more municipalities had ranked choice voting back during the high water mark of sewer socialism in US municipal governance. there's a citations needed episode about it. the number of openly socialist city councils and whatnot sent capital into a panic and model legal language was developed to start pushing on cities to ban it alongside a big campaign to equate it with putting people of color into elected office, as there were non-white socialists getting onto city councils.
this, embarassingly, worked like a charm and rolled back ranked choice nearly everywhere.
