I fucked up my algo watching animal grooming and cute cat videos. Funny enough something I like to watch because it's soothing has turned into something that ruins my day.

Kind of fucked that people are using animal abuse for clicks.

Very nice! Thanks, Google! agony-deep

I really feel bad for kids watching funny animal videos then this shit shows up.

[–] AmericaDeserved711@hexbear.net 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

gotta train them early to be sociopaths. after all, how else will they succeed in capitalist society?

Ch!nlords call it "numbing" and do it on purpose to themselves and each other. I'm pretty sure at least some of Google's workers are also ch!nlords.

Whenever i search for some somewhat obscure videos, like for an uncommon bass guitar or a highly regional dish, i get recommended horrible videos because the algo gets bored or gives up? I dunno. I was just looking a sound sample for an Ibanez bass guitar from 1974, i didn't need to see the thumbnail for a youtube short of some guy cutting his face off. No thank you.

When I look up obscure stuff it just spits out right-wing outrage channels complaining a out wokeness and the like.

[–] PaulSmackage@hexbear.net 10 points 1 month ago

It always shows up as a random playlist, too. No idea what would prompt it.

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah I wish I knew why it does that. I know if you just put in gibberish sometimes it comes back with like beheading thumbnails.

[–] PaulSmackage@hexbear.net 12 points 1 month ago

It's even more annoying because it's like, i got tired of people shoving these videos in my face 15 years ago, i don't need my own computer to be doing it too.

I think that the algo works by spotting correlation patterns in a "people who watched x also watched y" kind of way, so if you're looking at something really obscure, small aberrations and maybe even individual histories can distort the resulting recommendations because it just has fewer accounts to pull from. Just speculation.

In order to use YouTube I need:

DF YouTube (Distraction Free) - no sidebar, no recommendations at the end of the video

Clickbait Remover for Youtube - thumbnails are a couple seconds into the video, titles are in all lower case

Hide shorts for Youtube™

ClearURLs - gets rid of tracking from URLs

Decentraleyes - I'm not positive but I'm pretty sure I need it

uBlockOrigin - ad blocker that you can also use to delete elements that it misses otherwise

SponsorBlock for YouTube - Skip Sponsorships

Shit is fucking crazy, comrade

[–] fen@hexbear.net 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Unhook replaces the function of DF and Hide Shorts, in addition to a few more nice options for hiding algo-slop. would highly recommend it! also Dearrow, which was made by the developer of SponsorBlock. it does the same thing as Clickbait Remover, but with added customization and community submitted replacements.

Just installed them. Didn't realize how much I was advertised to in the home page

Omg ty for compiling this list, I need it so bad

There finding people who put animals in bad situations only to rescue them on video for clicks

[–] Stache_@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I was gunna comment this too, it’s becoming a real serious problem. These disgusting people saw how lucrative these animal rescue videos have become and have started intentionally putting these animals (usually young puppies and kittens) in danger and hurting them only to act like they’re “saving” them. It’s so horrific.

[–] vegeta1@hexbear.net 3 points 1 month ago

Its crazy. Those vids have millions of views. Then others see this as a lane and do it too

[–] keepcarrot@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I mean, people have done this with their own kids. Not that it makes either situation better, just unsurprising.

[–] vegeta1@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago

Exploit the kids for clicks I know of. Putting them in danger in similar Idk but wouldn't be surprised

[–] TheLepidopterists@hexbear.net 16 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Gonna have to watch out for this, watch funny animal videos with my kid on my phone sometimes before bedtime.

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 17 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

It's kind of insidious because the video thumbnails don't break any rules and the videos themselves are usually about rescues, but they use stills from the video of the animal not well for clicks.

[–] Infamousblt@hexbear.net 16 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I have done okay fixing my algo by reporting anything and everything that is even remotely offensive to me. Google seems to get the hint pretty quick that not only do I not want to engage in that content, I'm going to bog down their reporting algo with reports about it.

[–] Bloobish@hexbear.net 7 points 1 month ago

Same, really wish there was a macro app for it so I didn't always have to individually select the category of what is offensive on the video

[–] Bloobish@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago

I'm sick and tired of having to consciously curate my feed to avoid being provided horrors beyond humanity flooding to my recommends list by the fucking torment nexus

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 12 points 1 month ago

Some fuckwad with a transphobic avatar and alt-right shit for their comments was re-posting Agu videos to gather clicks so they could lead people down the pipeline. Reported and blocked the channel, but I doubt anything will come of it.

There's this former cop and veteran who was making Great Replacement videos and doing TV/movie reactions. He's still up and running a year after his blatant copyright violations. Absolutely worthless moderation that can't even do oppressive capitalism right.

I HATE THE ALGORITHM

I HATE THE ALGORITHM

[–] 12022081631@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago

the precursor to me seeking out piped.video and nadeko and all that was fully divesting from the yt algorithm. its such crap. i used that Unhook addon to remove all the recommendations, autoplays, and "inapt search results" (yeah, they actually just put recommended videos in the middle of every search result because fuck you)

goddamn i have barely been watching youtube lately but im still mad

[–] ksynwa@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 1 month ago

Reject YouTube algorithm*: https://unhook.app/

* Not open source

I use YouTube enhancement suite and have cinema mode always on. I can't see recommended videos, I can't see comments and I can't see the thumbnail. When I can I just use VLC though.
