I think gunner refers more to the team itself whereas gooner refers more to the fans.

Really weird since the mascot is actually called Gunner, Gunnersaurus.

"Gunners" is like the official nickname. Arsenal was founded by munition factory workers. "Gooners" is just an evolution of Gunners that's older than the porn gooning
