I'm not a hacker, but when I use the terminal, etc. I feel like one and know I look like one to the vast majority of people, and we all need our cool feeling moments.

Way back in the 1000's, I got detention for ctrl-breaking out of an autoexec.bat and looking around the hard drive. I also lost an internship.

I use Linux. Using apt to update everything looks so much cooler than windows updates. It's also a lot more informative when there's issues.

The fact that it makes me look like a Hollywood hacker, at least when I've been lazy and not updated for a while, is just a nice bonus.

Fun, but I like being able to explain what I'm doing. Or at least start, before eyes glaze over and I come to a halt, wondering if I'm actually a lot deeper down this rabbit hole than I thought...

Well we know you can spell update so you’re already better than most windows users.

Until this day, always when i open a terminal on my colleague's Mac and fix his problem with mostly [ up,up,up -> Enter ] he keeps looking at me like i just took a dump in front of his house, for the rest of the day.

Edit: we have worked together for 20 years by now

[ up,up,up -> Enter ]

So if I understand this right, his terminal history consists entirely of commands you've run to fix his recurring problems.

[–] cheddar@programming.dev 13 points 8 hours ago

Could it be that you took a dump in front of his house before fixing his problem?

[–] odium@programming.dev 1 points 8 hours ago

I have the opposite experience where I opened a terminal on a colleague's Mac and fixed his env variables and he was mostly impressed.

TBF, anyone who can open Terminal can probably hack the average Facebook Grandma.

"Can I have your bank details please?"

"Sure"

[–] Speculater@lemmy.world 5 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

"Alright then, I am a hacker."

[–] thenextguy@lemmy.world 6 points 7 hours ago

Not a hacker. Just a very naughty boy. Now go away.

I sorta miss this but I am far enough that I tend to only deal with IT people so im sorta insulated from this.
