if OOTL: these scam sites have been a thing for ages and shows some bs code on your screen like its doing something and then requires "human verification", making you enter your personal information. (and surprise, you don't get the gems or whatever you wanted)

Google Play is so full of shit they could pivot to being a sewage plant

"But Google said this was safe!"

i really dislike google shoving their misinformation generator here because it's the default app installer for android, and for older or tech illiterate people it's the only app installer.

It's been shoving their misinformation generator ever since they got into advertising tho.

Its search results have been Ads above SEO spam above clickbait youtube videos over pinterest pics above any actual informative result for a long while.

We have to do monthly "quizzes" at work pertaining to online safety, email phishing, password managers, the like. You watch a video, take a quiz, easy. Recently the videos have been AI generated, which is horrible on its own, but one of the videos we watched suggested that apps from the Play Store are always safe and can be trusted.

And then shit like this exists. Glad that Kathy in HR with 0 technical knowledge could download an app like this, and suddenly our passwords are swiped.

Great... Can't wait for the next big agentic system to leak credentials on a scam website...

One more reason to use Aurora Store instead of Google Play. Or better yet, F-Droid.

cannot stress this enough. fuck Google. there are so many better alternatives.

And this shit is somehow legal

[–] starlinguk@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Somehow nowhere has bothered legislating the Internet. I have no idea why.

because it makes psychopaths a huge amount of money to scam the shit out of your grandma

[–] pewpew@feddit.it 8 points 2 days ago

Oh cool so kids can get scammed right on the Playstore!

I remember these scams where you had to put in you phone number then reply to a text message and then you would automatically subscirbe to a contract for apps that are free anyways and not even the oddicial repo.

Also for obvous reasons it woukd not work.

This is a scam but there are actual mod apks or programs like lucky patcher to just buy as much as you want in game

[–] puppycat@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 days ago

lucky patcher is actually the reason i downloaded this game lol

but even with the free IAP I still couldn't stomach this game for very long.

[–] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Who buys/plays these dumb games?

[–] puppycat@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 2 days ago

50 million people, apparently. it's been one of the most popular things on google play afaik. also: exactly the kind of people who would trust ai to spoon feed them info.
