FBI uses facial recognition technology, online photos to identify and arrest ICE Portland protester The criminal complaint lists a pink gas mask and a forearm tattoo as distinct clues that led investigators to use third-party software to help make an arrest.

"Technology has transformed the act of being in public," Crump said. "People who engage in political protests need to understand that it's very difficult to do that anonymously."

Since June, 23 people have been arrested on charges connected to ICE protests in Southeast Portland.

More of this western freedom I’ve been hearing so much aboot.

[–] rottingleaf@lemmy.world 30 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It's pretty simple.

When your society values freedom and thinks it lacks it, and movies like "Blade Runner", "Robocop", "Total Recall" are popular, - then it has freedom.

When your society values freedom (in words) and thinks it definitely has it, and movies like those are considered funny, gross and stupid rebellion against authority, or at least not how it literally just is, while we now know better, - then it gets ass-raped.

A-and if many people were using their brains to evaluate Google and Facebook, we wouldn't have reached this stage because parallels are very easy to draw and such systems were the main threat of plenty of sci-fi.

A lot of the problems we have now seem to be due to people in Western democracies becoming complacent and taking their rights for granted. Fascism has surged so rapidly in part because people complacently treated it as some kind of aberration that could only happen in the first half of the 20th century, and assumed "we're better than that now."

Always wear non-descript long-sleeve black shirts. Loose fitting and easily moved in black pants. Non-descript black face-mask. Non-descript black safety sunglasses. Non-descript black gloves. Make sure tattoos or other identifying marks are covered. Never take off your mask. If you can, the best option is to thrift these options and buy them with cash.

Also, don't post your face on social media.

[–] cabbage@piefed.social 15 points 2 weeks ago

That's the hardest part, I guess.

[–] ArchmageAzor@lemmy.world 21 points 2 weeks ago (6 children)

There's also gait detection, so maybe wear something like platform shoes or tight pants? I'm not entirely sure how to counter that

Hypothetically speaking, one can put a pebble or small object in their shoe to force oneself to change their gate

[–] PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Walk with a limp and be consistent.

Most don’t change the way you walk if your ass is a veteran.

[–] Cenzorrll@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Ok, remove the buttplug, then.

That's easy to say, but it's also easy to forget to limp if you're focused on something else. Maybe you have to run from riot cops.

[–] sem@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Cory Doctorow says put gravel in your shoes. Yrmv

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

Just one shoe

I think I've heard putting a rock in your shoe is effective, though obviously not comfortable.

[–] leftytighty@slrpnk.net 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Has anyone ever been successfully prosecuted based on gait?

[–] Fredthefishlord@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Surely they will prosecute in a legal manner, surely the fascists will follow the law.

[–] leftytighty@slrpnk.net 3 points 2 weeks ago

ok but that's paranoia, who's to say your faked gait won't get someone else hanged then?

gait isn't proof of identity, if they're gonna do that they can just round you up anyway

[–] LustyArgonianMana@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

I heard walking with umbrellas will confuse gait detection but idk if true

[–] sqgl@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Surely a white surgical facemask is more generic.

[–] CosmicTurtle0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I feel like black is better at hiding detail. Women's slips are black vs white for example.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Black is traditional but someone will be in surgical blue

Temporary tattoos can help confound identification.

“Technology has transformed the act of being in public,” in fact it instills fears of reprisal by participating in a manifestation, which leads to less people manifesting against problems, which leads to more freedom of those in power to do as they will...

[–] rottingleaf@lemmy.world 12 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

Perhaps Mandalorians were onto something

[–] WindyRebel@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

This is the way. Sadly.

I heard fbi had unedited Epstein files, why are they not working on putting Trump in prison?

Because the call is coming from inside the house

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 17 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

it's good to know that the US must be in fantastic shape that the FBI even has the resources to spend on this.

[–] RedditRefugee69@lemmynsfw.com 4 points 1 week ago

We are still a very rich country. We just choose to use that money on bombing brown people and arresting dissidents rather than ensuring we have good healthcare and educated citizens.

[–] AngryRobot@lemmy.world 16 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

All this is going to do is drive the resistance underground and into guerrilla warfare tactics. When we can't peaceably voice our displeasure, our outrage, we'll take to less peaceful eays.

Purchase firearms and learn to use them.

If the gestapo show up at your door you have the option to say no
