imo "cringe" isn't a harsh enough word for it, it's actively evil

[–] AmericaDeserved711@hexbear.net 65 points 1 month ago (2 children)

to expound on this:

while there are plenty of men who should die, they are by-and-large not the ones actually killing themselves. people commit suicide because of alienation. poor people commit suicide at much higher rates. LGBT people commit suicide at much higher rates. do you know what percentage of "male suicides" are actually trans women? me neither. nobody does or ever will

the true beneficiaries of patriarchy, the rich ghouls, men with actual power, are thriving, because the society was built for them. the patriarchy does not value the lives of ordinary men - it culls them for profit by sending them to war or working them to death. patriarchy under capitalism encourages men to die, so maybe you shouldn't

doubleposting but this shit pisses me off. up until recently i was getting really close to ending it. I've always had a firm limit in place of "well it would be too scarring for my family so i could never kill myself" but that was eroding for the the first time ever - even my previous suicide attempt was in the heat of the moment with no real reasoning, but this time I was actively beginning to feel over a sustained period of time that I could not go on, such that it was worth traumatizing my family to escape it. I wrote a detailed suicide note that I have actually yet to delete because I haven't resolved my feelings about it. The only thing that stopped it was getting a job after over a year of unemployment, finally the world telling me I'm not worthless, because in this society worth is productivity.

i look like a guy pretty much 24/7 due to my environment being unsupportive to transitioning, although hopefully that's changing soon. I've gotten better about decoupling my mentality from guydom, but I still struggle with it because I'm kinda trapped in being a guy for the moment, so things like this screenshot still affect me. Exactly how many people stuck in the closet being egged on to suicide is acceptable for these people? How many actual dudes who haven't hurt a fly would have to die before they start to question it? It's things like this that made vindictive suicidal ideation so satisfying. I wish I had the wherewithal to check out and have a dead man's (ha) switch send people like the person in the screenshot my family's info and let them know that they helped cause their suffering. See how flippant they are when blood's on their hands.

I'm sorry you have to go through this, and I'm sorry people in this thread are excusing it.

[–] RION@hexbear.net 18 points 1 month ago

thanks 🙃

Well whenever women make jokes like this it's usually in response to something incredibly misogynistic going on in the zeitgeist sooo

edit: Oh real smooth OP. Here's the actual tweet

And what's being quoted?

So yes, this is not really such a strange thing to say at all.

42k people being shitheads: alright time to tell 4 billion people they should die :)

[–] autism_2@hexbear.net 25 points 1 month ago (1 children)

With this added context, I have decided the tweet being discussed is right and every one of those 42k should die.

Under the JDWON regime we will crucify all moids (forcing them to eat soy patties instead of beef at WcDonalds (the W stands for Women))

[–] BeamBrain@hexbear.net 12 points 1 month ago

the longhouse

Ah, so this is what the Dark Enlightenment is calling it instead of "The Cathedral" now

[–] combat_brandonism@hexbear.net 9 points 1 month ago

obvious video of workplace harassment, itself a product of girlboss (patriarchal) feminism

is-this evidence that patriarchy good

[–] Comp4@hexbear.net 27 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Judge me if you must, but I think it goes too far. I’m a guy at the moment (probably an egg), but there are a lot of oppressed people who fall under the umbrella term "men"

Yes, men suck, but that’s largely because of the patriarchy and the system we live in. As an other poster said the guys killing themselves are not White trust fund guys.

[–] iridaniotter@hexbear.net 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yes, men suck, but that’s largely because of the patriarchy and the system we live in.

Men created the patriarchy. Without the patriarchy there would be no men. Without men there would be no patriarchy. I'm not really sure what you mean by this. Under socialism, capitalists won't largely suck, but there wouldn't be capitalists. The individuals who would have been capitalists wouldn't largely suck, but they'd be completely different people at that point.

[–] Comp4@hexbear.net 14 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

CW: Talk about Suicide

In short. Yes and men created capitalism. Yet a lot of men suffer under capitalism similar to the patriarchy. The men who profit the most from capitalism or patriarchy are most likely not the ones who kill themselves rather its often the most vulnerable and oppressed men.

The OP also felt misleading posting this comment in a vacuum.

I just consider jokes about suicide at least in bad taste having had a suicidal phase in the past. (I fully admit that I have a biased position due to that)

[–] ProletarianDictator@hexbear.net 27 points 1 month ago

Not cool imo. Only time self harm can be remotely funny is when the specific person is a garbage human being. Even then still kinda sus. "Follow your leader" is really the only example I can think of that doesnt seem scummy.

[–] BeamBrain@hexbear.net 22 points 1 month ago (3 children)

As a man, I don't really think it's my place to police how the oppressed class voices their anger.

[–] Aradina@lemmy.ml 30 points 1 month ago (1 children)

This isn't a cry of an oppressed people it's some dumbshit being a dick on the internet, so as an oppressed class I give you permission to say "wtf is wrong with you" at your pleasure.

[–] BeamBrain@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Are you saying women aren't oppressed?

[–] space_comrade@hexbear.net 24 points 1 month ago (1 children)
[–] BeamBrain@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago (2 children)

If the original post isn't "the cry of an oppressed people," then the possible implications are either that women aren't oppressed or the person making the post isn't a woman. I was just trying to narrow it down.

[–] RION@hexbear.net 24 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Or option 3: not everything an oppressed person says is a an earnest cry stemming from their oppression

[–] space_comrade@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Spectacular mental gymnastics lmao.

Just take the L dude.

[–] BeamBrain@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago

Since a lot of the pushback I'm getting is from women, I think I will.

[–] Aradina@lemmy.ml 16 points 1 month ago

No, clearly not.

[–] AmericaDeserved711@hexbear.net 25 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I don't think it's right to act as if women are immune from criticism, especially if they are doing something socially harmful like encouraging people to kill themselves. this tweet is not directed at the oppressor, if she was telling Elon Musk to kill himself that would be one thing

while women are absolutely oppressed in our patriarchal society I think it's wrong and naive to view patriarchy as a system wherein all men are oppressing all women. it's a system wherein a small number of privileged men oppress the rest of us. rhetoric like this plays right into their game

[–] iridaniotter@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

this tweet is not directed at the oppressor,

This tweet was directed at a man saying women should be subjugated Saudi Arabia style

[–] AmericaDeserved711@hexbear.net 12 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

ah well I obviously had no way of knowing that

and it's still a shit response

[–] iridaniotter@hexbear.net 8 points 1 month ago

Right, of course the correct response would be joining a militant women's organization seeking to overthrow the patriarchy. But barring that I suppose all one can do is post...

[–] autism_2@hexbear.net 22 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (2 children)

I can't defend the OP but whenever I see a screenshot of it posted it's in response to some blue check misogynist bullshit with 100 other fascists cheering in the replies and no one can make me empathize with them

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 20 points 1 month ago

Yeah this is the key takeaway. Saying this for no reason is wild and pretty antisocial. Saying it as a response to men doing something horrible is basically just an edgier version of saying "men are trash," which I believe we had settled the discourse on like 6 years ago.

[–] iridaniotter@hexbear.net 11 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Yes, it was in response to a man saying he's "amenable to the saudi arabian approach to womens rights"

[–] LanyrdSkynrd@hexbear.net 21 points 1 month ago

I don't think it's funny, fwiw

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 15 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Suicide is seen as a weakness, so I think that necessarily means that making fun of it is masculine coded and patriarchal.

[–] KurtVonnegut@hexbear.net 23 points 1 month ago

It's the difference between:

Funny: If you feed white people spicy food they will die lmao

Not funny: I am actually glad that the opioid epidemic is happening! Please I want to see more overdoses in West Virginia!

[–] save_vs_death@hexbear.net 8 points 1 month ago (2 children)

it's based if your are making fun of the suicide of the cringe and cringe if you are making fun of the suicide of the based

[–] CascadeOfLight@hexbear.net 12 points 1 month ago

theory-gary This is dialectics

[–] Ildsaye@hexbear.net 8 points 1 month ago

The quality of men would climb sharply if we met target rates of war criminal suicide, assisted or otherwise barbara-pit

[–] GaveUp@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I think this is whatever unless it's being said IRL

Women don't have a rich history of online rhetoric causing them to become terrorists unlike men

Also, since this isn't a directed tweet, the golden rule of you can always walk away from the computer holds true

[–] Lemmygradwontallowme@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Cringe... that's like advocating for boomers to die off, in my humble cis opinion

This, for example, obfuscates/hides the struggle against reactionary powers, especially the current economic system of Capitalism and its western vessels, in order to scapegoat one plausible group for another.

I'd rather we'd abolish the system and its direct, willing benefactors that incentivizes this awfulness, which can but not necessarily equally be nurtured in everyone, than scapegoat the obvious ones like men, baby boomers, corrupt politicians, or religious organizations (tho some obvious ones would, of course, include some of the latter)
