Are we talking '70s prog rock Peter Gabriel Genesis, or '80s pop Phil Collins Genesis? I'm down for both, I just want to plan my outfit.

I hope it's not Bible Genesis, my Sunday-best is worse for wear.

I wonder if Garfield is happy for Nyan Cat's success or if he derides the new generation of viral internet felines that have dethroned him from atop the pillars of celebrity cats. Likewise, do you think Nyan Cat sees Garfield as a trailblazer for cartoon cats in popular media, or as a has-been, a relic from times past?

I mean, he's not wrong that many of Halifax's residents don't care for bike lanes; it's an inevitability of how Halifax is made up.

The Halifax Regional municipality is huge, clocking in at 5475.57 km^2. That's almost 10% of the entire province of Nova Scotia by area. Here's a street view picture of a random spot I picked in Halifax, this is what most of Halifax looks like:

(Of course, most of the population lives in the urban core. Density drops from around 1500 inhabitants per km^2 to just 64 when looking at the whole municipality)

This is just one of the many reasons urban amalgamations are a scam, one often proposed by conservatives to (among other reasons, like subsidizing suburbia) drown out progressive voices in cities that support things like bike lanes. Toronto is a great case study in this, where the surrounding suburbs have been choking the city proper and slowing progress since 1998.

It's frankly ridiculous to entertain the notion that someone living in Tangier (location of the above street view) should have a say in how streets and neighbourhoods are organised in downtown Halifax. Let them decide what happens on the road in Tangier, and let the people who actually live in the neighbourhoods of downtown organise them to their wants and needs.

In conclusion, Tim Houston is an absolute fuckwit. And his coffee and doughnuts suck.

No worries, one can never overemphasize the grossness, unhealthiness, or stupidity of smoking cigarettes.

I have no plans to quit in the immediate future but that doesn't mean I won't tell anyone who'll listen how much tobacco sucks.

I will say though, avoiding smoking indoors or inside cars goes a long way to avoid reeking too much. I've had non-smoker friends confirm this to me. I do however usually still reek from carrying butts around 'cause my momma didn't raise no litterer!

  • my electronics are all designed to break by themselves way before smoke damage would have any effect

  • wait that's not the point? then why do they advertise so on the packs? checkmate, healthy-lungs

  • I only smoke outside

  • I only smoke outside (and don't have pets)

  • I only smoke outside

  • I am extremely careful about making sure I don't leave any lit embers around (I almost lost my apt in a fire years ago due to a negligent smoker)

  • yeah I admit I am trash

  • again, they advertise it on the packs! is it not the addiction that makes you cool?

This post is satire, don't smoke kids. If you won't do it for your lungs, do it to not constantly smell like an ashtray.

Always love seeing enbies rocking cool facial hair! Those glasses also look good on you, really brings out your eyes 😊

The Venn diagram of enbies and people who sew in my friend group is practically a circle, in fact I think I'm the only non-binary person I know who doesn't sew 😭

Your parents sound like shitty psychiatrists.

I think this is something I might be too French-Canadian to understand, here we'd call it "pot" or perhaps "herbe", both of which don't translate to "bad grass".

Unless overseas "herbe" translates to weed. We use it pretty interchangeably with "gazon" (which just means grass)

Yeah because making clearly false claims and refusing to back them up is totally in good faith and the peak of civility. I don't tend to be civil with people who'd gladly take away my rights.

I know what you're selling too, and don't consider not having to talk to you to be a loss :)

I recall a lot of Americans having this same type of rhetoric when people would call MAGA fascists during Trump's first term. Look where they are now, they're literally already opening concentration camps.

If you think the recent Conservative campaign didn't use a bunch of fascist rhetoric and dogwhistles, you either weren't paying attention or don't recognize the early stages of fascist movements.

I'd love some examples if you care to share!

There is a difference between "calling everyone a nazi, racist, and transphobe" and calling out Nazis, racists, and transphobes, and a lot of people fail to grasp that nuance. From what I've seen so far in your comments, you're giving off the vibe of someone who either doesn't understand that nuance, or willfully avoids it.

Again, would love some examples if this isn't the case.

I've learnt that never reading Twitter replies is actually a form of self-care. No matter how vile the tweet, the replies are always somehow an extra level of unhinged.

I spent so, so much time in trans subreddits, especially /r/egg_irl.

It took over two years of basically exclusively looking at trans memes, "to get a better understanding of the trans experience as an ally", for me to start considering I might be trans!

I also recall a time near the beginning of that trans meme phase where I said to a friend "I think I'm probably non-binary". He was like "what?" to which I answered "what?" and I just left it at that, not even a hint of introspection.

BA Johnston is an artist from Hamilton, Ontario known for his satirical songs and energetic live performances. Some songs will be simple acoustic arrangements, as in Canadian Beers or they'll feature synth and drum machines, like I Don't Buy No Government Weed (Still Buying From Steve). Across all tracks, there's BA Johnston's self-deprecating humour and many references to real Canadian culture (like the mention of the camo Alpines in Canadian Beers, this man gets me)

Seriously, if you ever get the chance to see one of his live shows, please do yourself a favour and go! I don't want to share any details because it's best you go in blind. I will say that a BA Johnston show is an unhinged, multi-sensory experience.

Playful as a puppy but smart as a whip, New Brunswick's Motherhood pack deeply conceptual art rock into a delightfully unpretentious package.

Summer is approaching (in the Northern hemisphere, anyways) and while I do still bike in the winter, I'm hyped for the nicer weather to go on more leisure rides rather than just commuting.

However, I'm lacking ideas and inspirations for spots to cycle to, so I was curious where everyone here likes to go on bike rides!

According to the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), 27.9 per cent of New Brunswickers indicated having difficulties with their mental health in 2024. Additionally, Statistics Canada reports that New Brunswick has the third highest suicide rate among all Canadian provinces, with 15.1 deaths per population of 100,000. It is crucial that New Brunswickers have access to timely and effective mental health services.

Unfortunately, in New Brunswick there are limited and inadequate supports for individuals seeking mental health care.

Last week, Premier Susan Holt launched her weekly livestreamed press conferences on her government's tariff "action plan."

New Brunswickers got to know the media room Holt was using — and the image of leadership in crisis — during Blaine Higgs's frequent pandemic briefings, fed into laptop computers and smartphones.

The premier instead adopted the role of therapist-in-chief, pledging to use the weekly briefing to respond to questions sent to her office by anxious, frustrated New Brunswickers.

Moncton Mayor Dawn Arnold is stepping down from her municipal role effectively immediately to take on the new responsibility in the Senate. Paulette Thériault will be acting mayor, effective immediately, a statement from the city said.

Elections N.B. said Moncton will have to wait until May 11, 2026, to fill Arnold's vacancy.
