The votes are genuinely rigged in favor of Israel and Israel has been very upfront about this

Here is a short-ish but good video about all the ways the event was used to promote genocide last year, by the way.

When they rewrote history about why Russia was banned I remember MSM reporting it uncritically and took many points emotional damage

I found a YouTube link in your comment. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:

The "european people":

[–] Llituro@hexbear.net 51 points 1 month ago (5 children)

don't they go out of their way to manipulate that vote? i remember this being a thing last times the euros were doing their vision

[–] moondog@hexbear.net 45 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah they're breaking like 10 different rules to get their candidate to win. The only places Israel performed poorly in is the countries where you need to show your ID card to get a sim card.

[–] Seasonal_Peace@hexbear.net 17 points 1 month ago

That’s true for Austria. Austria is extremely pro-Israel, partly because many Austrians, deep down, are still proud Nazi. Still, Israel only got 7 points, not 10 or 12 like it did from Spain or Ireland.

[–] XiaCobolt@hexbear.net 35 points 1 month ago

Their government pays for phone credit to Israelis in different countries to vote unlimited times. They usually get a midling jury vote then a huge number of phone votes.

[–] Sinisterium@hexbear.net 31 points 1 month ago

Its very easy to cheat. There isnt really an enforceable restriction against "one person = one vote". Pro-Palestinian people were also boycotting eurovision.

[–] Horse@lemmygrad.ml 13 points 1 month ago

yeah, the "israelis" are famous for gaming the vote, even more than the usual

[–] plinky@hexbear.net 11 points 1 month ago (4 children)

the evidence of that being "europeans simply can't be that racist"

[–] Llituro@hexbear.net 25 points 1 month ago

the evidence being that they don't even try to hide stuffing the ballot box

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

They literally brag about it, they advertise it.

[–] Horse@lemmygrad.ml 12 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

no, they are very well known for manipulating the vote, have been for years

[–] XiaCobolt@hexbear.net 3 points 1 month ago

To be fair most Europeans are still pretty antisemitic as well as racist.

There's reasons why no one went to Israel when they hosted Eurovision, and solidarity with Palestine wasn't it for most of them.

[–] NuraShiny@hexbear.net 49 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Stop caring about this farce of a competition please.

[–] eyyImwalkin@hexbear.net 21 points 1 month ago (1 children)

ok but the point still stands tho lmayo

[–] NuraShiny@hexbear.net 1 points 1 month ago

Yes. I can still implore you to not give a fuck tho.

Israel isn't even in Europe for chrissakes...

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 31 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's a European/Amerikkkan colony though

[–] lil_tank@hexbear.net 33 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The fact that they participate is kind of a gotcha when zionists claim it's not a white colony he-admit-it

[–] XiaCobolt@hexbear.net 10 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Lebanon was set to compete in 2005 but withdrew because of the backlash of competing alongside Israel.

Tunisa and Morroco can compete outright but don't. Jordan, Egypt, Libya and Algeria could compete without requiring invitation if they joined the EBU.

Technically Iran could compete as they are an affiliate but Eurovision would never invite them (and Iran would never accept competing with Israel)

[–] lil_tank@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Okay I didn't expect they would actually commit to include periphery countries my bad

[–] reaper_cushions@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago

Neither is Azerbaijan.

[–] XiaCobolt@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Or Australia.

It's not like it's a binding international organization like NATO or the EU. It's a private business with Network members and affiliates thing. Technically had Libya joined the EBU they would have had to let them compete (missed funny timeline with Gaddafi picking the group). China could have competed but it was unlikely.

[–] Blakey@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

s/picking/joining and personally leading

[–] XiaCobolt@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago

The 12 points from Yugoslavia goes to...Libya!

Estonia had a fun song

When Israel hosted Eurovision it was a massive failure they had like 10% the guests of European ones.

They should be removed in the way Russia was but cowards etc.

[–] Boynomoder@hexbear.net 30 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I feel like countries should be banned from stuff like Eurovision and the Olympics if they are at war. (Let alone committing genocide like Israel)

[–] XiaCobolt@hexbear.net 18 points 1 month ago

Yeah one of the favourites last year Joost from the Netherlands said that and an Israeli journalist who was harassing him falsely accused him of physical assault. Getting him kicked out of the finale even though all charges were eventually dropped.

Lmao it would be fun to never seen US at the olympics.

Estonia had a fun song

I will always support making fun of Italians and their funny ways.

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 30 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Oof. Looks like loud empty posturing about "supporting Ukraine" isn't in vogue anymore.

[–] XiaCobolt@hexbear.net 25 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I mean last yeah they had a contestant whose stage name was "Jerry Heil" who wore a Stephan Bandera shirt in promotions, I think many Europeans are getting tired of them being openly Nazis (instead of quietly Nazis like the rest of them).

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago

Yeah, I guess it is a bit too scandalous to talk about at brunch the next day.

Nice of them to admit that Isntreal is a European settler colony and definitely not indigenous to the Middle East like hasbarists like to claim

[–] Boynomoder@hexbear.net 14 points 1 month ago

Estonia was robbed

[–] Talia@feddit.it 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Just to add fuel, "popular vote" is not only from Europe nor the contestant countries but from all of the world too, and it also gave maximum points to Israel

[–] merthyr1831@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 month ago

They allow 20 votes per person, on an unverified app instead of texts.

Oh, and voting opened before any of the fucking acts had performed.

Unserious propaganda is the most infuriating to me

[–] merthyr1831@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 month ago

"New day will rise" is definitely dogwhistle-y
