Everything to do with the USA's own Imperial Backyard. From hispanics to the originary peoples of the americas to the diasporas, South America to Central America, to the Caribbean to North America (yes, we're also there).

Post memes, art, articles, questions, anything you'd like as long as it's about Latin America. Try to tag your posts with the language used, check the tags used above for reference (and don't forget to put some lime and salt to it).

Here's a handy resource to understand some of the many, many colloquialisms we like to use across the region.

On this day in 1961, the Bay of Pigs invasion took place when a force of 1400 Cuban exiles, funded and led by the U.S., landed on the southwest coast of Cuba in a failed attempt at overthrowing the revolutionary Cuban government.

Covertly financed and directed by the U.S. government, the operation took place at the height of the Cold War and its failure led to major shifts in international relations between Cuba, the United States, and the Soviet Union.

The coup attempt came after the Cuban government expropriated property from American capitalists. U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower allocated $13.1 million to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in March 1960 for use against Castro's government. With the aid of Cuban counter-revolutionaries, the CIA proceeded to organize an invasion.

On April 14th, 1961, a squadron of U.S. B-26 bombers camouflaged with Cuban insignias begin a two-day bombing campaign of Cuban airports, destroying a large portion of the Cuban air force.

On the night of April 17th, an invasion force of approximately 1400 Cuban exiles and CIA officers landed on the beach at Playa Girón in the Bay of Pigs. After a few days, the insurgents became overwhelmed by the Cuban army. President Kennedy refused to provide air support for the operation.

The invasion's defeat solidified Castro's role as a national hero and strengthened Cuba-Soviet relations. Several Cuban exiles and two Americans were executed upon capture. Over 1,000 prisoners were exchanged for humanitarian aid from the U.S. government.

another Rimworld story

A lost tribe establishes itself in a valley
Their Chiftainess is a woman named Eagle
Eagle has high social and combat skills
Seems to ace everything she sets her mind to
Her sister is also in the tribe, Nano
Nano has very few skills
is poorly motivated, likes to stay in her room,
doesn't get on well with the rest of the tribe
gets an infected mad hare bite on her right leg
loses the fight with the infection, is forced to amputate
semi-conscious on the floor while her sister leads the tribe through a tough first winter
food is low, raiders are raiding, wood is scarce
but Eagle cannot be beat in personal combat
She saves the tribe, saves refugees, and saves a wealthy knight
Knight gifts her high tech armor for helping him
tribe pulls through their first year, Nano gets a peg leg at the start of spring
eventually, she even gets a bedroll

Nano can't move too well, Eagle assigns her a new work schedule
Keep the longhouse clean, refill the lanterns, train the animals
Eagle also promotes her sister to "tribe stylist" in an attempt to improve her mood
Nano grumbles a lot, but doesn't slack off
Food poisoning stops happening as the kitchens are cleaner than ever
Nano trains the tribe's dogs to haul and rescue
She also gets really, really good at Ur. She never liked hoopstone much anyway
Things stabilize for a year, despite constantly-low food stocks
Eagle establishes relations with neighboring clans and builds monuments to please them
No, she doesn't tell others to do it, she does it herself because she is the best and fastest builder by far
Shamblers appear and attack the tribe, only to be instantly smote by her prowess with the bow
Eagle makes her own greatbow, and it is the finest weapon the tribe has ever seen
She then goes on to make four more and equip everyone with them

Monsoon season year two, Eagle and Nano both get malaria
For Nano, this is just one more bad day in a life full of bad days
For Eagle, it's the first time she's ever faced an opponent she can't defeat
Nano rises after her own fever breaks, and goes to her sister's room
The best and most desperate efforts of the tribe's doctor have failed
Eagle is mere hours from death
her mind is gone, only her body remains.
There is only one thing left to do
Gently, Nano takes her sister's armor and weapons off of her
She leaves the room with them, placing them in storage
She is the last one to see Eagle alive

After Eagle is buried, Nano stands by her grave for much longer than the rest
The mood in camp is somber. Everyone is moving slowly.
After the difficulties of last winter, expectations are low for the future
Nano walks to the tribe's ritual spot, beneath a monument her sister built
She calls the rest of the tribe to her
When they arrive, they notice something unexpected
Nano speaks of life and death and loss
It's a eulogy for her sister
But also a declaration
She is wearing her sister's armor
Carrying the tribe's ceremonial jade knife
No-one objects. Perhaps none of them want the job.
Or perhaps they all assume that Nano won't have it for long.

five years have passed
the tribe has tripled in size
its farms extend in all directions
its granaries overflow with food
a herd of sheep wander its lands
fresh wool and cotton girds all of the tribe's members
in one part of their territory, their leader stands
at the end of an old weather-worn path
her wooden leg sinking into the mud
"most of the tribe don't know you anymore" she says
the grave doesn't reply
"it will be the same with me.
you were what they needed then,
and in the future they will need another."

Bracing myself for what might be a difficult convo in a little while where I'll be on the receiving end of some tough feedback...hope it goes okay and I can just vibe to Kiwawa's Easter concert after but my heart rate's already starting to climb bocchi-glitch

Deep breaths, deep breaths...honestly, I wish I could just move to a cabin in the woods where I could commune with nature and work on my little projects. But, like it or not, I'm stuck with civilization for the foreseeable future, so I have to relearn how to get along with people.

edit:

edit edit: everything went better than expected doggirl-thumbsup honestly can't believe there are people in this world still willing to put up with my bullshit after all these years but I cherish them for it

Every bad analysis is usually just a recap of what happened with very little analysis, gonna do it justice by not even describing what I'm talking about and do the analysis bit instead. It'll be up to the reader to find and consume the material I'm breaking down.

browsing medical jobs, see "inspection"

blob-no-thoughts "Oh, like a regular doctor's checkup? I should schedule that on all my pawns."

doctor pawn proceeds to vivisect every single member of his tribe

the horror of what he's just done causes a mental break

he burns down the village and runs away

apparently you're intended to use that surgery on people who get infected or mutated by the new eldritch horrors that they added to the game

ugh anytime i try to talk to reconnect with old friends or make new ones at an attempt at being social again it always hits me like a brick in the face that most people are insufferable at best and actively harmful at worst.. trying so hard to heal my misanthropy but it's not easy

I mean it’s not like this stat surprises me coming from the west, but it looks like white men ages 18-22 voted for Trump at the same rate as boomer white men.

Utterly hopeless, but I guess more makes sense

The neoliberals refusing to do anything about unchecked fascist rhetoric has basically guaranteed an entire generation of Andrew Tate worshippers.

And before anyone says it:

neoliberals
fascists

All the social functions of the capitalist are now performed by salaried employees. The capitalist has no further social function than that of pocketing dividends, tearing off coupons, and gambling on the Stock Exchange, where the different capitalists despoil one another of their capital.

My wr on majsoul is good enough that I could get to master eventually, but I don't have the time to play so many hands to get there. Idk if this is cope. I could get there faster if I read theory and do drills, but it's dry. Will eventually have to if/when I plateau

What's the best one-volume collection of Lenin's most important writings that doesn't cost a fortune?

Most of his books are like 100 pages I feel like there should be more of these, like that 800ish page Marx Engels reader from the 70s printed on super thin paper.

There's one that's around 500 pages but cuts stuff like prefaces and the last chapter of What Is To Be Done, I don't want that

Got a 3 day weekend cause closed for Easter and used my bonus day to snuggle with my cat and rewatch Zeta Gundam. I haven't cut my hair in a bit and noticed if I let my hair grow out a bit more and dye the roots I will look like my profile pic

Woke up after 4 hours of sleep to an incredibly loud crash sound from our dog knocking over a card table, heart pounding so hard I thought I was gonna have a heart attack. Then my partner told me that the part of the day I was looking forward to is no longer happening, because the part I'm not looking forward to was rescheduled morning-of and the good part had to be canceled.

pain

oh boy it just got even better, this event I don't want to go to is at a stranger's house, and it's 30 minutes earlier than she said it was so I have to leave immediately

agony-consuming
