As more Black families opt out of public schools, they’re confronting the racist materials dominating the home education market and building alternatives

Extremists have taken advantage of limited regulation. Home school materials, particularly from Christian publishers, have been known for teaching creationism versus evolution.

Some home schooling material has described slave masters as “caregivers” for enslaved people and the practice of slavery as “Black immigration”.

Rightwing material remains a baseline throughout home schooling education, with some parents sharing even more hateful material with their children.

In February 2023, the Ohio department of education investigated a group of home schooling parents who reportedly dispersed pro-Nazi material in a local home schooling group.

home schooling has been dominated by Christian fundamentalist white nationalists for decades who didn't want their children in desegregated schools. what did they expect?

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

Homeschooling gained a lot of traction because of the dinosaur valley hoax. The main proponent started the first (?) creationist museum and made educational material for parents to teach their kids the truth

So they want to home school their children with Christian materials… That ought to give them a real leg up in the world…

Christianity is big in many black communities. I'm sure there was a certain element of betrayal when seeing this curriculum.

[–] peregrin5@piefed.social 6 points 1 day ago

they are literally only big on Christianity due to slavery and colonialism wiping out their actual culture. if not a betrayal it's been a long relationship of abuse

[–] andyburke@fedia.io 9 points 1 day ago

That betrayal has been going on for centuries now. Not sure the black community will ever wake up to that.

Christian curriculum is broken in ways much worse than described in this article... 😓

It's caused no small amount of problems within my own home.

...wow. What the fuck.

I'm not sure if this is some plot to either say slavery is good because immigration or immigration is bad because slavery.

What they want to do is eliminate the concept of chattel slavery, imply we helped Africans to immigrate then taught them useful trade skills, and imply that black people should still be grateful to white people for this kindness

They want to say this is a special immigration, it's one we invited them in graciously to build out a workforce of laborers, but then their descendents became lazy criminals and are abusing welfare

It's all just racism and historical whitewashing. It's not a coherent ideology, it's racism dressed up enough to lead children to extreme racism without their natural empathy or logic getting in the way

And the implication of all the prauger u stuff seems to be that we need to bring back slavery in some form, which would be easier if they remove the word slavery from the language

It's all the same plot, along with the "most slaves were happy to be taken from their terrible conditions and given shelter and food for just a little work (☞゚ヮ゚)☞" bullshit.

They want to dismantle the DoE so they can fill schools with this crap, and students are already doing worse due to rampant cheating during COVID and the proliferation of AI models making it even easier to cheat and never learn the material.

I'm scared of what the new curriculum they have is going teach the next generation.

They've poisoned the well and we've been drinking from it for years. I'm excited to see how this unfolds in the near future. Are we strong enough to do something about it or are we going to take it like good little pissants?
