When the site was originally founded, it was explicitly recommended by the mods to periodically ditch and cycle accounts in order to prevent anyone on the site from being targeted, tracked, and harassed.
I never really took that advice, because I am lazy and overconfident. But unless there was a stark reversal that I missed, I assume its cool and even encouraged.

This account of mine is an alt-turned-main since my first primary account was on lemmy.ml but I spent all my time here anyway. But I like this username better so I stuck with this account instead.
I think just yesterday made a backup alt on Lemmygrad with the same name as this account, just in case. I even told them it was just a backup of the same name. No issue.

I have like seven bazillion, it's fine,
I just do it because I come up with different username bits I think are funnier than my current one. My opsecs shit so like everyone who spends too much time on this site can probably track between my different accounts but it's enough for me that weird federated stalkers can't work out which else are mine

you should ideally be getting banned for sectarianism and creating a new account to evade said ban daily. I don't make the rules but many top mods and site admins have privately expressed to me that they prefer it this way....

The only other scenario where it's sketchy is when there's a site-wide vote, like when we voted over defederating this or that instance, it'd be shitty to use all your alts to vote.
Even then, it's pretty much fine as long as you don't explicitly say "I'm using this account for ban evasion" even if it's blatantly obviously for ban evasion
