which case Mike Judge can literally closed-fist punch my mother in the face as frequently as he wants, idegaf.)

It's going to be a lot of "that homespun wisdom being ratcheted up to 11 and slathered onto topics of today" which will likely get patronizing quickly, especially if they try to make fun of the younger generation without understanding them.

Maybe I'm wrong but

[–] alaphic@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

I hope I'm wrong, but I almost immediately got strong 'gonna make a lot of alt-righty type pronoun joke' type vibes that I have a feeling will end up being satirized in a way that is so OTT that either they'll end up just coming off as edgelord cringe or will loop so far around they completely miss the point and become unironically MAGA talking points.

My biggest hope is that since brittany Murphey and Tom petty have passed, they will tragically kill off luanne and lucky in a truck accident so that Peggy and hank will be raising Lasagna Grace. I really want dee dee to have abandoned GH too, since cotton died, so since Peggy and hank never had more kids, they just adopted GH and Gracie. That's what I want this show to be about. I've been hoping this since it was first announced.

I'm surprised by how excited I am for this show to come out!

[–] TORFdot0@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It’s going to be a cash grab. I will be skipping. Maybe I’ll watch it later after the Hulu run finishes and reviews of it in its entirety are available

[–] Stern@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The newer Beavis and Butthead's were alright but not amazing. Of course it was also decades since I watched the originals, so maybe I changed too. To that end I don't expect new KotH to blow my socks off.

[–] slaneesh_is_right@lemmy.org 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I was excited for Beavis and Butthead, i watched one or two episodes and it wasn't bad per se, but i just kind of didn't care.

[–] Texas_Hangover@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Have you seen beavis and butthead do the universe? Fucking amazing lol.

[–] slaneesh_is_right@lemmy.org 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Wait? That's a movie? Like a sequel?

Yep! I just discovered it a couple days ago myself. You gotta see it.

[–] magnetosphere@fedia.io 9 points 2 days ago

Hmm. The article is definitely PR, but if it turns out that these people are genuinely as excited as they sound, we might end up with something worth watching.

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 7 points 2 days ago

I haven't watched TV in a very long time. I would probably watch this, though. I loved that show.

[–] LainTrain@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Never watched it. Always been curious. What's the appeal?

[–] froggycar360@slrpnk.net 8 points 1 day ago

One of my favorite shows. It’s texas anime.

[–] ZombiFrancis@sh.itjust.works 27 points 2 days ago (2 children)

It was a show that understood conservative American culture well enough to make social commentary on it.

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 27 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

well said. I'd also argue that it gave a good peek into the mind of a good man with outdated values, humbly and somewhat begrudgingly updating his beliefs

Edit: Not always to the point of open support, but always to mutual tolerance and respect.

[–] 13igTyme@lemmy.world 25 points 2 days ago

Watching Hank slowly come around to things was interesting.

But other times it's just silly jokes. Like trying to open a can of WD-40, just to bust out a smaller can to spray the lid.

[–] LainTrain@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Neat, thanks! I don't at all know anything about conservatives, less so American ones, so it'll be a fun watch.

[–] _stranger_@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Tons of Texas in-jokes too. One of the main characters was named Luanne Platter, which is the name of the dinner special at a restaurant called Luby's in Texas (The LuAnn Platter). There's still a few around, but they were a lot more prevalent back then.

Hank Hill's job as a propane salesman is also kind of a joke. Cooking a brisket on propane, for example, is a sin. There's even episodes where the family sneaks around his back to eat charcoal grilled burgers.

[–] Derpenheim@lemmy.zip 7 points 2 days ago

It very much tried to peel back the curtain on what the average not quite middle class southern family was like in an era where you couldn't as easily talk to them from across the nation. Facebook wasn't around yet, AIM and MySpace were the norm, and it's generally accepted that while MANY were racist, it was based on ignorance and not hatred.

It was a very different time, and I wholeheartedly believe it was a pivotal timr in which things could have gone the other way.

[–] jawa22@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (4 children)

They could also show us Beavis and Butthead as adults. I'd be interested to see the take on that.

Edit: typo

[–] modus@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Have you seen the two new seasons? They did that. And it's awesome.

[–] Stern@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago

Beavis and Butthead had flash forwards in their recent series where they were adults and also ones where they were elderly.

[–] Mycatiskai@lemmy.ca 8 points 2 days ago

Beavis gets his hands on too much sugar, transforms into Cornholio then cracks open a box of powdered fentanyl Todd hid in their house, killing both him and Butthead.

[–] DontMakeMoreBabies@piefed.social 0 points 2 days ago* (last edited 12 hours ago) (2 children)

This is going to be awful. I hope I'm wrong, enjoyed the original run, but they've lost characters and times have changed.

Gonna end up like Family Guy - just a walking corpse

Edit: And now John Redcorn's dead.

[–] MuAraeOracle@real.lemmy.fan 23 points 2 days ago

You may be right, but at least it's not a reboot, time has passed and the characters can build on the original series while still allowing changes.
