I saw someone explain this - in a boxing tournament if you break your nose right at the beginning of a multi fight series, you're going to not only have a bad time, you might get like permenant damage and you'll also lose because you'll be focused on protecting your nose.

something that's not touched upon is that apparently there was a significant weight difference between the two, despite being in the same weightclass. Getting punched by someone 30% heavier than you is gonna hurt, no matter how good you are at guarding.
