Image is of Assad's presidential palace in 2013. There's more images of it in this article, though the words in it aren't worth reading.

Here is Assad's version of events. I like to imagine he's making one of those Youtuber apology videos where they sigh at the start and talk in a chastised yet somewhat defensive tone of voice.

As terrorism spread across Syria and ultimately reached Damascus on the evening of Saturday 7th December 2024, questions arose about the president's fate and whereabouts. This occurred amidst a flood of misinformation and narratives far removed from the truth, aimed at recasting international terrorism as a liberation revolution for Syria.

At such a critical juncture in the nation’s history, where truth must take precedence, it is essential to address these distortions. Unfortunately, the prevailing circumstances at the time, including a total communication blackout for security reasons, delayed the release of this statement. This does not replace a detailed account of the events that unfolded, which will be provided when the opportunity allows.

First, my departure from Syria was neither planned nor did it occur during the final hours of the battles, as some have claimed. On the contrary, I remained in Damascus, carrying out my duties until the early hours of Sunday 8th December 2024. As terrorist forces infiltrated Damascus, I moved to Latakia in co-ordination with our Russian allies to oversee combat operations. Upon arrival at the Hmeimim airbase that morning, it became clear that our forces had completely withdrawn from all battle lines and that the last army positions had fallen. As the field situation in the area continued to deteriorate, the Russian military base itself came under intensified attack by drone strikes.

With no viable means of leaving the base, Moscow requested that the base’s command arrange an immediate evacuation to Russia on the evening of Sunday 8th December. This took place a day after the fall of Damascus following the collapse of the final military positions and the resulting paralysis of all remaining state institutions.

At no point during these events did I consider stepping down or seeking refuge, nor was such a proposal made by any individual or party. The only course of action was to continue fighting against the terrorist onslaught.

I reaffirm that the person who, from the very first day of the war, refused to barter the salvation of his nation for personal gain, or to compromise his people in exchange for numerous offers and enticements is the same person who stood alongside the officers and soldiers of the army on the front lines, just metres from terrorists in the most dangerous and intense battlefields. He is the same person who, during the darkest years of the war, did not leave but remained with his family alongside his people, confronting terrorism under bombardment and the recurring threats of terrorist incursions into the capital over 14 years of war. Furthermore, the person who has never abandoned the resistance in Palestine and Lebanon, nor betrayed his allies who stood by him, cannot possibly be the same person who would forsake his own people or betray the army and nation to which he belongs.

I have never sought positions for personal gain but have always considered myself as a custodian of a national project, supported by the faith of the Syrian people, who believed in its vision. I have carried an unwavering conviction in their will and ability to protect the state, defend its institutions, and uphold their choices to the very last moment.

When the state falls into the hands of terrorism and the ability to make a meaningful contribution is lost, any position becomes void of purpose, rendering its occupation meaningless. This does not, in any way, diminish my profound sense of belonging to Syria and her people – a bond that remains unshaken by any position or circumstance. It is a belonging filled with hope that Syria will once again be free and independent.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.

After campaigning against Donald Trump as a grave threat to democracy, President Joe Biden says it’s not his concern that Trump doesn’t “abide by the rules of the democracy we’ve established,” and Biden again committed to a smooth transition of power — including attending Trump’s inauguration.

“Of course I am,” Biden said, asked in an interview with MeidasTouch host Ben Meiselas if he would attend the ceremony after Trump skipped his. “The only president ever to avoid inauguration is the guy who’s about to be inaugurated.”

Asked about inviting Trump to the Oval Office after November’s election, Biden said it was “how we’re supposed to be,” even after Trump tried to subvert the 2020 election.

Diplomatic Standoff in the Kattegat Resolved: Chinese Freighter Will Depart After Inspection by Chinese Authorities

Chinese authorities, observed by representatives from Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Germany, has inspected the Yi Peng 3, a bulk carrier anchored in the Kattegat for weeks following Nordic allegations of involvement in sabotaging underwater communication cables, presumably at Russia’s behest. The inspection was facilitated through high-level talks between Chinese and Nordic diplomats, hosted by Denmark's Moderate Party-controlled Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The allegations stem from cable failures in the Baltic Sea on November 17 and 18, which Western authorities were quick to label as "sabotage." China has denied any involvement, stating it has "no knowledge" of the incident, while Russia dismissed the accusations as "absurd," citing the lack of evidence.

The Yi Peng 3, returning from a routine voyage to Russia, suspended its journey in response to the allegations. The vessel remained anchored in international waters within Denmark's exclusive economic zone, where Nordic authorities lack the legal jurisdiction to detain or inspect it without China's consent. To avoid escalating tensions, China has opted to keep the vessel stationary in the Kattegat until now. Nordic naval vessels have monitored the ship closely throughout its stay.

The case has also drawn the attention of the United States, whose embassy in Copenhagen has reportedly pressed Danish military and civilian officials from several agencies for intelligence on the vessel. Observers suggest that elements in the US leadership may be deeply concerned about perceived Chinese involvement in what they view as Russian sabotage targeting NATO infrastructure. Reflecting China’s commitment to resolving the issue, a "fairly large" delegation, as described by Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, participated in talks in Copenhagen. Rasmussen commended all parties, including China, for their cooperation.

Despite these efforts, the resolution fell short of Nordic expectations. Initial demands from Nordic governments called for the Yi Peng 3 to dock in a Swedish port for investigation and crew interrogation by Swedish police. Instead, they were compelled to accept a compromise allowing only Chinese authorities to carry out the inspection, with Western observers restricted to a passive role and prohibited from conducting their own inquiries.

This incident recalls a similar case last year involving another Chinese vessel accused by Western governments of disrupting communication cables in the Gulf of Finland. That ship was permitted to leave without inspection.

TASS "Domestic mRNA vaccine for cancer will be free"

Big names. Gamaleya is very famous, known for developing the earliest vaccine for COVID, and the Blokhin oncology research center is the largest in both Europe and Russia. Hope it's true and widely available.

spoilerThe creation of a cancer vaccine using the mRNA platform will cost the state about 300 thousand rubles for each specific patient, and will be administered free of charge. This was reported by Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, chief oncologist of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, General Director of the National Research Center of Radiology Andrei Kaprin.

[snip]

The vaccine was developed jointly by several scientific teams - the Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology, P. Hertsen Moscow Oncology Research Institute (MORI) and the N.N. Blokhin National Medical Research Center of Oncology. The beginning of distribution of the vaccine to patients is planned for early 2025.

[–] miz@hexbear.net 9 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

300 thousand rubles

~$2900 USD

[–] SoyViking@hexbear.net 5 points 17 minutes ago* (last edited 17 minutes ago)

About the same cost as an American ambulance ride.

[–] xiaohongshu@hexbear.net 11 points 2 hours ago (2 children)

It looks like they got the mRNA nanoparticle technology to work (nothing new in the West but still a significant advance for Russia) and is starting to test this on human patients.

The question is what kind of cancers and what are their targets? From the press release it’s not stated clearly and only said melanoma and lung cancer patients will undergo the first trials. But both are very different types of cancer that require different targets, unless they mean that they have several cancer vaccines undergoing trials at the same time.

Since each cancer is different and there are a ton of different cancer mechanisms, they probably have to design a different vaccine per patient. They probably need to collect cancer cell samples, and then change the vaccine mRNA payload accordingly. At least I would guess that's what's happening, I don't know anything about oncology.

[–] companero@hexbear.net 6 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

They do say they will tailor the vaccine for each recipient with algorithms/AI. I don't know how it works, but maybe that could allow them to target different types of cancer?

"The vaccine" could be like, a template, with parameters that get filled in case-by-case.

[–] xiaohongshu@hexbear.net 10 points 1 hour ago

Yes it looks like they got the delivery platform of the mRNA vaccine to work. And it can be personalized by drawing on the protein targets from each patient’s tumor directly, but this is the costly part.

[–] SamotsvetyVIA@hexbear.net 11 points 2 hours ago

If anyone with a background wants to read more on the "platform" or delivery system, but I'm afraid it's nothing new about mRNA that we don't already know:

  3. India - 16 trillion.
  4. Russia - 6.9 trillion.
  5. Japan - 6.6 trillion.
  6. Germany - 6 trillion.
  7. Brazil - 4.7 trillion.
  8. Indonesia - 4.7 trillion.
  9. France - 4.4 trillion.
  10. Britain - 4.3 trillion.
[–] CleverOleg@hexbear.net 20 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Reminder: an iPhone manufactured in China for $300 and sold in the US for $1,000 adds $300 in GDP to China and $700 in GDP to the US.

A cup of coffee that sells for $3.00 in the US but the farmer in Nicaragua makes $0.03 on the beans adds $2.97 to US GDP and $0.03 to Nicaraguan GDP.

Now, because we’re all Marxists here, consider where the value is being created. And additionally, for those of you who’ve read volume 2 of Capital, you know that it’s only in the sphere of production where value is actually created.

Such an incredible amount of US’ GDP is actually just the appropriation of surplus value from the Global South. It’s almost sort of like neo-merchant capitalism.

[–] immuredanchorite@hexbear.net 7 points 50 minutes ago

Bourgeois economists: No, by transporting it to the US and selling it for more, even though the cost of transporting each iPhone is a few cents we created the value of that $1,000 iPhone. China only created $300 of value. You simply don't understand economics like us official court economists. nerd

[–] jack@hexbear.net 10 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Damn, China may one day be the largest economy in the world! Not yet though, I'm sure.

[–] xiaohongshu@hexbear.net 10 points 1 hour ago (2 children)

It already is, the US GDP calculation is extremely bloated with the rentier FIRE sector.

[–] immuredanchorite@hexbear.net 3 points 48 minutes ago

Rent is also part of the US GDP calculation, so that 50% increase to your shitty studio apartment every year is really helping the economy!!! clueless

[–] jack@hexbear.net 10 points 1 hour ago

Maybe one day - not yet though, I'm sure.

After all, how could China have a bigger economy than the USA today? That would mean the USA isn't the world's largest economy, which we know it is, because it's America. But maybe one day it will be China... not yet though, I'm sure.

[–] FuckyWucky@hexbear.net 7 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

and America's (and the West's) GDP is mainly Services sector too which is difficult to measure. China mogs the U.S. wrt to manufacturing (eg. the $100k bill you paid at the hospital gets added to consumption, not the case with free healthcare).

and yea there are distributional issues too, both in the west and China. though, i have much greater hopes of China addressing it.

[–] CoolerOpposide@hexbear.net 37 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

A new virus with pandemic potential is rapidly spreading around American farms. I hear this one is from a weird American meat selling market where animals in the facility are kept trapped in small cages around feces all day, and sometimes even fed feces in some cases? Apparently the Americans believe this helps the animals grow faster and taste better? So barbaric

[–] hexbee@hexbear.net 16 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Do we get to call this one the amerikkka virus?

[–] AvocadoVapelung@hexbear.net 9 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

we have 2 options:

  1. waiting for some other country to count their cases so we can pin it on them

  2. scapegoating undocumented farm workers

[–] Redcuban1959@hexbear.net 21 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

HTS actually allowed a Christmas Tree. And it's actually a cool tree tbh

[–] Boise_Idaho@hexbear.net 4 points 9 minutes ago

You can reconcile this and them shooting bullet holes into icons of the Virgin Mary by saying that HTS is only tolerant towards German paganism.

[–] bbnh69420@hexbear.net 8 points 1 hour ago

Allowing trees some places and desecrating graves with crosses on them in others. Sounds like they don’t really have the control to crack down on it
