Dawid is a tech youtuber that usually reviews random hardware and techy things, and he just made a video about his experience switching to Linux.

TL;DR: He liked it and will keep Bazzite on his personal computer.

So, Alex, a guy who speaks fluent grep, tried using Windows for work. It was a catastrophe. I think he tried to pipe a command in the search bar and then spent the next hour trying to figure out why Cortana was telling him the weather. He's back on Linux. The machine has been wiped. We don't talk about it.

Given that, in the videos of his I've watched (hasn't been many at this point) he's seemed pretty technically competent ... It's surprising he was unfamiliar with CSV.

No shade, we all have lapses in our knowledge, but that one did come as a surprise.

He's probably more familiar with .xlsx, at least, that's what i'd assume.

I tried bazzite and I much much prefer nobara project

Bazzite works better as an appliance/ gaming PC.

But I still enjoy it more than Nobaro.

All those fancy sounding distros and here I am, with the ol' Debian.

I know a guy that has been running Debian Unstable since at least '98

I'm not using Cachy, just plain Arch. I was using Arch before gaming really took off with Proton. 😅 Loving it now though!

[–] n3m37h@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago

Heh, I was just joking m8, Yeah proton is a game changer.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Why is that?

Its not locked down like Bazzite, so if ya need to do something to the OS, you can

[–] Ghoelian@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 week ago

On bazzite, you also can. It just works a bit different because it's an atomic distro

With a little bit of tweaking I got Marvel Rivals running with a higher and more consistent framerate on Pop OS vs what I had on Windows.

This was also with an Nvidia card.

I haven't managed to get MR running with a similar performance, it's one of the few games that runs worse on my linux system. What tweaks have you made?

I am using an AMD Ryzen 5 3600 Processor and ASUS Dual GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super OC Edition 16GB.

In steam, I use GE-Proton10-10 for the compatibility tool and for the launch options I have: PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=0 SteamDeck=1 gamemoderun %command% -PSOCompileMode=1

I found the PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=0 part to be what made the difference for frame-rate.

I just tried it and my average FPS went down by 5. Oh well, thanks for the help anyway, it might be dependent on specific setups.

Do you have an AMD or other “high core count” CPU, by any chance? If so, you may need to use WINE_CPU_TOPOLOGY to ensure your CPU is being fully utilized. Without it, you could be using only a fraction of your CPUs available power.
