Sputnik 1 (/ˈspʌtnɪk, ˈspʊtnɪk/, ‹See Tfd›Russian: Спутник-1, Satellite 1) was the first artificial Earth satellite. It was launched into an elliptical low Earth orbit by the Soviet Union on 4 October 1957 as part of the Soviet space program. It sent a radio signal back to Earth for three weeks before its three silver-zinc batteries became depleted. Aerodynamic drag caused it to fall back into the atmosphere on 4 January 1958. The world's first observation was made at the school observatory in Rodewisch (Saxony).

It was a polished metal sphere 58 cm (23 in) in diameter with four external radio antennas to broadcast radio pulses. Its radio signal was easily detectable by amateur radio operators, and the 65° orbital inclination made its flight path cover virtually the entire inhabited Earth.

The satellite's success was unanticipated by the United States. This precipitated the American Sputnik crisis and triggered the Space Race, part of the Cold War. The launch was the beginning of a new era of political, military, technological, and scientific developments. The word sputnik is Russian for satellite when interpreted in an astronomical context; its other meanings are spouse or traveling companion.

Tracking and studying Sputnik 1 from Earth provided scientists with valuable information. The density of the upper atmosphere could be deduced from its drag on the orbit, and the propagation of its radio signals gave data about the ionosphere.

Sputnik 1 was launched during the International Geophysical Year from Site No.1/5, at the 5th Tyuratam range, in Kazakh SSR (now known as the Baikonur Cosmodrome). The satellite traveled at a peak speed of about 8 km/s (18,000 mph), taking 96.20 minutes to complete each orbit. It transmitted on 20.005 and 40.002 MHz, which were monitored by radio operators throughout the world. The signals continued for 22 days until the transmitter batteries depleted on 26 October 1957. On 4 January 1958, after three months in orbit, Sputnik 1 burned up while reentering Earth's atmosphere, having completed 1,440 orbits of the Earth, and travelling a distance of approximately 70,000,000 km (43,000,000 mi).

Sputnik 1 def my fave satellite. I have a borderline special interest in it.

Crush was feeling down towards the end of the day since she was inundated with work. Said she might call out tomorrow. Think I might just check up on her tomorrow see if she's feeling any better if we don't see each other. When we were on our down period two months ago I kind of got in my own head and kept thinking that maybe I had done something upset her even though she had told me that she was feeling worn out from work.

When I hear a lib talk about how scary/worse a trump reelection would be, I have a knee jerk reaction to bring up Biden since he's currently the president doing terrible things. It comes out like a sneeze, I can't help it. It makes me side eye them for not being scared. Are their politics really just perception and immaterial? I think the libs in my life think I'm a closet Trump supporter now though.

I know fuck all about South Africa, but I'm debating a white S. African "leftist" friend and he's defending the white farmers against calls for land reform.

I need a car to go anywhere. My tires leak and I can't afford to replace them right now. I got to a "free air" place. The pump is torn out of the housing. I go across the street and pay 2$ to have a machine pump air. The pump's pressure sensor is so badly out of calibration that i can't make it pump air. I would use the tire inflator i bought for this purpose but it broke due to shoddy construction.

America. A nation by cars, for cars, of cars.

Some DIY punk venues should see if Kyle Rittenhouse is still looking to tour. That way he'd die

Dumping some personal mental health thoughts, CW: depression

spoilerI'm feeling mentally unwell all of the sudden.

My last depression was the worst of my life and when it started getting better I constantly worried about slipping back into it. Anything that reminded me of that time made me feel like I was being dragged back to the depths of hell, but over time I felt it less. I just stuck to my routines and tried not to jinx my good fortune. I felt like those baseball players who won't change their socks because they're on a hot streak. It's been a couple years since then.

The last week I've been having random anxiety not seemingly connected to anything going on in my life, just being amped up. I've also been easily angered and feeling more awkward in my social interactions than normal. Today I woke up very tired even though I slept 8 hours. I'm feeling a lot of the physical symptoms I get when I'm depressed.

I'm just going to keep doing the stuff that got me out of the last depression and not worry too much about it.

It did seem to help to type this out, so I'm going to hit "post", but no response is necessary.

Might get into esoteric knowledge. Mostly because it seems like a cool thing to say, "yeah I'm really into esoteric knowledge". Is this advisable

david cronenbergs crash rules. robotically alienated human beings paradoxically seeking something more "real" through one of the core embodiments of violent, isolating alienation (the dangerous, atomizing automobile) which really at its core is just them seeking the ultimate escape from their conditions (psychosexual worship of the empty void that is death). u can def just watch it as like an exploratory tone piece around shameful/taboo sexual drives (& it works really well on that level too) but if u dive a little deeper there's some really interesting contradictions being explored there.

When I got my covid vaccine yesterday, a couple drops of the vaccine dripped out of my arm when the pharmacist was administering it, I probably got enough for it to work though, right? stress

I'm nervous because last time it beat my ass the next day and this time I also got the flu shot and all I have is pain at the covid injection spot

okay, so the thing joe biden loves to do where he looks at a problem for the president and says "damn, the president should do something about this" and then walking away and doing nothing is infuriating, but i also wish i could do that my job

looks directly at massive job for me "damn, the [my job title] around here should do something about that" before sneaking off into a corner to browse hexbear on the clock

Hold up, the Silent Hill 2 remake is coming out next week? I'm kind of tempted to try it out since I've gotten into psychological horror games over past 2-3 years, but never played the original Silent Hill series. Well... kinda. I did try SH1, but something about the controls just didn't sit right with me so I ended up not sticking with it for long.

M partner always gets on my ass bc I don’t pronounce s’s at the end of syllables when i speak Spanish

Like calm down, you speak Portuguese where half the words are missing complete syllables from the Iberian Latin words Spanish and Portuguese both descended from. Just bc you updated the orthography don’t mean nothing I saw what you did to the l’s and n’s! Lol

While on a smoke break at work overheard a bro talking to his other bro friends (my city has 4 colleges and one is right next to my work) about i guess philosophy I dunno, what I heard this absolute dunce say was "I think the end of history isn't an event so much as everyone's personal responsibility."

I should just be able to physically assault someone for saying shit like this. Not only is that an aggressively stupid thing to say in public, the fact that your thought processes led whatever you just learned in the last 2 months since you graduated high school to be interpreted in a way that could be expressed in that sentence is deeply disturbing.

If we completely restructured the economy and invented some mirqcle technology that reduces CO2 concentration, in 30 years CHUDs will be convinced climate change was fake lol.
