Grooming is a heavily social behavior in rodents, so my guess is that it is used as a simple wellness check, to see how the choking party reacts and how severe the problem is

Tbf they do first aid every time I see one by boosting my moral.
That's a mouse though.
Rats usually can handle choking on their own. While they can't burp or vomit, they have super complex throat muscles and can slowly back up a blocker object to clear the airways. But it wouldn't surprise me if they also did first aid like the mice
