"And that official canon, because it's so grimdark and edgy, will make the edgelords even more excited and they will demand even gorier remakes!" so-true

I swear in the US that we never culturally left the 90’s.

Hell, the modern CHUD seems to pride themselves in essentially being the embodiment of dumb 90’s ‘tude.

my-hero entire brand identity is Xtreme 90s with "dae le sex dae le 69 fart sound here" arrested development.

First rule of capeshit is that heroes (and villains) never die, and even if they do, someone will take their capes*, so there's infinite material for sequels.

*This of course sounds worse once you get older than 13 and understand it's because character development is expensive and not always successful, though 90% of DC universe and 80% of Marvel seems to make the latter point entirely moot.

Even Harley Quinn can't be allowed to permanently move on from the Jonkler and actually be happy with Poison Ivy; that has to get reset too. debord-tired

Well iirc she did talked few times she would like to be treated like a princess?

[–] UlyssesT@hexbear.net 3 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

We can treat some comrades like princesses. As a treat. pavlichenko

[–] PolandIsAStateOfMind@lemmygrad.ml 5 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

That wouldn't be princess treatment though, that would be comrade treatment.

I don't think Marvel, Star Wars and Harry Potter fans are really "edgy grimdark" fandoms, if anything they're the opposite.

I think you're lumping in Rick and Morty fans in with everyone else, in my experience they tend not to care for Marvel or Potter much, and only care for the OG Star Treks.

I disagree for the most part and I present as exhibits the highly popular "Marvel Zombies" fad as well as, coincidentially, the similar "Death Troopers" thing in Star Wars. The Old Republic MMORPG used to reek of "rakghoul" events and such space zombies barfing over everyone as part of rather hyped events in that game that made it insufferable for a while.

Also, Harry Potter had edgy fanfic spinoffs, including "Methods of Rationality" (that also had zombies, including awooga with Herminone's zombie!)

You know WAY more about these fandoms than I do, more than most FANS I know do. Your anti-fandom seems to have more fervor than most of the fandom has.

[–] UlyssesT@hexbear.net 6 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

In this particular case, it's because I am a jaded ex fan of much of the above.

You wanted evidence of those fandoms being receptive to edginess, so I gave it to you.

I read HPMoR back in the day, I don’t remember any grimdark shit, but he was still writing it when I stopped reading so I’m not surprised to hear it went that direction.

It was so weird to hear the author of HPMoR come up in a recent TrueAnon episode, but not at all surprising to learn that he’s an ai grifter these days.

I don’t remember any grimdark shit

There's a pretty long and exhaustive comprehensive list of the grimdark shit in it, especially as it proceeds to its Randian "the entire cosmos is just a bunch of exploitable resource nodes for the taking" fever dream ending, but what I already mentioned was (CW: necrophilia, CSAM)

spoilerthe part where Herminone is killed but magically reanimated in a way where Big Yud dares the reader to enter his magical fetish realm by narratively stating how Hermione's magic zombie lacks volition but can still responds positively to sex and his fucked up "rationalist" version of Harry Potter is cool with that and very horny for the zombie.
