A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.
Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:
- Both “200” and “160” are 2 minutes in microwave math
- When you’re a kid, you don’t realize you’re also watching your mom and dad grow up.
- More dreams have been destroyed by alarm clocks than anything else
Rules
- All posts must be showerthoughts
- The entire showerthought must be in the title
- No politics
- If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
- A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
- Posts must be original/unique
- Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS
If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.
Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

I think some people just don't realize it's rude to have a speaker phone call in a public setting. I once had a complete stranger at a restaurant ask my friends and me to be quiet because the person on the other end of the phone kept hearing us.
This is the main character syndrom. People consider themselves the main character in this world and the others just npcs (non player characters, bystanders). Best way to tech them is a bucket of cold water (literally or figuratively).
Had someone in a restaurant ask the manager if they could turn down the music playing, they were in a business zoom meeting.
Same with people who blast music in public. There's a bike/pedestrian trail near me I use a lot and people are constantly riding or running while blasting the worst music imaginable to everyone nearby. Maybe someday I'll build up the courage to tell them to shut the fuck up... or at least teach them what headphones are. Maybe I could buy a bunch of cheap ones and just chuck them at the heads of anyone who apparently needs them.
Headphones on a bike are illegal in my province. So I once bought a bluetooth speaker for my bike. I don't really like imposing my music to anyone and tried to keep it at a minimum level but stills didn't like it. So now I use bone conduction headphones. Unfortunately they are also in a grey area where they could also be illegal.
In short, if you want to listen to music on a bike here, your only legal option is a speaker. Anything else is unsafe and could traumatize a poor car driver that hits a cyclist that didn't hear them coming (according to the police here).
Otherwise get a car and blast the music with the windows open like a normal safe person. or close the windows and don't hear anything around, but this is much safer than having headphones while cycling, obviously.
Same with walking or jogging with headphones. Are you out of your mind? Some poor car driver could hit reckless runners jumping in front of their car because they couldn't hear it coming.
No, society wants everyone not in a car to keep quiet and don't ruin their silence, with all the soothing car noises, so it's safer this way. No headphones on a bike, it's not safe! You need to hear that car blasting music that's coming at you.
Bone conducting FTW
Bah, sound quality is just okay. It's fine for podcasts and electronic without bass, but it's kind of annoying for some types of music.
It works but.. meh.
I should clarify they're the best option when you need to be aware of your surroundings. Sounds quality isn't going to win any awards on it's own, but it's good enough for their application.
There’s some shithead in my area that lugs around one of those large JBL party-size looking Bluetooth speakers and has a habit of sitting at the bus stop across the street from my apartment and blasting his shitty rap music for the whole fucking neighborhood to suffer. Always super awesome to finish a long night shift, crawl into bed, and be woken up to that shit a few hours later.
Get the cheap corded earbuds and wrap em around a rock for aerodynamics.
My favourite is people blasting shitty music from the speakers on their Harley's, fucking double trouble
Hey Adam, are you sure you weren't just eating ass at the time? ..... I'm just joking about your username.
I would have said hi to the person in the speakerphone and told them about my meal and introduced them to my friends and told them that everyone could hear their conversation in the restaurant.
I'm one of those people ... I always thought, if it's reasonable to have a conversation with someone physically there, at a reasonable talking volume, why does it matter if I'm doing the same on my phone?
Obviously if it's obnoxiously loud that's a different story
Why would you want to use speakerphone anyway? Especially in a public place where they'd be harder to hear?
The sounds coming out of your phone are distorted by the speaker and the connection, and distortion can be painful to listen to
