People should be free to study what they want, and they usually don't get to. That's because school is about learning obedience to authority figures for your future supervisor. Not learning.

Don't blame teachers for this institutional failure.

Hate to spoil it for you but a lot of teachers do that kind of stuff on purpose. If it’s cringy and students hate it or it ends up being funny, that reaction itself will help kids remember it.

It’s also just fun to watch you guys get upset over bad jokes/memes.

[–] red_rising@lemmy.world 19 points 1 year ago

Definitely entertaining as well!

[–] tjsauce@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

You either die based, or live long enough to see yourself become cringé

[–] Donkter@lemmy.world 27 points 1 year ago

Teachers who do this to teenagers who think they have it all figured out live for this.

I do it in my slides at my workplace. I love hearing the groans when I make a bad joke. I'm not sure why.

[–] red_rising@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago

I think it’s on par with Rick rolling someone. Plus, if they are groaning, they are paying attention…barely.

I'm 15 years removed from school now but my god do I still remember the cringy song they used to teach us all of the wavelengths of radiation. All of us from that class do, it's crazy how good it actually works. And if i ever need to figure out which one is stronger I just sing the song and I get the order.

Rage-bait has even infected classrooms? Fuck.

[–] red_rising@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

Nothing says rage bait like dad jokes and old memes……

[–] Th4tGuyII@kbin.social 62 points 1 year ago

It's definitely cringy, but I often admired the attempts when my uni lecturers tried.

Meme culture evolves rapidly, especially nowadays - and for a job that already has a fucked work-life balance, the fact that they're even trying to keep up is admirable.

I'm an idiot. I googled it and found Southwest flights and got confused. Then I spent a few minutes thinking it was some web comic code like how we do xkcd numbers, and looked for web comics titles that match SW.

Then my smut brain kicked in and I remembered what the code was for.

Evidently Japanese porn has codes, evidently the top panel is from Japanese porn, evidently that guy has an encyclopaedic knowledge of Japanese porn.

Doing God's work over here!

[–] TheBat@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Censored or uncensored?

It's not that deep bro

[–] Jackcooper@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

Sometimes the real cringe is in OPs comment

[–] MrScottyTay@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 year ago

The only thing cringier is the body of text you posted with the image

[–] taiyang@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

I teach at uni and instead of memes, I just make really dark throwaway lines. "Y'all need to turn this in on time. I can't fail half the class... again". That's my least dark line this past week; I blame Craig Ferguson for me randomly adding "again" or "yet" to very dark or very flamboyant things.

Mind, I teach social psych, which covers stuff like aggression. Tagging on a "except that one time we don't talk about" in regards to murder is just, idk, fun.

sharing memes became popular on the Internet 15+ years ago, it is a multigenerational thing now

My 60yo boss hit us gen-x, millennials, and gen z employees with a 2010 meme.

It was so incredibly cringy. And it was that point where we all realized how we looked when we meme up our presentations.

Funnily during my college, one of our lecturer is "cool" by adding some funny memes on certain hard part of lecture. Can say it helps for some people to remember as learning can be fun too and to keep everyone relaxed.

But yes if you're trying to meme so hard with 10 years old of meme, and then the audience does not understand them, it does feels awkward for some people, like who does rage comic panel in 2023?

[–] mathematicalMagpie@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

If done well, it doesn't have to be cringe.
