Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

MODERATORS

Well, Iran and their allies' response may happen sometime this week and apparently they aren't talking to the US in order to negotiate how and where they will hit Israel (and Shoigu arrived in Tehran rather auspiciously), the Bangladeshi government just fell, F16s have been given to Ukraine, there are fascist riots in the UK, and Japan just had its worst stock fall since 1987 and seems to be taking several other countries/corporations with it. I don't really know where to look right now.

The COTW (Country of the Week) label is designed to spur discussion and debate about a specific country every week in order to help the community gain greater understanding of the domestic situation of often-understudied nations. If you've wanted to talk about the country or share your experiences, but have never found a relevant place to do so, now is your chance! However, don't worry - this is still a general news megathread where you can post about ongoing events from any country.

The Country of the Week is Iraq! Feel free to chime in with books, essays, longform articles, even stories and anecdotes or rants. More detail here.

Please check out the HexAtlas!

Israel-Palestine Conflict

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Sources on the fighting in Palestine against Israel. In general, CW for footage of battles, explosions, dead people, and so on:

UNRWA daily-ish reports on Israel's destruction and siege of Gaza and the West Bank.

English-language Palestinian Marxist-Leninist twitter account. Alt here.
English-language twitter account that collates news (and has automated posting when the person running it goes to sleep).
Arab-language twitter account with videos and images of fighting.
English-language (with some Arab retweets) Twitter account based in Lebanon. - Telegram is @IbnRiad.
English-language Palestinian Twitter account which reports on news from the Resistance Axis. - Telegram is @EyesOnSouth.
English-language Twitter account in the same group as the previous two. - Telegram here.

English-language PalestineResist telegram channel.
More telegram channels here for those interested.

Various sources that are covering the Ukraine conflict are also covering the one in Palestine, like Rybar.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists
Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful. Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Pro-Russian Telegram Channels:

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language.
https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.
https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.
https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.
https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.
https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.
https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.
https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine Telegram Channels:

Almost every Western media outlet.
https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.
https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

Russia are still not calling this a "war" in ukraine. They are continuing to call it a Special Military Operation.

The counter offensive they're now mounting in their own territory? "Counter Terrorist Operation"

I find it interesting that your standard liberal scoffs at Iran’s military capacity, yet whenever Israel does some shit, a dozen articles are written about how US military generals become on edge and announce “negotiations” or “deescalation” that help stop/delay major Iranian strikes against Israel/US bases.

Copy and pasting from CNN since linking to breaking news doesn’t let me link to the story itself

Stocks are tumbling. But, no, America's market is not "crashing”

The US stock market looks like it’s going to have another very rough day on Monday. But this is not what a market crash looks like.

US futures, which give investors a sense of how the market will open at 9:30 am ET, are sharply lower. Dow futures are down 800 points, or 2%. Futures for the broader S&P 500 are 2.9% lower. And futures for the tech-heavy Nasdaq, which entered correction territory (a 10% decline from the peak) fell 4.2%.

That’s bad, but it’s not close to historically bad. By comparison, Japan’s Nikkei 225 plummeted 12% Monday — that’s a crash.

The Dow’s worst drop, measured by points, in history, came in the early days of the pandemic: It fell 2,997 points on March 16, 2020, a decline of 12.9%. The broader S&P 500 fell 12% that day — the second-worst decline in history.

But that wasn’t even close to “Black Monday,” the worst US stock market crash ever. The Dow on October 19, 1987, fell 22.6% in a single session. That day, the S&P 500 nosedived 20.3%.

The US trading day hasn’t even begun, and strange things can happen when fear takes hold on Wall Street. But — at least so far — this is not what a market crash looks like.

My “the markets aren’t in melt down” shirt has people asking a lot of questions that are answered by my shirt.

Whatever you think is happening right now, the bank manager wants you to know that your money is safe and you should definitely exit the queue of people seeking to withdraw their money.

It’s SO fucking Joever.

Learning from Bangladesh, Thailand has shut down the Move Forward party, widely regarded as a US proxy, with 151 seats in the 500-seat parliament. Last year, it was blocked from forming a coalition government by the monarchy and military.

Thailand also recently applied to BRICS, and has a 900-kilometer high speed railroad in the works by China, which would connect Kunming in China to Bangkok via Laos. It should be complete by 2028 and will cost up to $10 billion, but a railway ticket will cost a third of the equivalent plane ticket and bring two million Chinese tourists every year.

Nonetheless, a color revolution could still come in through the back door, with Myanmar's government continuing to lose ground to Western-backed rebels. China has been pressuring them to come to some kind of agreement and end the conflict, but they have so far refused to give in.

Simple electoral take. We may have underestimated the amount and extent of people who just wanted a different candidate besides Trump and Biden. KBrat is a different candidate.

Climate change could return a stolen lake to Indigenous people, a century later

Post

  • Semá:th Xhotsa, or Sumas Lake, in Canada was the center of First Nations’ food system and culture, before European colonists drained it in 1924 to create farmland.
  • Almost 100 years later, catastrophic flooding threatens to refill the lake and displace the farmers.
  • First Nations people and university researchers have proposed restoring the lake ecosystem to adapt to climate change-driven flooding, and as a method of reparation, but the local government is pushing back.

A tribe once declared ‘extinct’ helps reintroduce salmon to the Columbia River

post

  • For thousands of years, Kettle Falls was a vital salmon fishing ground for the Sinixt, but early 20th-century dam construction blocked salmon migration.
  • Wrongfully declared extinct in Canada in 1956, the Sinixt fought for recognition and were officially acknowledged as Aboriginal Peoples of Canada in 2021.
  • In 2023, the U.S. government signed a $200 million agreement with a coalition of tribes, including the Sinixt, to fund an Indigenous-led salmon reintroduction program into the Columbia River system above dams in Washington.
  • Sinixt leaders say this project is an important effort to help right a historical wrong in the legacy that led to their “extinction” status, while many hope to one day join salmon efforts on their traditional territory in Canada.

CW: dead bodies, gore

a7med.meqdad posted a picture of body parts in plastic bags on Instagram. Says they are remnants of martyrs from the displaced school after an Israeli attack. Because they are so disfigured it is impossible to tell who it is so they weigh the bags and every 70kg gets buried as a separate person.

With the numbers of infantry, tanks, armored vehicles and drones sent into Kursk this appears it might be an all-in offensive from Ukraine. Everywhere in Donbas has stopped getting reinforcements and is collapsing at an increasing rate. This is Ukraine’s “2024 summer offensive” and this time they were smart enough to not brag about it loudly in the media for months.

More and more reinforcements are being sent into the Kursk breach and once it’s eventually stemmed and cleaned up Ukraine is going to be in an extremely weak position.

However this will be very damaging for Putin’s reputation and was a major intelligence failure. I even heard reports the Russians saw Ukrainian build-ups and hesitated to strike for some reason, major fuck up

lmao I’ve been seeing a defense of Kamala that amounts to “Kamala can’t control Biden’s policy, don’t blame her for Biden sending bombs to Israel”.

As if Biden isn’t working with his second in command and hand-picked successor on policy. He picked her to lead policy starting next year, but he doesn’t let her have a say in policy right now?

And even if he really is shutting her out like that, she’s been silent about it and completely uncritical of Biden. She could use her campaign to rail against his actions, but she doesn’t. Hell she could (and should if she actually wanted to stop bombing Palestine) attempt to invoke the 25th amendment and take control right now.

And even if that fails, sometimes old men just trip down the stairs and that’s it. Tragic really.

US and UK to boycott Nagasaki bombing memorial after Israel disinvited - Middle East Eye

The US nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 killed tens of thousands of Japanese civilians

The American and British ambassadors to Japan have announced they will skip an upcoming ceremony commemorating the victims of the US’s 1945 atomic bombing because the city’s mayor did not invite the Israeli ambassador.

The Russian and Belarusian ambassadors have also been excluded from the event this Friday by Japanese authorities. The Nagasaki Peace Memorial Ceremony is intended to mark the 79th anniversary of the US atomic bomb attacks on Nagasaki and Hiroshima that killed tens of thousands of Japanese civilians, with many more later dying from radiation poisoning.

The attacks in August 1945 preceded Japan’s unconditional surrender to the US and the end of the Second World War. Julia Longbottom, the UK’s ambassador to Japan, told local reporters that Israel is exercising self-defence in Gaza and should not be treated in the same way as Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.

A travel story in which a white American woman delays a trip to Mongolia for a year because she would have to briefly enter Russia, has what sounds like an uneventful regular ass road trip, forgets what is described as a “piece of paper” but is likely her visa entry card meaning when she tries to exit she doesn’t have a valid visa, nonetheless is allowed to exit without incident after authorities verify her identity, and it is breathlessly written like a harrowing trip through a gulag.

I have no idea what to think about this election now. On one hand Kamala pretty much has all the same policies as Biden, and therefore should have the same weaknesses from those policies (especially with Arab-American voters in Michigan). But on the other hand they might be successfully gaslighting people into thinking she's better somehow, even though her support for Israel is pretty clear. She also obviously hasn't been very popular, but the gaslighting might be working there too.

If she wins, it will be the epitome of Gaslight, Gatekeep, Girlboss.
