Everything to do with the USA's own Imperial Backyard. From hispanics to the originary peoples of the americas to the diasporas, South America to Central America, to the Caribbean to North America (yes, we're also there).

Post memes, art, articles, questions, anything you'd like as long as it's about Latin America. Try to tag your posts with the language used, check the tags used above for reference (and don't forget to put some lime and salt to it).

Here's a handy resource to understand some of the many, many colloquialisms we like to use across the region.

"But what about that latin american kid I've met in college who said that all the left has ever done in latin america has been bad?"

Augusto Cesar Sandino was a nicaraguan revolutionary remembered by being the leader of the resistance to the US occupation of Nicaragua in the first half of the 20th century.

He was born in Niquinohomo, department of Masaya, on May 18, 1895. He was the son of Gregorio Sandino, a wealthy coffee farmer, and Margarita Calderón, an indigenous servant who worked on his father's plantation.

In 1921 Sandino was forced to leave the country after shooting Dagoberto Rivas, the son of a prominent conservative from the town. During his stay in Mexico, Sandino was linked with leaders of various unionist, worker, socialist, anarchist and freemason groups.

In 1925, after 13 years of US occupation in Nicaragua, the invading army withdrew its troops. In October of that year, the military coup of General Emiliano Chamorro against President Carlos José Solórzano occurred. North American troops land again at Bluefields. Sandino, upon learning of the beginning of the Constitutionalist War, decided to return to Nicaragua, where he arrived on June 1.

"In view of the abuses of North America in Nicaragua, I left Tampico, Mexico, on May 18, 1926, to join the Constitutionalist Army of Nicaragua, which was fighting against the regime imposed by the Yankee bankers in our Republic."

On October 26, 1926, together with workers from the San Albino mines, he took up arms, joining the constitutional cause. He organized his combatants and leads an attack against the conservative barracks in the town of El Jícaro on November 2, 1926. After this success in combat, Sandino was recognized by the liberal military leaders for which he is appointed General-in-Chief of the Army of Las Segovias, where he establishes his base of operations.

Sandino's war against the US Army

With just 30 men, Sandino begins a national war against the American invaders and the surrendering government of José María Moncada. On September 2, 1927, the Defense Army of the National Sovereignty of Nicaragua was constituted.

"Dynamics of Nicaragua"

After intense fighting and without being able to defeat him, the US government of Herbert C, Hoover, ordered the withdrawal of the troops deployed in Nicaragua. With the election of Franklin D. Roosvelt, peace negotiations began with the US government. Sandino sent the new liberal president, Juan Bautista Sacasa, a peace proposal, which was accepted. On February 2, 1933, the war officially ends.

Sandino's murder

On February 21, 1934, after attending a dinner in La Loma (Presidential Palace), together with the writer Sofonías Salvatierra (Sacasa's Minister of Agriculture) and his lieutenants, Generals Francisco Estrada and Juan Pablo Umanzor, invited by Juan Bautista Sacasa , he is detained by Major Lisandro Delgadillo, who led them to the El Hormiguero prison.

The three generals Sandino, Estrada and Umanzor were assassinated at eleven o'clock at night by troops from the battalion that guarded them. Two years later, Anastasio Somoza took the reins of Nicaragua, overthrowing President Sacasa, who was his in-law uncle. Somoza claimed that he had received orders from US Ambassador Arthur Bliss Lane to kill Sandino.

Legacy

The struggle for Freedom and sovereignty represented by Augusto Sandino has transcended borders, becoming a symbol of and flag of the peoples who fight against oppression and the domination of external forces. Sandino's ideas and thoughts are remembered in Nicaragua and the world:

"My greatest honor is to emerge from the bosom of the oppressed, who are the soul and nerve of the race."

Was it prescient that Alber Speers most noteworthy contribution to architecture was the idea that some buildings look better as ruins and should be built with the expectation of bexoming ruins, given that the nazis were gonna get owned?

I'm so happy for him! Kojima is a rich dude who I at least can see is having a fucking blast with it. He's doing what I'd do with money and connections aside from buy Hexbear a nuke would be to meet directors that I like and make super high budget vanity projects that everyone has to pretend to like.

I love cooking for work but I hate all the fucking cleaning so much, especially when we're shutting down for breaks and have to get into all the ovens and equipment and detail shit. Ughhhh I would gladly give up a few days' wages to pay someone else to deal with all that shit. My arms and wrists hurt so much from scrubbing and don't get me started on how fucked my knees got getting down on the floor scrubbing the under sides of tables. And i can't complain because everybody else seems to have no problem including this dude who is literally twice my age so i just look like a wuss

P.s. I really fucking hate wiping down the fucking walls. WHO THE FUCK IS GETTING SAUCE AND GREASE ON THE FUCKING WALLS, because it AIN'T ME

The elementary school next to my house has an absolute beast of an outdoor PA. They're playing some tunes while kids play outside and it's coming out crystal clear across a big giant field and playground as well as a couple blocks of city

Such a shame that Sailor Moon Crystal didn't have any silly filler episode focusing on Usagi's friends or her brother and parents. The 1990's anime had a bunch of these.

So, I've got a Chinese DVD box set of the Star Wars prequels, found it in a giveaway box and was too weird not to have. Haven't watched em cause I don't speak Chinese. However I'm curious as to how other languages handled all the super racist characters in their dub. Like, how does Nute Gunray speak in Chinese?

The two weeks of perfect weather now seemingly extending into the third feel like they have healed like 1.5 years of trauma, but surely this can't last, the rest of the summer must suck ass to balance this out

I'm looking for players for a D&D 5e game, info below.

copied from my post on c/ttrpg

CWsFantasy action, unseen horror, evil fanatics, and malevolent elder entities. In this adventure the townsfolk of Phandalin - and the adventurers helping them - are also subjected to eldritch forces which are slowly corrupting them and turning them into aberrations.

Nestled on the northern Sword Coast, between Neverwinter Wood and the Sword Mountains, is the town of Phandalin. Centuries ago, Phandalin was a thriving settlement with deep ties to its neighboring communities. But then bandits overran the town, and Phandalin lay abandoned for centuries.

Only in the past few years have settlers built a new village on the ruins of the old. These townsfolk hope to grow Phandalin through hard work, camaraderie, and the shared purpose of building a lasting home. Threatening their efforts and their survival are bandits, brigands, and monsters.

Some of you may be aware of the iconic 5e D&D adventure, Lost Mine of Phandelver. This is its sequel. Characters start at level 5 and may advance up to level 12 by the end of the module. You don't need to have played D&D or LMoP in order to join this group, as we'll get everyone up to speed during "session zero".

I'm looking to run this adventure for 3-6 players. Plan to organize via Discord and play via Foundry VTT (all you need is a web browser). If you're interested post your available times and we'll see how we can squeeze everyone in - my preference is a weekday afternoon but I'm flexible and can do any day after 3pm (California time). I expect each session to last 3-4 hours, one meeting a week, and the full adventure to last about 3 months.

As for me, I'm an experienced DM and a TTRPG player for about fifteen years. I've played in and run games recruited on this site and loved doing it. I keep the games I run PG-13, so don't expect anything gratuitous that you might see on prestige TV. I'm open to allowing homebrew, with the caveat that I can issue a balance hotfix if necessary.

Reply here or in the thread or DM me if you're interested.

Bit of a discussion question, but how old do you think a person should be before getting a vasectomy? Not like, legally or anything (this is also wholly separated from like, trans healthcare), but like, how long do you think they should wait?
