hey this facial hair stuff kind of fucking sucks. how long do i have to be on hrt before laser/electrolysis keeps it off? or is that not relevant?

HRT is not relevant in this case. You can start laser/electrolysis whenever. I started it months before I could get an HRT prescription. As always, if you have darker hair on fairer skin, I recommend laser first if possible, and then electrolysis to get any stray hairs. Reasons being:

  1. Laser is usually much cheaper than electrolysis
  2. Electrolysis takes so much time/more frequent sessions
  3. Both are painful, but at least a laser session on your face is done in 10-15 minutes while an electrolysis session can take over an hour.

Godspeed, girl!

ah shit, and i've been waiting for nothing? fuck. oh well, time to look up local clinics then

So laser will actually remove hair, not just make it lighter/thinner? Might have to get an ipl then. For some reason I thought that would make electro harder.

I would advise against using an ipl unit on one’s face, but otherwise go for it! I had good results using mine before going all out on laser. A few laser sessions will also make your hair thinner, but not lighter. Remaining vellus hairs after laser treatment are white, and not particularly visible.

Why would you not use it on your face? Will it scar/do permanent damage, or would it just hurt worse? Obviously if it'll do permanent harm I won't but :kitty-cri: god damn I hate my facial hair.

But that's good to know, I'll definitely look into getting one then. Even if I can't use it on my face there's a lot more of me.

[–] MusicOwl@hexbear.net 7 points 7 months ago

You have a high likelihood of burning yourself with it due to the thickness of the hair on the face and the relative thinness of the skin.

IPL is useless for facial hair because the roots are in too deep there. IPL can work well on your legs, belly etc., but face and back hair need an actual laser for permanent results

[–] BountifulEggnog@hexbear.net 4 points 7 months ago

:/ that's unfortunate. Probably going to need to go somewhere then. Thankfully I don't really have any back hair so that's something at least.

For body hair, some people recommend waiting because HRT itself will thin it out. So, it saves time, money, and pain.

But I don't think HRT does anything for facial hair IIRC. And given laser takes time to work (hair grows in cycles, so it takes a while to get hairs in different phases all taken care of). So its something to get as soon as you want and can afford it (or get insurance to pay for it if you are in one of the areas where that's a thing).

[–] EstraDoll@hexbear.net 4 points 7 months ago (1 children)

but i want it gone now though...

how long do i have to wait to see how much it thins out?

[–] WalrusDragonOnABike 4 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Oh, apparently I was wrong about the face (it also thins, but I think its still unlikely to give satisfactory results compared to body hair). Seems like 6-12 months might be when to expect noticeable changes? Whereas laser would give results a lot quicker. Personally, I don't think I'd wait that long. I don't have time during the summer because work, so I'm still waiting until after that.

body/facial hair is p cringe, i'm going to look into getting it zapped off soon probably

[–] AutomatedPossum@hexbear.net 4 points 7 months ago

there's places that offer package deals for face and full body laser i think

[–] SnowySkyes@hexbear.net 3 points 7 months ago

If you're me, a long fucking time. My facial hair is nowhere near as prevalent as it was, but some of it is still there. I've been doing laser hair removal for about 18 months of my 21 months on HRT and they still hasn't taken care of all of it. I hate it. Oh, and laser doesn't fully remove stuff anyways. I have scruff on my neck that is pure white, so it's there, but no one can see it. After all that, I will say that I do only have to shave once every 2-3 days. So it's definitely not nearly as bad as it used to be.
