I've missed this place a ton. Hope the Lemmy grows as large as it deserves to.
And btw nothing has revealed to me how full of shit Will Menaker is w/r/t the sub more than having to use Left Twitter as my replacement during The Dark Period. Whatever gripes you might have had with the sub, good-faith or otherwise, idk how anyone can spend more than a few hours on both sites without seeing how much more insidious & solipsistic Twitter is. Much rAHther piss my time away here w/ u liberals thank u very much <3
Twitter in general is a hellscape. It's basically an anti-discussion, anti-solidarity machine where all communication is forced to take the form of reductive shitposts. I use it still because news does travel fast there, but yikes.
100%. The character limit alone makes it impossible for real discussion to happen, and has helped create a platform that’s mostly people trying to out oh-so-clever-quip each other from a detached, insincere and isolated place.
As far as I’m concerned, it’s mostly just good for A) like you touched on, getting news fast (and in the case of left Twitter, outside the framing of msm) and B) having some good quick yuks reading Weird Twitter accounts. But those two small components aren’t really separable from the 90 percent of it that’s awful.
Best part about the lemmy is that when I registered it had me pick out pictures of trains to prove I was human. Train gang for life.
Feels good to be home, discord is really good but nothing beats the ability to post something that will be visible to more people than the ~40 people who happen to be looking at chat at any given moment.
