So what you're saying is, clear out all of your documents and replace it with the most garbage fanfic gibberish you can find.

Hey everyone, I know it's going to be a busy day for a lot of people, but Google enrolled everyone over 18 into their AI program automatically.

If you have a google account, first go to https://gemini.google.com/extensions and turn everything off.

Then you need to go to https://myactivity.google.com/product/gemini and turn off all Gemini activity tracking. You do have to do them in that order to make sure it works.

Honestly, I'm not sure how long this will last, but this should keep Gemini off your projects for a bit.

I saw this over on bluesky and figured it would be good to spread on here. It only takes a few minutes to do.

Edit: links now work again

Thanks for that! I had most disabled, but missed one switch, or they just added it and made it on by default. Pesky bitches.

[–] real_squids@sopuli.xyz 9 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

It's off for me by default, not sure why

[–] DacoTaco@lemmy.world 7 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Is your location in google somewhere in europe?

[–] real_squids@sopuli.xyz 5 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago) (1 children)

UK I think, although after checking from a pc, google flights, hotels, and maps were enabled instead of greyed out like on mobile

[–] DacoTaco@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago

Might be a european thing, i need to check on my end

[–] sawdustprophet@midwest.social 9 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

And the links no longer work.

Your second link will work if you remove the space before "gemini". I just used it and it worked fine.

[–] CosmicTurtle0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 21 hours ago

Thanks! Fixed

Is this a US thing? I tried to go to the /extensions subpage but I get routed to the main page every time.

[–] ColeSloth@discuss.tchncs.de 16 points 22 hours ago

It's likely changed by now or they canceled the roll out. All this happened several months ago. Including push back of pissed people and that a lot of ai stuff hasn't worked all that reliably.

[–] ultrahamster64@lemmy.world 41 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Probably testing in us to roll out to everyone else later

I’m covered by gdpr but it was active. Links maybe fixed?

[–] apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago (1 children)

In the US, I didn't see an extensions page either.

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 8 points 23 hours ago

possibly a staged rollout

[–] subtext@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

The picture shows Jan 20th, so it may have all been changed since this was posted

[–] Catoblepas@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Are you logged in to your Google account? It works for me when I’m logged in, but otherwise redirects.

[–] theit8514@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Using a normal Google account it has a bunch of checkmarks on https://gemini.google.com/u/1/apps but this is not available on my Workspace account.

[–] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 3 points 20 hours ago

Yeah same here. My Google. Apps / g suite / workspace / whatever you call it doesn't allow it to turn off.

[–] ddash@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 17 hours ago

I am, I even used Chrome to go to that page.

[–] DarkCloud@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

You should have been rerouted to a /apps subpage asking what apps you wanted to use Gemini in.

[–] Sat@lemmynsfw.com 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

It shows extensions for me but it's all off. I did not change anything.

[–] Metz@lemmy.world 37 points 1 day ago (2 children)

There is exactly zero chance this shit will fly in the EU.

[–] ChairmanMeow@programming.dev 10 points 11 hours ago

EU customers are opted out by default.

[–] LadyMeow@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 1 day ago

Uuuugghhghh. Must degoogle… faster!

[–] LostWanderer@lemmynsfw.com 23 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I already had everything turned off anyway...Turns out past me made sure that Gemini couldn't invade my life!

[–] Mist101@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Same! Already got fed up with google awhile back and turned everything off. Next goal is to completely de-google.

[–] LostWanderer@lemmynsfw.com 8 points 23 hours ago

I want to, but there are critical accounts that won't let me change the associated email (or an account that would require my former employer to change, ROFL). I'm happy you can de-Google.

[–] Matriks404@lemmy.world 0 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

What does that even mean? Did they integrate Gemini to all their core products?

That said, I use Gemini occasionally, and it seems useful to me, although I still take the information it generates with caution, and I prefer to read documentation for whatever I want to do, because I don't want to blindly follow what LLM's generate (that's just asking for problems).

Thanks, fyi for me I had to go to: https://gemini.google.com/apps for the first link.

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Important safety tip.

Thanks, Ray.

[–] TexasDrunk@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

I guess they learned nothing from Google Buzz.

[–] Aarrodri@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Thanks. I just turned it all off.
