One reason might be that USSR and ColdWar were about Communism and not Socialism.

Most Americans, don't know the difference nor do they care.

Pairing Switzerland and affordable housing is even worse.

Switzerland also has mandatory private health insurance, amusingly enough (I assume there are subsidies or something for those who can't afford it but I don't really know any of the details).

Yeah rent ranges from $2000 to $6000 monthly for bog standard 3.5 room apartments (even ones that haven't been renovated in 40 years) and most of them aren't even in a good location.

And the rent keeps going up. I don't know who the absolute shitheads are who actually go for those high offers.

Most Americans, don't know the difference nor do they care.

I would pay so much money to hear them actually define the terms and the difference, with the condition that I get paid back with interest if they just unironically do the Richard Wolff "socialism is when the government does stuff; when the government does a whole lot of stuff, that's communism."

[–] Cimbazarov@hexbear.net 30 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

"Socialism is when no iphone or tesla" are things ive heard people unironically say

[–] Lussy@hexbear.net 21 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Socialism is when no personal property, the government actually owns your penis, and you’re black and trans now

[–] Erika3sis@hexbear.net 15 points 3 weeks ago

♫ Come out ye black and trans, come out, yer dick is not a man's ♫

Socialism is woke and communism is fascism, actually.

The worst part is that if I saw this at age 17 I'd probably be clapping like a seal, too. I have woken up from a bad dream and can no longer make sense of my past behavior.

Liberalism is a hell of a drug

[–] nothx@hexbear.net 11 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Yeah, I cringe at how much of a centrist prick I was in college.

[–] Erika3sis@hexbear.net 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Pfft, hahahahahahah, imagine being a centrist prick in college, I was at least an anarcho-Bidenist by the time I turned 18!({五十步笑百步|wǔ shí bù xiào bǎi bù}

Americans can't tell the difference between Switzerland and Sweden

[–] Erika3sis@hexbear.net 21 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

I love Switzerland: the chocolate and the cheese, the IKEA and the Minecraft, the yodeling and the army knives, the Vikings and the runestones, the click languages and the hippopotami...

Don't forget Road House and Dirty Dancing!

The socialist/affordable Canada where you make Alabama wages to live in areas ~~with~~ more expensive than NYC/bay area cost of living.

[–] Lussy@hexbear.net 24 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I hear Canadian housing prices blow American ones out of the water. Like, apparently, Toronto homes are 3x more expensive than those in NyC

[–] dkr567@hexbear.net 14 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I looked around and yes actually Toronto is more expensive than NYC. https://www.zoocasa.com/blog/us-vs-canada-affordable-housing-market-report/ (from 2024 but I think it still applies)

At least we have universal^*^ healthcare

^*^ Notwithstanding prescription medication, vision, dental, physio, mental health, and more.

[–] RuthBaderGonesburg@hexbear.net 16 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Depressing. Your telling me housing prices could triple and people still won’t revolt?

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 15 points 3 weeks ago

You see, houses are not made for living in, they're made to make money! Very cool system!

I have a friend who went to switzerland and they got fined 150 euros for getting on the wrong train because their train was at 2:05 and this train was the 2:00 train. She also told me that a frozen heat and eat sandwich at the grocery store was 8 euros so y’know I think I’m gonna pass on visiting that country.

[–] radio_free_asgarthr@hexbear.net 34 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Yeah, Switzerland is a real outlier. Even just thinking that having any more social services than the US is "socialism", Switzerland is the nation of bankers and tax dodgers with one of the highest costs of living. Weird inclusion.

[–] segfault11@hexbear.net 24 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I feel like a lot of amerikkkans get sweden and switzerland mixed up, somehow 100% of the time

[–] sleeplessone@lemmy.ml 1 points 3 weeks ago

Used to happen to me. Same thing with Thailand and Taiwan.

[–] Sphere@hexbear.net 31 points 3 weeks ago

fined 150 euros for getting on the wrong train because their train was at 2:05 and this train was the 2:00 train

Lmao this is so quintessentially Swiss, holy shit

[–] Blaiz0r@lemmy.ml 1 points 3 weeks ago

I don't think they're missing out

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 32 points 3 weeks ago

Liberals are as clueless about capitalism as chuds are.

[–] Cruxifux@feddit.nl 31 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

In Canada we’re literally just the states with healthcare, government wise.

[–] nothx@hexbear.net 10 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah, most of the west mimics the US to varying degrees.

[–] Esoteir@hexbear.net 26 points 3 weeks ago

The kernel of truth here is that in the absence of a generational soviet enemy to point at, a huge amount of anticommunist (anti-Soviet) mythology has been rendered into weightless floating signifiers about 1894 Stalin Farm for anyone under a certain age, and most of what's left our modern "socialist" boogeymen, are just basic policies necessary to have a society that our ghoul overlords have now spent decades villifying. There are a lot of busy people who only pay vague attention to political theater, and for them, when they think Socialism they think about basic concrete things to be able to live.

[–] PorkrollPosadist@hexbear.net 21 points 3 weeks ago

"Mom, can we have socialism?"

"We have socialism at home."

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 13 points 3 weeks ago

"We don't believe one sort of bullshit capitalist propaganda, we believe in an entirely different kind of bullshit capitalist propaganda!"
