Oh because they probably evolved from needing a place to keep writing tools. It's just 1700s bourgeois decadence.
Old fashioned pens need to be held at a downwards angle or they might not write. A lot of modern pens as well. Plus it looks nice and it's basically just a block of wood with a hole and some polish.
So anyway I showed Jim from accounting the new 'stand and his poor ass was floored I'm in the corner office now

I bet you could throw a design together in tinkercad and get one 3d printed pretty cheaply
I dont think it would hold very well and the ink would dry out
