Because people see the picture and think "What in the world why does that soap have a bit out o fit" and then go ahead and click the link. And after doing various "experiments" over the years, advertisers have found that these sort of practices substantially improve engagement/click-through metrics and ultimately result in higher traffic / sales / ad revenue / etc.

I think Tumblr is still fun! It's not as lively anymore and the staff suck, but no algorithm means you really only see stuff you choose to see and the tag blocking makes it so easy to curate your experience.

i've replaced my mattress with a solid block of magnesium. It's cool in the summer.

They did lift the full nudity ban, but they still ban you arbitrarily for a nip slip, or being trans and targeted by TERFs, insulting the WordPress guy, etc.

I tried Tumblr out briefly not long ago, finally. And I guess I've missed the good days? The place feels a little too much like a shopping mall as opposed to what I was expecting. These tumblr memes always gave me 'old internet' vibes but what I saw was a lot closer to modern Facebook style.
It's still a social media site. What you get out of it is very dependent on tags and people followed to my understanding. Not so different from reddit and lemmy experience being dependent on the communities and active posters/commenters.
