Namecheap has been fine for me so far. Avoid godaddy.

Give me a 100 word summary of the controversies surrounding GoDaddy and its founder.

GPT-4: GoDaddy, a popular web hosting service, and its founder Bob Parsons have been involved in several controversies. Criticism often targets GoDaddy's provocative advertising strategies, which some deem sexist. Parsons himself has faced backlash for his elephant hunting video in 2011, which many viewed as unethical and sparked a wave of customer boycotts. Additionally, GoDaddy's initial support for the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in 2011 provoked outrage for potentially threatening internet freedom, leading to a significant customer exodus until the company reversed its position.

I’ve been on namecheap for a long time. They have a sale going on now. But they are really good, hardly ever a problem and if there is, their customer service is stellar.

I have had a really good experience with Porkbun. You could also use Cloudflare. But since this is going to be work-related, Cloudflare all of the way.

I use namecheap -- I got my two most recent domains for less than $8 apiece -- but I hear good things about Google domains as well.

[-] Dark_Arc@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

Google sold their domains (and customers in the process to, I think it was square space)... Definitely just go with namecheap, they support the EFF, have a good website, and reasonable prices

[-] Noah@lemmy.federated.club 9 points 11 months ago

Cloudflare registrar or Porkbun are my goto's. Keep in mind that Cloudflare registrar currently requires you to use their (free) DNS service, you can't change the nameservers yet.

[-] jet@hackertalks.com 1 points 11 months ago

Cloudflare 100%

[-] Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 11 months ago

My main domain registrar is namecheap and my second for personal email is ionos. No issues thus far.

[-] Xylight@lemmy.xylight.dev 4 points 11 months ago

Cloudflare domains is decent but doesn't support many domains, porkbun is my next choice and I used to use Google domains.

[-] shortwavesurfer@monero.town 3 points 11 months ago

I use porkbun since they take crypto as payment

[-] darelik@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

Good to know. They didn't accept an mc gift card

[-] PineapplePartisan@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

I just used google, but you can use pretty much any big service (they are all priced similarly) if you are worried about scamminess. I also didn’t feel like being harassed for “website builders” or the other crap smaller providers try to sell.

I have one (including hosting) at a local German provider and one (dynamic DNS based forwarding to my homelab) at another German provider.

Both are in the market for 20+ years and neither of them had any controversies or major issues.

[-] hahrbinjer@kbin.social 3 points 11 months ago

I use Google Domains, but I believe they're either getting rid of it or selling it off.

[-] Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 11 months ago

I may have misheard it but arent they already? I believe Linus anf Luke from LTT talked about it on the WAN show

[-] hahrbinjer@kbin.social 2 points 11 months ago

Not too sure-- I remember receiving emails for my accounts-- but I just checked domains and it's still up, allowing you to purchase more.

That will probably end like Stadia. One team in the works of producing a game while management is already deciding how to close down the project...

cough https://killedbygoogle.com/ and https://9to5google.com/2023/06/15/google-domains-squarespace/ * cough*
And yep Google Domains is on the guillotine. Better secure it quickly.

[-] LUHG_HANI@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

European folks try EUKhost. Been good for me the last few years.

[-] Arghblarg@lemmy.ca 2 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

joker.com is pretty good (despite the shady name).

Edit: purely dns registrars AFAIK, no hosting.

[-] Defenceplox@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

I personally do all my hosting with tsohost.

[-] floppy@rabbitea.rs 2 points 11 months ago

I used to use them, then they hiked my ultra cheap deal up by 700%, so screw them.

[-] AlmightySnoo@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

Haven't done it since a very long time ago so probably there are better players out there now, but Gandi or GoDaddy maybe? I'd lookup their reviews (especially the negative ones) on Trustpilot to see all the gotchas.

[-] silentdon@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

Definitely not GoDaddy

[-] Radium@sh.itjust.works 2 points 11 months ago

Name.com is great! They’re local to my area and have always been fantastic to deal with. I’ve used godaddy, Google, name cheap and wouldn’t recommend any of them

[-] thelastknowngod@lemm.ee 1 points 11 months ago

Same. Been using them for years and they've always been solid.

[-] wesker@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 11 months ago

For personal domain registrar I use Hostpoint, because Swiss privacy.

If it's for work, AWS Route 53.

[-] orientalsniper@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

Namecheap and Namesilo are both good.

[-] orangeNgreen@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

Godaddy is the big one that I’ve heard of.

Disclaimer: I’ve never registered or managed a domain. I just remember their commercials from back in the day.

[-] housepanther@lemmy.goblackcat.com 16 points 11 months ago

Please don't use GoDaddy. They're scum of the earth.

[-] orangeNgreen@lemmy.world 7 points 11 months ago

Hah, oops. HousePanther likely knows more than me. Heed their warning!

[-] housepanther@lemmy.goblackcat.com 9 points 11 months ago

I've had domains stolen out from under me by GoDaddy. Fuck those guys! But seriously, I don't blame you for not knowing.

[-] Poggervania@kbin.social 1 points 11 months ago

Tell me you haven’t used Network Solutions without telling me you haven’t used Network Solutions :p

[-] housepanther@lemmy.goblackcat.com 4 points 11 months ago

Network Solutions!? What a godawful company they were to deal with back in the day. Loved it when their monopoly over domain name registration was cancelled.

[-] Poggervania@kbin.social 1 points 11 months ago

Oh, they’re still a bitch today. Been in the process of moving my work’s domains off of them over to Porkbun for cost-savings and the peace-of-mind of not having to deal with them.

Like, they apparently switched from offering more expensive Windows webhosting over to cheaper Unix webhosting - but because we signed up for the Windows servers for webhosting, they’ve been charging the company $175 a month for the past couple of years and never bothered to tell anybody about it until I recently asked about it and demanded that they lower the cost they’ve been charging us because they can’t do refunds :) Also they nickel-and-dime the shit outta their customers - like WHOIS privacy is $13 a year per domain with Network Solutions while it’s free on others, including GoDaddy.

GoDaddy might be shit, but I sincerely hope every single person who works at Network Solutions will get fucked by a rake.

[-] housepanther@lemmy.goblackcat.com 1 points 11 months ago

A sharp metal garden rake to boot. Stripping Network Solutions of its monopoly was one of the best decisions ICANN made.

[-] bernieecclestoned@sh.itjust.works 1 points 11 months ago

Lol, thanks anyway dude
