Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

Image is of China's ambassador to Afghanistan, Zhao Sheng, meeting Taliban Prime Minister Hasan Akhund in September 2023.

I know the Rambo title card is a hoax.

The COTW was chosen in the wake of the aborted sequel to the attempted assassination of Trump being performed by a guy who is VERY enthusiastic about Ukraine, to the point of trying to sneak Afghan soldiers into Ukraine by setting up a house in Pakistan to house them and then further transport them. He also apparently offered to send thousands of Afghan soldiers to Haiti to help them combat gang violence. Whomst among us doesn't have the numbers of thousands of Afghan soldiers on speed-dial. Do you reckon there's a group chat?

Anyway, while there is still no official recognition of the Taliban's government by any country, China has taken a different course than the late USSR and the US - forming economic in-roads, rather than trying their own invasion. This has been a big boon for the struggling country, with various mines and oil and agriculture deals helping keep things barely afloat. A total disintegration of the social fabric of Afghanistan is not in the interest of any of the powers that border it - China, Pakistan, and Iran, with Russia not too far away - so an interesting dynamic of helping-without-official-recognition has been established. I wonder who will be the first country to fully recognize them?

The COTW (Country of the Week) label is designed to spur discussion and debate about a specific country every week in order to help the community gain greater understanding of the domestic situation of often-understudied nations. If you've wanted to talk about the country or share your experiences, but have never found a relevant place to do so, now is your chance! However, don't worry - this is still a general news megathread where you can post about ongoing events from any country.

The Country of the Week is Afghanistan! Feel free to chime in with books, essays, longform articles, even stories and anecdotes or rants. More detail here.

Israel-Palestine Conflict

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Sources on the fighting in Palestine against Israel. In general, CW for footage of battles, explosions, dead people, and so on:

UNRWA reports on Israel's destruction and siege of Gaza and the West Bank.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists
Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Pro-Russian Telegram Channels:

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language.
https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.
https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.
https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.
https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.
https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.
https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.
https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine Telegram Channels:

Almost every Western media outlet.
https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.
https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

The Jakarta Post - Broadening the prospects for shared future of China-ASEAN community

*Note: I would rate The Jakarta Post to something like SCMP. Sometimes the article itself is fine, sometimes it is Liberalism. The paper itself has ties to the Indonesian ruling class and intellectual elite.

…As Chinese ambassador to ASEAN, I would emphasize that the resolution not only has a profound impact on the future of China, but also pools of vast opportunities for the development of ASEAN countries. It thus will open broader prospects for the China-ASEAN community’s shared future.

First, China’s reform will help China and ASEAN achieve common development. During the past 33 years, the two parties have joined hands to pursue modernization.

…The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) projects such as the China-Laos Railway and the Whoosh Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway have helped promote regional connectivity and economic development along the line. The successful and vibrant China-ASEAN relationship has brought tremendous tangible benefits to the 2 billion people in the region.

…Second, China’s further reform and opening up will inject new impetus to China-ASEAN relations. The resolution outlines plans for fostering new quality productive forces, nurturing new areas for international cooperation, including next-generation information technology, artificial intelligence, aviation and aerospace, new energy, new materials, high-end equipment, biomedicine and quantum technology.

ASEAN is drafting the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 and its strategic plans, and making great efforts in developing the digital economy, green economy and blue economy, as well as other emerging industries. With more and more confluence of interests, China and ASEAN can align their strategies to explore more potential cooperation in the future.

China-ASEAN cooperation on clean energy has continued to expand in recent years. Chinese brands account for 67 percent of electric vehicles sold in ASEAN, contributing to the energy transition in our region.

…China stays committed to fully implementing the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative and the Global Civilization Initiative, and calls for an equal and orderly multipolar world and universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization. China will continue to implement the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) in a high-quality manner and promote regional economic integration. China will continue to unleash the opportunities of BRI cooperation to further enhance regional connectivity.

Just based off how things have been progressing I'm predicting another wave of explosions tomorrow and perhaps even a full-on invasion by the genocide corps.

Beijing sanctions nine Pentagon contractors after US arms deal for Taiwan

All are military contractors for the Pentagon, primarily specialising in aircraft modification, integration and upgrades.

The ministry said that Beijing would freeze their assets and properties in China. In addition, groups and individuals in China are now prohibited from any transactions with the companies.

[–] SoyViking@hexbear.net 6 points 1 hour ago

How hard will the companies and the Taiwan separatists be hit by this? Is the lack of access to Chinese resources and manufacturing going to set them back in any meaningful sense or is it mostly a symbolic gesture?

I’m repurposing a comment I left on a post about Palantir’s involvement in the pager attacks (posted to c chapotraphouse).

Palantir CEO Alex Karp appeared as the main interview on Real Time with Bill Maher on Friday. He is an enthusiastic believer in the moral authority and superiority of the US.

He says the future of modern warfare will be peer to peer and drone to drone. “You’re going to be using software to control small instruments and there’s going to be hundreds of thousands of them.” He mentions fighting China and Russia specifically.

I don’t know if this is news but interesting to hear him say a lot of evil shit out-loud on a pretty mainstream platform. Also I watched it after the pager attack happened so it took on extra significance.

edit - fixed spelling of guy’s name

You didn't have to fix your spelling this piece of trash doesn't deserve that respect.

Some positive news in this sea of torment, death and terrorism:

The DPRK's Women's U-20 National Football Team won 1-0 over the genocidal entity, the "United States", and have reached the final of the 2024 Women's U-20 World Cup, ready to face Japan.

The DPRK has a pretty impressive Women's U-20 record, they won the 2006 final against China in Russia, reached the final and lost to the "United States" in 2008 in Chile, won the final against France in 2016 in Papua New Guinea and now have reached their fourth final in Colombia.

They won their three group stage matches (6-2 vs Argentina, 9-0 vs Costa Rica and 2-0 vs Netherlands), in the Round of 16 they beat Austria 5-2, in the Quarter Finals they beat Brasil 1-0 and now they've beaten the "US" 1-0 in the Semi-Finals.

Let's go ladies!

“The Letter was Signed by Edmundo With his Own Pen”: Jorge Rodriguez to teleSUR - Telesur

The official noted that the Venezuelan government has documented that it was a negotiation between executive vice president Delcy Rodríguez and the Spanish government.

Article

In an interview with the multiplatform teleSUR, the president of the National Assembly of Venezuela, Jorge Rodríguez, gave details about the letter of recognition of former presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia towards the Venezuelan institutions and the presidential results of last July 28, and stated that the document González signed with his own pen.

On signing the letter, Rodriguez noted that (those involved in the process) “we had committed to keep in reserve the letter of Edmundo González Urrutia -former opposition candidate for the presidency of Venezuela-“.

The text marks a milestone from the headline, says Rodríguez, because “it is not recognizing either the Assembly of Guaidó or Dinora Figuera… , but recognizes the National Assembly that voted the people of Venezuela last December of 2020”.

This consensus is based, according to Rodríguez, on “a request he had made (Urrutia) and the Venezuelan government had no “problem” in maintaining “in reverse (the) document”, however, both González Urrutia and his lawyer violated that agreement.

The president of the National Assembly says that “from within the Venezuelan extreme right, the publication of a kind of transcription of the original letter appears”.

On the other hand, Rodríguez explains that only one demand was made in the delivery of the letter, consisting of González Urrutia leaving his signature on each sheet, so that it would not be pointed out later that the Venezuelan institutions had altered the content. The senior Venezuelan official also noted that the former candidate himself decided to hand it over to him.

“Some people close to him (Edmundo González Urrutia) contacted me and raised the possibility of having some exchanges with Mr González Urrutia for his intention to apply for political asylum in the Kingdom of Spain”, Rodriguez underlines referring to the processing of the departure of Edmundo González into Spanish soil.

The official states that, in principle, communication was established by means of a telephone call and then also contacted Urrutia directly via a telephone call, The President of the Assembly was asked to meet him on 6 September.

In addition, the official remarked on this line, referring to the political asylum process that the Venezuelan government has fully documented, which was a two-party negotiation: between executive vice president Delcy Rodríguez and the Spanish government.

The meeting led to Venezuela offering the necessary safe-conduct for the departure of Urrutia, as well as the approval for an aircraft of the Spanish air force to make the trip.

From Pablo Escobar's telegram

THE MOSSAD-MI6 CONNECTION

This is deliciously intriguing; it comes from a very well-informed Russian intel source.

So the story goes that the head of MI6 Richard Moore ordered his spooks - in Hungary - to put explosives in the pagers in case Hezbollah got "out of control”.

But" among the English T.E. Lawrences", there were not only friends of Israel, but also enemies of Moore. They handed over the alarm code to the Mossad. So, "without hesitation, they neutralized all of Moore's agents with one blow."

This might indeed be directly linked to the Brit nest of spiders. There won’t be a smoking gun, of course. What is already happening is the whole Brit press hysterically stating this was just a tricky Mossad op - and MI6 was not involved at all.

"This is how the legend of the omnipotence of the Mossad” continues.
