The court is the highest UN body for hearing disputes between states. Its rulings are final and binding but have been ignored in the past, reports Reuters. The court has no enforcement powers.

And that's by design by the Big 5.

Just like their veto power at the Security Council making sure that they don't even get to condemn atrocities officially.

It's less of a court in the traditional sense, and more of an indicator and shaper of international sentiment.

Yeah, it's definitely not going to be enforced but it's still breaking the Genocide Convention. It basically says that in the future Israel might not comply with international treaties if it doesn't feel like it. This makes them hard to work with as a country.

Then there is also bilateral actions such as sanctions as a tool to put pressure.

[–] sik0fewl@lemmy.ca 45 points 6 months ago

The pro-genociders aren't gonna like this.

[–] nkat2112@sh.itjust.works 31 points 6 months ago

This is great news! Now let's act to stop genocide. I'm hoping...

I'm sure this will stop them. Israel has nothing but ~~contempt~~ respect for international law.

Or else any last semblance of the rules-based international order is out the window.

It already was after Iraq, but now they dragged it upstairs to throw it out of the window again, just to make sure it’s really dead.

Aren't we well past this point already?

[–] theacharnian@lemmy.ca 1 points 6 months ago

There are still "semblances".

Eh. The ICJ has zero enforcement authority, and is often very selectively ignored by tons of countries.

The result of this will be:

Israel: no.

ICJ:

Note that this is not a defense of Israel or an endorsement of the ongoing genocide they’re perpetrating. It’s merely a statement on how the ICJ is effectively toothless.

Or else we will be very very angry with you, and we will write you a letter telling you how angry we are.

Mr Biden tear down this alliance!

[–] TheUncannyObserver@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 6 months ago (7 children)

Israel will ignore it, and their paid-for members of the US Congress will ensure that anyone who tries to hold Israel accountable is threatened into submission by the US military, a subsidiary of the IDF. Israel rules America, and America is the strongest nation on earth, whom nobody will seriously cross. Ergo, Israel rules the world.

Israeli rule will soon come to an end. They have become so brazen with their actions they have lost the support of the international community.
