I actually see "I am a racist" most of the time. I strongly considered buying one of these in 2020, but I didn't think I could handle the number of people who would probably not actually read it. (tbf, I pretty much look like a maga)

I'm a middle aged white guy. It's really not that bad. The look of betrayal when they figure out I am in fact mocking them is hilarious.

I’m a middle aged white guy. It’s really not that bad.

Me too!

The look of betrayal when they figure out I am in fact mocking them is hilarious.

That's what attracts me about the idea, but I know I steer the other way as soon as I see a red hat these days. I would never be able to stop wondering about the conversations I wasn't having with people.

[–] vulgarcynic@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Those conversations are wild. I'm a middle age, bearded, tall, chubby white guy that lives in a smaller pnw town and often get blasted in the face with some of the most vial hate speech in passing interactions with these people. It wasn't like this 10 years ago. When we first moved here I was shocked at the shit these guys would openly say to a random stranger. Generally all it takes is a "wrong team bro" for them to get the hint thankfully.

You shouldn't have hate in your heart anyways, but ignorance is endemic in rural areas. Just keep that shit in the barn and trailer park, Carl.

[–] mohammed_alibi@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Its really sad because rural America is a beautiful place where you can still find tight knit community, find ways to be self sufficient to work on your own land. But I'm not white and worry about running into the wrong crowd...

[–] vulgarcynic@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Absolutely. I grew up in pretty pale places and used to be amazed at how welcoming everyone was and how easy it was to find folk to associate with. Fishing, hunting, camping, all that traditional rural stuff.

After graduating and getting out of the area and seeing some of the world, the veil was been lifted. Those people (as a real broad generalization) were polite and welcoming because I had the right lack of melanin. Now, it's far from the truth all over the States, but the past decade has really radicalized people who used to be on a path to being better.

I see it in the generation before us. There's so much vocalized hate I can't fathom what happened. Family members that coached sports teams that were diverse (for where we lived) are now outright spewing racist rhetoric without a hint of self awareness. It's like watching a people turn evil in a horror novel. I've dropped contact with a vast majority of my family because it's exhausting being quote "the liberal in the room" and dealing with the constant shit they spew.

The lines are so clearly defined it doesn't matter that I helped raise their kids. That we used to ride dirt bikes out in the woods. That I remember their first love and first heartbreak. That I remember sitting on the porch sharing a bottle while we celebrated your first grandchild being born. Or mourned over another bottle as we regaled each other with memories of how amazing your mom was when she'd let us stay up all night camped out in your backyard.

Its all been washed away in a tide of nationalism and unchecked ignorance. I miss my family, but I miss hope in humanity even more. Some day we might bite the hand that bleeds us and take arms against the few that rule the many, but it won't be in a world where social media and propaganda news networks exist.

Until then, I mourn my loved ones every day. Whether I lost them to cancer or fox news or the hopelessness of abject poverty. There's a small part of me that will always be open to letting them back in, but it will never be unconditionally again.

saaame. I am very unintentionally Maga coded. I went to a pride event recently and to get in I was walking past it to get to the end of the line. walked past a single guy (white, little pudgy, your average 20 something Maga) holding Trump signs and I walk past and he goes "hey brother! wanna--" and goes to hand me a sign and I couldn't help the look of disgust I gave him with a little "ugh.." and he seemed absolutely gutted. he was gone when I got back to the same corner while in line. I like to think he saw me waiting in line and couldn't face the threat of conflict over his mistake.

I tried to help deescalate a little tussle at a San Francisco nightclub where a progressive-minded young woman (who’d had a few drinks) became very upset seeing a red hat on a guy at the back of the dance floor. It was a parody hat!

(Upon learning you mistook a parody for the real thing, you’d hope to apologize instead of trying to save face by declaring yourself to still be in the right… but, alcohol.)

A modern dunce cap.

[–] Dorkyd68@lemmy.world 43 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

No joke, I see someone wearing one and I walk the other wsy. Anything to avoid conversing with lunatics will make your day better

[–] octopus_ink@lemmy.ml 23 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Same. I love the fact that they all festoon their car and house with Trump/Brandon/Fuck Biden stuff, between that and the hats, it lets me know who to avoid in so many situations.

[–] Nastybutler@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

The bumper stickers and FJB badges on the back of pickup trucks dictate my behavior on the road. "Oh, this truck wants to merge. Wait a tick, is that a MAGA window decal on the rear window? Fuck you, buddy, you ain't getting in here."

"I stopped learning in the fourth grade and have no understanding of anything more complex than a toaster. I am about to impress upon you, in no uncertain terms, just how painfully unaware I am of my own ignorance; whether you want me to or not."

[–] grasshopper_mouse@lemmy.world 32 points 2 months ago (1 children)

From a woman's perspective, I see "I don't respect you or your body and want you to be my TradWife".

[–] lennybird@lemmy.world 17 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Republican incel hot off the latest Jordan Peterson choir-preaching sermon: "Why don't women like me!? It must be them!"

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 13 points 2 months ago

Tim Pool literally said this on his show.

[–] bi_tux@lemmy.world 23 points 2 months ago (1 children)

what's the difference between a klan hood and a maga cap?

the klan hood is actually made in america!

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago

The Klan hood also hides your face. The MAGA hat displays your shamelessness.

[–] iamericandre@lemmy.world 18 points 2 months ago

More like “I am a boot licking fascist”

[–] COASTER1921@lemmy.ml 17 points 2 months ago (1 children)

All red baseball hats are probably going to have this association for many decades to come. That being said, so few people wear baseball hats lately that it's certainly not a big loss.

[–] Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Good thing I'm not the only one who cringes just a bit by seeing an all-red hat.

[–] Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world 17 points 2 months ago

Now I just see “I’m a weirdo who is going to pick a fight with my niece during thanksgiving.”

[–] henfredemars@infosec.pub 17 points 2 months ago (2 children)

There’s a new one in my area that says ULTRA MAGA.

I’m really not sure what that’s supposed to mean.

[–] Maggoty@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago

They subscribed to Fascism Platinum. You still have to lick the boots but now they're premium leather.

[–] SamuelRJankis@lemmy.world 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I've found it's almost irrelevant what the hats have of them. What these people desire is the attention it draws.

For obvious reasons most of these people would be completely unnoticed by society suddenly become the center of attention when wearing this stuff.

Can we popularize the Make racism wrong again hat?

[–] Axxys@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago

I saw one, once. I live in Canada. Googled the dude's name, he was listed as an actual terrorist.

Make America Geriatric Again?

[–] Aceticon@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

This is true.

I've lived in a couple of countries and an interesting thing I found out is just how attuned we are for the country we grew up in to certain markers (accent, clothing, the kind of words people use, etc) of Education, Social Status, City/Countryside origin and so on, but not at all for other countries since most of these things tend to be different from country to country and it takes some time living elsewhere to start reading such things on the locals, and even longer before it becomes instinctive.

(Mind you my experience was just Europe, which can hardly be said to have a vast cultural distance between countries - I mean, it's varied but it doesn't have, say, Japan-to-India levels of contrast - and yet all 3 of the countries I live in for years - Portugal, The Netherlands and Britain - in general have significantly different cultures and vastly different markers for such things)

So it's funny how this specific item has become an amazing signal for people abroad of Uncut Low Education status for Americans.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

They've really fallen off in popularity over the years. I remember back in 2017/2018, it wasn't unusual to see people wandering through downtown Houston in a hat or t-shirt, declaring their allegiance. You'd even get the odd jacked up F-350 with a giant American flag and a ton of pro-Trump graffiti just doing laps on 610 or crisscrossing downtown, particularly on national holidays or after big sporting events.

Now, I'll see a bit of that shit up in the Woodlands or our in Clear Lake. But its nearly extinct in downtown, even when there's a big gun show at the George R. Brown convention center. MAGA stock has tanked.

[–] HawlSera@lemm.ee 4 points 2 months ago

Not inaccurate

[–] samus12345@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

"...and also a hateful piece of shit"

[–] wowwoweowza@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I think a lot of team MAGA might listen at this point to actual reason. We might slow down the ridicule and ramp up the reason.

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 months ago

Team MAGA is a cult, they're never going to listen to reason. You might get through to people who are traditional republican voters who never quite bought into the Trump cult.

[–] MystikIncarnate@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 months ago

I just want to say, I have a pretty nice Nike cap that I got from a previous employer. It's embroidered with the company logo, but otherwise it's pretty much blank. I don't typically wear caps, but this is one of a very very small collection I have (I think it's the only one that I know where it is), when I do.

I can't wear it anymore, and I haven't been able to for years. It's red. The same bright red as the Maga caps. The company logo is white, and square on the front of it, just like where the text is on the Maga caps.

From a distance, they're indistinguishable.

I can't wear it because I don't even want to be confused for one of these Maga jerks, even from a distance. They've basically ruined red ball caps.

Instead of wearing the ball cap in summer, I went and picked up a Tilly hat. It's fine I guess. Not red, which is a big feature.

It sucks because I really like that hat. It fits well. Most Ball caps don't fit right and I'm uncomfortable. I finally found one that's not a literal pain to wear, and I can't wear it anymore because Trump.

Red hat dunce caps!
