And I'd be more likely to vote for the one who actually went to prison somehow.

[–] IrateAnteater@sh.itjust.works 70 points 5 months ago (3 children)

Probably because her crime was one that we could all kind of see ourselves doing.

Plus, as far as I remember, she didn't bitch about it or try to blame everyone else.

[–] Please_Do_Not@lemm.ee 52 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Also probably since she isn't a rapist making aggressively bigoted remarks every single day. Or a bunch of other things...

[–] prowess2956@kbin.social 15 points 5 months ago (2 children)

And boy, can she make an apple strudel

[–] Everythingispenguins@lemmy.world 7 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I am only voting for her if there is pie

It's a good thing.

[–] Delusional@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago

Yeah overall in general Martha isn't a massive piece of shit failure of a human being but that other fuckstick is.

[–] Neato@ttrpg.network 46 points 5 months ago (3 children)

FYI: don't lie to the IRS about cheating on your taxes. Rich people have tons of ways to avoid contributing to society. But if you lie to the IRS about it and they find out, you're fucked.

Probably because her crime was one that we could all kind of see ourselves doing.

She was convicted on insider trading because she got insider information from the CEO ahead of an FDA ruling. This is some rich people bullshit so I'd contend most of us will never be in that position. She was also on the board of directors for the New York Stock Exchange so...

[–] Barbarian@sh.itjust.works 23 points 5 months ago (1 children)

For Americans, it seems like the easiest way to do insider trading is to first get elected to Congress. Then you can do as much insider trading as you want!

[–] rimmedalpha@lemmynsfw.com 3 points 5 months ago

It's just called legislating.

[–] scorpious@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago (1 children)

most of us will never be in that position

But if you were..

[–] Neato@ttrpg.network 5 points 5 months ago

I'd pay my fucking taxes and not screw over typical investors with insider trading. We're not all scumbags.

[–] KevonLooney@lemm.ee 1 points 5 months ago

You are totally right. I knew she was a top stockbroker when there were like 0 women in that role. But I didn't know she was on the board:

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/martha-stewart-quits-nyse-board/

She was way too financially sophisticated to have done such a basic stupid thing. Also, I believe she didn't just plead out. I feel like anyone who did plead guilty would just get probation and be banned from trading securities for a few years.

That's a death sentence for someone who works in finance but not for her. She sold magazines!

And it's a crime most politicians are already committing.

[–] elliot_crane@lemmy.world 9 points 5 months ago

I feel like Martha Stewart could probably get elected president if she put her mind to it. Imagine the headlines, “President Stewart bakes delicious cookies for peace summit, all attending countries agree to sign legislation banning proliferation of WMDs”.

[–] sxan@midwest.social 50 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

Martha Stewart was railroaded. Members of Congress - and some of the worst are members of my own party - regularly do worse.

Oh, but, yeah, sincerely: the meme is clever and funny.

[–] mPony@lemmy.world 41 points 5 months ago (3 children)

yeah but Martha is actually likeable.

[–] TragicNotCute@lemmy.world 8 points 5 months ago

It’s a good thing.

I can make my own cakes. They're quite good.

[–] dditty@lemm.ee 17 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Didn't Arnold also host The Apprentice?

[–] bingbong@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 5 months ago

Foreshadowing

[–] enleeten@discuss.online 11 points 5 months ago

It wasn't a TV show, it was crime school.

[–] OttoVonNoob@lemmy.ca 11 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Martha should of run for congress or senate then her insider trading would be allowed and she would not of had any trouble.

[–] Akasazh@feddit.nl 1 points 5 months ago

would not of had

I understand where this misspelling comes from, but I find it difficult to parse.

[–] Seraph@kbin.social 11 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (2 children)

One of these felons is electable, as she has only done* what a bunch of congress has. She'll fit right in!

Edit: Ducking Autocorrect. Sorry for the confusion.

[–] Zolidus@lemmy.world 14 points 5 months ago

That was a tough read.

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 7 points 5 months ago (1 children)

You meant to type "done" but autocorrect chose "sure," right?

[–] Seraph@kbin.social 6 points 5 months ago

You're correct, so sorry! One word change and that became I-Had-A-Stroke material.

[–] demizerone@lemmy.world 10 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I'd take Martha baking over Trumps any day!

[–] ares35@kbin.social 4 points 5 months ago

and i wouldn't want to see diaper don on the cover of sports illustrated swimsuit edition.

[–] ares35@kbin.social 9 points 5 months ago (1 children)

and that's pretty much where the similarities end.

[–] Num10ck@lemmy.world 13 points 5 months ago

they both like to stir things up while surrounded by pots and pans.
