No serious injuries, thankfully. What a colossal screw up though.

The HMNZS Manawanui - a specialist dive and hydrographic vessel - was conducting a reef survey when it hit the reef on Saturday night.

Reef successfully surveyed. Results: it's there.

Well, it was.... That ship is going to release so many hydrocarbons, the reef may not survive.

Trying to take macro photos.

Identifying reef: “Yup, it’s a reef.”

How strong do you think that reef is?

Only one way to know!

Feel bad for the crew, but damn I love that succinct punchy headline.

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 21 points 1 month ago (1 children)

“Burnt down, fell over, then sank into the swamp.”

[–] chemical_cutthroat@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

And then we built another one...

[–] Ilovethebomb@lemmy.nz 16 points 1 month ago

It really does sum up the story quite well, doesn't it?

[–] Zachariah@lemmy.world 22 points 1 month ago

Yeah, that’s not very typical, I’d like to make that point.

[–] bhamlin@lemmy.world 20 points 1 month ago

They certainly have the element of surprise down. That ship is doing the three things you generally don't expect a ship to do.

Over 100 mil nzd to replace, I'm not sure if we have insurance.

[–] absGeekNZ@lemmy.nz 5 points 1 month ago

Surely not, we can't have new ferries this other boat, well it just isn't on the cards.

[–] Sarothazrom@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago

Can't wait for Oceanliner Designs to cover this lol

[–] absGeekNZ@lemmy.nz 7 points 1 month ago

Well the front is not supposed to fall off, is it.

[–] HappycamperNZ@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Well... shit....

[–] TriflingToad@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

ship runs aground, catches fire and sinks

This sounds like a looney tunes bit

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Ugh that's embarrassing. Time to call my friend in the navy give him shit for crashing his boat.

[–] TriflingToad@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

I imagine the conversation is just "ha! no boat having ass!" *hang-up noise*

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 3 points 1 month ago

"Hey bro I heard you crashed your boat haha" him "I'm an aircraft mechanic"
