Killing probably a whole % of your population at this point and disabling a shitload more in myriad ways because you didn't want to wear a mask at applebee's probably had nothing to do with it.

[–] hexaflexagonbear@hexbear.net 35 points 1 month ago

Think this is more about the 1951-present trend rather than the 2021 value specifically.

Fr. I do not believe these malthusians for a second biting their nails over population decline when they were clucking about how all the deaths and mass disabling would be “worth it” to keep business as usual.

They refuse to protect existing people and would gleefully see 90% of the human race die just for a cheap laugh.

Sounds like Musk...

Could it be that literally nobody can afford to live and therefore are choosing to not start families? Or could it be the WOKES. Must be the wokes because THE ECONOMY is stronger than it has ever been! i-love-not-thinking

If we can economically ruin Europe over Ukraine, maybe we can get a bunch of European immigrants coming to the US for work?

MFW Malthusians literally think that their Malthusian ideas are the solution to the natural consequences of their Malthusian policies they successfully implemented before.

[–] Des@hexbear.net 54 points 1 month ago (2 children)

here comes the bipartisan solutions to create as many "accidents you can't take care of yourself"

oh what was that alienation and isolation, covid and microplastics are meaning even potential "accidents" aren't happening anymore?

fry

[–] nothx@hexbear.net 28 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Microplastics are stored in the balls.

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 17 points 1 month ago

Yum I love microplastics!

capitalist-laugh: “Sorry kiddo, cities are for rich people now! And no, we’re not hiring! Stay in your hometown forever, Mr fancy pants. I’m sure you don’t mind spending the rest of your life living with mummy and daddy.”

porky-scared-flipped: “wait, why is no one having KIDS!1! Yeah, I sabotaged millennials and Gen z’s chance to connect with the world, what does that have to do with people not having kids?”

Good! The world will be better off when the USA fades away.

[–] jack@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

This is about the slowest possible way to achieve that

[–] asg101@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

True, but probably the only realistic way short of reheating their civil war.

[–] jack@hexbear.net 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Imagine not thinking the US is going to collapse in our lifetime

[–] asg101@hexbear.net 1 points 1 month ago

I lost my youthful optimism half a century ago.

[–] Wheaties@hexbear.net 30 points 1 month ago

Impressive that covid lead to both a spike and a dip

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 26 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Heaven forbid we allow more migrants, though.

[–] GnastyGnuts@hexbear.net 12 points 1 month ago (2 children)

That's John Mearsheimer's big case for immigration. He talks about how developed countries get that "inverted pyramid" demographic spread (lots of old people, low birthrate, fewer young people) and how immigration is actually America's edge over China and Russia in that regard.

America pisses it away, again.

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 23 points 1 month ago

I've actually seen immigration framed as superexploitation - labor is the superior of capital, so countries can suck up labor from underdeveloped countries and use them to advance their own economies even further. Even if they send back remittances it never makes up for the loss of labor power.

But America and Europe are too racist to actually take advantage of this dynamic.

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago

At this point reactionaryism is the lysenkoism of social sciences.

Too stubborn to even do anything other than the most far-right thing possible, even if it saves your right-wing ass.

[–] MF_COOM@hexbear.net 26 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Whoah did people in the US die like that in WWI? Or is that the "Spanish" flu?

[–] Yuritopiaposadism@hexbear.net 23 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

https://www.paho.org/en/who-we-are/history-paho/purple-death-great-flu-1918#:~:text=The%20United%20States%20lost%20675%2C000,but%20they%20were%20too%20late.

The United States lost 675,000 people to the Spanish flu in 1918-more casualties than World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War combined. Pharmaceutical companies worked around the clock to come up with a vaccine to fight the Spanish flu, but they were too late.

[–] ashinadash@hexbear.net 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That's way less than covid deaths, damn.

[–] CantaloupeAss@hexbear.net 10 points 1 month ago

Population was way smaller

[–] FALGSConaut@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago

My guess would be the flu pandemic since "only" a little over 100k Americans died in WW1

[–] GnastyGnuts@hexbear.net 24 points 1 month ago

Dumbass country reaps what it sows, continues to be ginormous dumbass country.

[–] peeonyou@hexbear.net 17 points 1 month ago

oh nooooooooooooo what will become of our infinite growth?! won't somebody please think of the capitalism?!

[–] halykthered@lemmy.ml 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

And people wonder why abortion privilages are being dismantled.

[–] merthyr1831@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's such a short term goal.

You get a few more births, but then a load of dead mothers, abandoned kids less likely to become skilled workers, and more women refusing to have sex in case they're burdened with a kid they didn't want.

I mean we all know it's a dumb policy but sometimes I'm reminded that US fascists seem to want the mythical economy driven by (wage) slavery AND highly skilled technocrats

[–] Sodium_nitride@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 1 month ago

They'll get the highly skilled technocrats from outside

[–] grandepequeno@hexbear.net 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That can't be accurate though right? Like, when you account for people entering the country (legally or illegally) is the population really still declining?

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 19 points 1 month ago

It's the rate of growth that's declining, so population was still rising the whole time. The numbers might be correct, but personally I'm not going to try to figure out the integral to check if it adds up and will instead simply post barbara-pit for the fascist who posted it.

[–] infuziSporg@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago

America, you did a no growth.
