All of these cable companies are moving to more streaming-like services right down to the equipment that they use. My dad has never really wanted to learn how to use streaming services so we still ~~have~~ had a OG cable box. The company forced an upgrade to their newer hardware and the controller that comes with it is fucking terrible for accessibility. Flat small buttons. What genius thought that it'd be a good idea to force their customer base that have held onto traditional cable, which is likely older in age, onto hardware like this? There's no viable alternative option and because the controller is bluetooth since its a streaming box and all of the universal options that I've seen that work via bluetooth also have small buttons. I might just have to see if I could find some buttons that can stick on so that they're easier to press.

Latest Radio War Nerd has an exerpt from Wilbur Crane Evelyn's memoir Ropes of Sand where he meets Nasser and simps his ass off. It hasn't been fashionable to talk about another man that way since before the invention of the storm lantern.

Shootin' Ropes of Sand
An American on Xiaohongshu asked what people thought about Palestine and some Ukrainian started talking about he'd never support "Hamas terrorists" and when someone in Beijing said that they thought a Ukrainian would be more understanding, since, isn't Russia comparable to Israel here (their words, not mine), and he said that they should accept peace offers and not fight to the death, and when someone asked about Ukraine accepting a peace offers he said they should keep their 1991 borders and shouldn't have to give up land for peace.
Then someone from Xinjiang told him that this is why they support Russia and Ukraine deserves it.
I love XHS.
Incredible mental gymnastics.
Calling out my 8-year-old labrador retriever for her repeated attempts at emotional manipulation.
When we come home from a walk, I give her a treat and usually go upstairs to my room. Every time I do that, she'll look at me like "why are you leaving me? i don't wanna be alone, pls stay here"
But here's the thing: She's allowed to go upstairs and she knows that. It's not like she's scared of the stairs either, sometimes she'll nap in my sister's room which is right next to mine. She prefers to be downstairs but she could absolutely just follow me if she didn't wanna be alone, instead she tries to guilt me into staying downstairs with her. Her deviousness cannot be overstated.
What are the ethics of violence against inanimate objects? Like kicking a cardboard box for example.
I'm glad everyone is happy with their new video app and everything but is anything else going on?
it is january 15 and stalin saved the world from fascism
Been getting thru the ballad of gay tony, finished lost and damn few days before. Honestly wanted to do both before I get thru gta 4 but gay tony have been the better cleanser for it all. I still have a lot of love for GTA 4 but with how depressing it gets idk
Been working through the mainline 3D GTAs to play RDR and RDR2 with the context of what they built on, haven't played 4 yet but that's next on the list (taking a Resident Evil 1 Remake detour). I know 4 is supposed to be depressing but it sounds cool that Gay Tony is a good uplifting note.
Damn Rednote's algorithm must really like communist stuff cuz the two posts I've made on my brand new account already have over 100 and 50 likes respectively. You would not see that in Insta on a new account.
How do us hexbears think about guilt-based societies vs shame-based societies? I got into a friendly debate about it with a friend, let’s call him Bob.
I was claiming guilt-based societies are better because the logic should be people should always have the conscience of what they do is fair, and shame cultures also lead to conformity as shame is essentially what determines what’s “cringe”. My logic being that the LGBT movement is all about whether or not something is ‘embarrassing’ is irrelevant, whether or not something is actually fair/unfair should determine its ‘goodness’.
I also pointed out I prefer guilt-based societies because I’m skeptical of encouraging panopticon like shenanigans especially with the way technology is going that shame-based societies might encourage people to seek out each other’s “embarrassing” acts and be rewarded for catching them.
Then Bob said something that blew my mind, because I think it’s a good point and I had a hard time finding fault. He stated he would prefer a shame-based society as a means of stopping immoral acts.
His case was that the rise in fascism hypocritically uses liberalism’s “be yourself” message and twists it to its own end so fascists literally are telling white men “be yourself, give into every last intrusive thought you have. You’re better than everyone and having a free pass to treat others horribly is your reward!” similarly he pointed out that actually bad people know what they’re doing is wrong, but do it anyway for the thrill of doing something wrong. His last point was that shame-based societies encourage self-denial and sometimes even the rich can be affected by it, like a pork being embarrassed if an employee shows up to a food bank in uniform. Sure, that rich asshole is an unapologetic pig, but if society had a sense of shame porky might be willing to hire more people or be more fair to avoid embarrassment.
What do y’all think? It was a pretty good conversation and I’m not asking anyone to fight my battles (this is a good faith debate) but I just thought that the conversation was interesting and I liked Bob’s points.
When you say guilt or shame based societies is the implication that these are the only two options for some reason or was that just the way the conversation was framed?
I can't say I've ever considered a society to be 'based on' how undesirable acts are perceived by the general public and I'm curious how the idea arose in the first place
Yeah I've heard a lot of these sociological concepts but it all feels like astrology to me. I live in a Catholic country so obviously I assume that a "guilt" society is something close to what I'm familiar with, but I struggle to see what big difference there is between that and a "shame" based society. If I feel guilty about something I'd also feel ashamed of the same thing, I don't really see a big difference between them.
From what I'm gathering it seems as though a guilt based society puts the onus on the perpetrator to feel bad about doing immoral acts whereas in a shame society its the rest of society making the perpetrator feel bad by calling them out.
I'm not sure if this is accurate
Right, but it still seems a bit off because how should the members of society know what to feel guilty about if they aren't shamed for it, and how should people know when it's appropriate to shame others unless they have a corresponding expectation of what they'd feel guilty of committing themselves? It's all dialectical anyway, both of these will always be present and in contradiction. Maybe you could argue that in some societies either is dominant but I just find it a bit weird to discuss this as if it was the foundation on which morality is built.

My concerns are basically the same. It seems like something based on an expectation that humans will always act in a certain way under certain situations and i do not think that's true at all
I was curious how little red book was doing on the UK play store. I just took this screenshot, shit is at number 1 lmao. heard in the comments on red book this is also true in Canada and other western countries too
the westoid craves middle class Chinese shitposts and cooking videos. get ready to learn Chinese buddy
Hello megathread comrades. Today I'm in Changsha! Ngl it's pretty great seeing such a large part of all ads being posters from the CPC (mostly about the 12 core Socialist values). The city itself is rather modern-looking, with most buildings being somewhat new; there is quite a lot of construction going on, especially in the more commercial-feeling centre where what seems like old apartment blocks are being torn down. The skyline is already fairly busy, and the skyscrapers all light up at night in a synchronous display, which you can see from Orange Island (which also has a giant Mao head). There also seems to be more streetfood than in Xi'an, which I have mixed feelings about; but what I did sit down to eat was fantastic! Also I highly recommend the Hunan museum if any of you ever go to Changsha, it has a very large collection of varied artifacts from the province's entire history.
Yesterday I visited Mao's hometown of Shaoshan, it's less than 30 minutes away from Changsha by HSR which is very convenient. A lot of Chinese tourists were (pleasantly) surprised that a 外国人 would visit there lol. I put some flowers at the Mao statue with an older Chinese comrade I met that day, which was more of an experience than I would've thought.
Changsha skyline, big Mao head
Thanks again for the pictures!
These are fantastic photos! The Mao head is so dramatic against the night sky
Why am I more tired now than when I went to bed?
I had a dreadful amount of sinus drainage while sleeping last night and feel like I swallowed pool water or something -_- luckily I’m off lol
Oof, sorry to hear that comrade. I have work today, but thankfully coffee revived me
Drinking some now
Good luck at work hope it goes quick!
Thanks! Halfway through so it should be smooth sailing from here.
My opinion is a fact
if you breathe too many times you'll inhale too much air and explode your lungs
thats why you gotta fart to keep homeostasis
Reposting recent cat pics because I'm desperate positive attention
As they say, everything happens for a reason, but sometimes the "reason" is that you're incompetent and made a bad decision.
If i consider taking off work the night before, there is no way I'm going to work the next day
Even if whatever issue resolves itself my brain is too day off brained to force myself to commute an hour before 6 am
Living this right now. I decided i need a catch up day because of how poorly I've been sleeping and got a half decent sleep last night but I'm still in bed and already texted my boss i can't let my brain down like that
