a personal pet peeve is people always talking about how capitalism would be if it was "done right"

like, it's "done right" already, the purpose of it is not to create a society where people are treated fairly, without greed, shady practices or corruption

the purpose of capitalism is to make a number go up, its for a person to get richer, no matter the cost

honey you don't want a capitalism that's "done right", you want socialism

[–] Cimbazarov@hexbear.net 27 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think the issue is everyone has their own personal definition of what capitalism is. To some it just means free markets. For people really unaware, it just means the existence of money ( I think that's what that physicist YouTuber thought it was). The ambiguity is convenient for the exploiters because if you don't understand the system, you can't change it.

[–] vovchik_ilich@hexbear.net 16 points 1 day ago

Sabine Hossenfelder mentioned! Infamous video lmao. "Capitalism doesn't account for externalities, we just gotta regulate for those"

Also worth remembering the privilege it takes to enter a Costco - you need to buy their stupid membership card, and now scan it every time you enter. Never sat right with me.

[–] Acute_Engles@hexbear.net 44 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Can't even share one card between all your buddies anymore since the scanners show the picture of the card holder. Total shit

[–] CloutAtlas@hexbear.net 30 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Being in Blue Man Group costume 24/7:

Pros:

  • Saves on shampoo and conditioner

  • Being able to share a Costco member card

  • SPF 30+ so sun safe

  • Conversation starter

Cons:

  • Being blue (da ba dee da ba di)

  • Time spent doing paint could be used for posting

4 pros vs 2 cons, I rest my case.

[–] glimmer_twin@hexbear.net 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

SPF 30 isn’t sun safe where I live lol

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Just mix higher SPF sunscreen into the paint, ezpz. If it makes it too pale, then add in some blue pigment.

[–] William_Nilliam@hexbear.net 5 points 1 day ago

Skip the paint just put some blue dye in the sunscreen and slather it on

[–] SovietBeerTruckOperator@hexbear.net 25 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Idk I've been getting away with it

[–] Acute_Engles@hexbear.net 21 points 1 day ago

I tried with my dad's card and they stopped me last week. Far as I've heard my area was a testing location for the advanced scanners

It's a capitalist solution to a capitalist problem - the problem of accessing the wholesale pipeline. It's obviously not this anymore anyway, but that's what the membership is for. You're buying at the "convenience store" level, but without the volume that's what the membership makes up for. Using Costco as your distributer is still a thing in rural areas, esp in Washington. Last time I was near Mt. Rainer there was a convenience store in the town that was clearly breaking up Costco packs, but they were like 1 of 3 places you could actually buy stuff.

[–] sewer_rat_420@hexbear.net 20 points 1 day ago

You also generally need a car to shop there

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 47 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The fact that pro-capitalism content is now being churned out clearly sponsored by the big corps or thinktanks or whoever is pushing these things is a solidly good sign of the current fearful mindset going on among the capitalists.

[–] nohaybanda@hexbear.net 30 points 1 day ago

I would rather see a militant mindset going on among the workers. This is not a good thing

Costco Net Profit 2024: $7.4B

idk, thats a lot of theft if you ask me

[–] godlessworm@hexbear.net 6 points 1 day ago

nuuuu wholesome keanu hot dog!!!!! rotisserie chungus!!!!!

[–] merthyr1831@lemmy.ml 23 points 1 day ago

inb4 the entire video revolves around the CEO defending the use of hotdogs as a loss leader which is basic marketing for 90% of retail and fast food.

[–] blobjim@hexbear.net 16 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

buying in bulk costs less money, whoa!

If you buy directly from manufacturers you can get stuff way cheaper. Although in some cases Costco is probably the only way manufacturers let you buy in bulk.

Capitalism would be perfect if there was no middle man getting in between global south labor exploitation and my stomach.

[–] LaughingLion@hexbear.net 21 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What makes ya'll think Costco didn't just pay this youtuber for a fluff piece?

[–] godlessworm@hexbear.net 6 points 1 day ago

that channel is the costco guys official video essay channel where they take a critical look at costco's innerworkings from a center left wing perspective.

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 43 points 2 days ago

If they mastered Capitalism then why haven't other businesses followed their models and plans?

After all, Capitalism is supposed to be the best, most efficient system!

[–] blame@hexbear.net 39 points 1 day ago

oh are they sayign this because the founder got mad they wanted to raise the hotdog prices and said no

[–] Terrarium@hexbear.net 21 points 1 day ago

Without being greedy

Costco has the same profit onus of every other company it just uses a slightly different business model that means ita members get huge volumes of cheap goods. That's it.

It is exactly as greedy as every company anykne dislikes. The oppression of capitalism is not due to greed, it is a built-in mechanism that profits must be maximized. It doea not matter how highly a business owner or customers think of the company, it is a profit-generating machine or it will die.

Example: Costco always fights the union.

[–] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 24 points 1 day ago

Is that why teamsters have been gaining ground there?

[–] TankieTanuki@hexbear.net 37 points 2 days ago

Costco

We're Not Walmart!

[–] sewer_rat_420@hexbear.net 22 points 1 day ago

Are libs gonna be OK when the hot dog goes up to $2.00?

[–] CloutAtlas@hexbear.net 24 points 1 day ago

"Mastered Capitalism" or "Found a temporarily profitable niche"?

You(Tube) decide

[–] Future_Honkey@hexbear.net 27 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (3 children)

I seem to remember a similar (article not video) about costco a year or more ago. This vid bein posted so recently smellsa faff designed to push down strike news search results

[–] whatnots@hexbear.net 23 points 1 day ago

costco has been doing a lot of youtuber sponsorships lately as well. genuinely have been seeing their logo at least once everytime i open youtube. they're really trying to push a good image for sure and it definitely wouldn't be suprising if it was related to the strike.

[–] CloutAtlas@hexbear.net 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Was it Nick Mullen arguing that shopping at Costco is a catered event?

[–] TreadOnMe@hexbear.net 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Yup, and he argues that he should be able to just be there, chat with his friend, stand by a sample cart and eat samples without being accosted by strangers. While Stav said the proper 'fat' etiquette is to eat while making laps, thinking you are working off the calories. It's a funny bit.

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 9 points 1 day ago

Smellsa Faff. Is that the maiden name of Latka Gravas's mother?

[–] DavidGarcia@feddit.nl 20 points 1 day ago

Welcome to Costco, I love you

[–] marx_mentat@hexbear.net 11 points 1 day ago

No amount of praise or recognition is going to change the behavior of any other corporation.

[–] FortifiedAttack@hexbear.net 12 points 1 day ago

Their particular shareholders were pro DEI, so liberals are now doing free promotion for them.

[–] spectre@hexbear.net 10 points 2 days ago (4 children)

Costco is one of the least-worst private employers. I don't really see how it's "cope" and not just a click bait title that's a cheap shit at drawing attention to this video.

[–] FALGSConaut@hexbear.net 55 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Literally the only reason Costco workers get perks is the unionized stores. They give everyone the same benefits as the union stores as a tactic to discourage further unionization. I used to work for Costco and I have to say it sounded like an effective union busting tactic. I tried bringing up unionizing to some of my coworkers and the general response I got was "why bother? They already treat us pretty good"

[–] spectre@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago

Honestly didn't know they had union stores, so fair

[–] eldavi@lemmy.ml 42 points 2 days ago

they're least worst only because the unions force them to be a responsible employer.

with union busting people in charge of our government; i bet costco's reputation is about to get worse, but it won't matter since places like amazon are notoriously irresponsible employers, yet liberals happily buy from them anyways.

[–] CloutAtlas@hexbear.net 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's conditions are less shitty despite capitalism not due to "mastery" of capitalism. The premise was already flawed.
