Anyone got any show recommendations on CBC Gem? Bf and I just downloaded it but not really sure what's good yet.

We're fans of sci fi and fantasy if anything like that is available on it

(Edit: thanks for the recs folks!)

Check out β€œstation eleven” β€” a show set in a post-apocalyptic world but isn’t like any show you’ve ever watched in any genre. Only one season long and doesn’t end on a cliffhanger or anything, just a nice contained story

[–] MyBrainHurts@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 hours ago

I've started listing a few CBC gem shows I'd like to watch (though I don't really watch much tv so it may take me some time.) Anyway, from my list there are a couple that might fit the bill:

Britannia - Trailer

Penny Dreadful Trailer

Family Law is pretty good. Lawyer show, set in Vancouver, stars Jewel Staite.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 11 points 9 hours ago

Whoa...so all those pickups had flags that said FUND TRUDEAU?

Been watching a lot of news from multiple sources lately and the CBC coverage is SO GOOD compared to its US counterparts. Another amazing source I rely on every day is TVO. Steve Paiken is a god. The interviews and panels are like being in the company of adults after running a day care all day.

[–] MystikIncarnate@lemmy.ca 3 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

I mean ... Comparing anything to US News outlets is kind of setting the bar really low, isn't it?

[–] jerkface@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

They have outlets that are held out as more or less serious than others, but outside of PBS, it's all a mess of news, opinion, delusion, and propaganda.

PS: Oh, and drug advertisements for the domestic audience

[–] MapleEngineer@lemmy.world 12 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

The CBC is the only large news organization in Canada that isn't owned by foreign fascist placating billionaires and spreading anti-Canadian fascist propaganda. They can't control it so they want to kill it. Save the CBC.

Oh yeah?? okay it's not that big, but it spends wisely.

[–] smuuthbrane@sh.itjust.works 126 points 1 day ago (4 children)

For a few seconds there I was worried that this was the new F**K TRUDEAU and God help me I am so done with that shit.

But FUND the CBC? HELL YES.

[–] Pyr_Pressure@lemmy.ca 4 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

There was already someone on an overpass on Monday with a giant Fuck Mark Carney sign where I live.

[–] smuuthbrane@sh.itjust.works 6 points 9 hours ago

I'm going to call that just a touch premature.

As a neighbor down south, I read PP as planned parenthood. I know that's not the case but I looked at ddg for Canada pp and that's what I found. I'm really not trying to be dense but I would like clarification (because I'm a certified dumbass and don't get nuance or hints at times)

Thanks and I'm trying to understand!

[–] Thalfon@sh.itjust.works 23 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

Pierre Poilievre, leader of the conservative party and our version of a Trump wannabe.

[–] Snowpix@lemmy.ca 10 points 9 hours ago

Also known as "Milhouse" or "Spineless Coward"

[–] tpyo@lemmy.world 3 points 11 hours ago

Thank you, I appreciate the response

[–] smuuthbrane@sh.itjust.works 6 points 23 hours ago

Ok, you got me.

Thought the same thing, actually elated after reading the bottom text because it wasn't.

All the users coming here to complain about censoring swear words:

How did you get screenshots of my face as I opened this post???

[–] CircaV@lemmy.ca 42 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago) (1 children)

CBC are currently hiring 30 journalists across the country. I hope this means we wean ourselves off cheap US news and start investing in our own damn countries news, weather and culture. Given the US is repeatedly expressing their desire to violently annex us, investing in our own news seems like a no brainer. But also fuck the CPC who want to defund it and increase the flow of invader news media into Canada.

[–] lost_faith@lemmy.ca 12 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

The CPC in all its forms have hated the CBC because they point out what the parties are doing wrong/scandals. The CPC does not like light on their actions, they feel targeted

[–] CircaV@lemmy.ca 8 points 11 hours ago

The CPC are perfectly fine with foreign oligarch-owned, cheap US invader media and want more of it in Canada.

[–] Evkob@lemmy.ca 66 points 1 day ago

That's actually a pretty clever ad.

[–] Shadow@lemmy.ca 38 points 1 day ago

This is postered on a wall near me. I got really offended until I walked closer and saw the smaller text.

Good job whoever came up with it.

god I hate how neoliberals write stuff like this. The entire press release says nothing functional, except "the cbc is important" and then some easily fluffed assertions about what their plan 'would do'. It's really clearly written to avoid anything too committal.

[–] Thepotholeman@lemmy.ca 5 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

The CBC came out already saying they want to see their funding doubled so they can provide even more journalism and provide CBC gems ith no ads without the paid option.

[–] socialjusticewizard@sh.itjust.works 2 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

Sure, I'm all for increasing funding to the CBC. Just complaining about how neoliberals do everything. If the minister wants to increase funding to the CBC, say it in the press release. If she doesn't, say it. This cagey say-nothing fluff is bullshit and people should find it offensive.

[–] Thepotholeman@lemmy.ca 0 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

It had been said before.... Like a month ago. And how can they promise anything when parliament is prorouged? There's a limit to what the federal government can and cannot do without parliament right now.

Not everything is a "NeOLIbeRaLs" problem.

[–] socialjusticewizard@sh.itjust.works 2 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Then don't release a press release and a plan? Your comment doesn't make sense in context.

[–] Thepotholeman@lemmy.ca 1 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

It was what she wanted to SEE. Very clearly messaging towards people to not vote conservative aka the party that wants to completely dismantle it. Why are you getting so worked up over this lol

I'm not particularly worked up, I'm only responding because you're continuing to bring it up. My whole problem is that what she wants people to see doesn't actually tell anyone her plan. She has a plan, someone else posted her talking more openly about it. Her press release doesn't actually say what it is, just reassures people without making any even vague commitments. I find that irritating. Honestly I think you should too. It's one of the most transparent ways politicians try to avoid accountability.

[–] Banana@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 day ago

NDP always for me.

[–] Ceedoestrees@lemmy.world 10 points 22 hours ago

It's atrocious how US owned media has turned Canadians against a home-grown news organization. I'm not saying the CBC is perfect but they are important.
