Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

Don't use TPB though. It's basically unmoderated and filled to the brim with garbage, viruses etc.

For ebooks use Anna's Archive or MAM. The latter is semi-private and requires you to pass a (relatively) trivial interview to enter.

ok but what if i want games?

[–] yetAnotherUser@discuss.tchncs.de 16 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Gaming is considerably more popular than ebooks so there isn't really The One Site™ you would visit.

But you should absolutely avoid TPB for software like a plague. That's where all the malware is.

Now, I don't know what the rules of this instance are but I don't think there is anything wrong with linking a Microsoft Github project with 6600 stars, is there? Perhaps you will find your answer there.

oh well, i've used TPB a bunch for games lol, never had a noticeable issue thankfully (i do use linux, and most malware is for windows so i guess i'm a little safer, but of course never 100%)

and i don't really see how films/books/etc could have malware in them, since most apps have security features to account for that, as far as i know (more specifically mpv and vlc, which are the ones i use more)

I'd be wary of PDFs too since that format is way too large for what it should do. I mean, you can literally put JavaScript inside PDFs. There's a reason hardly any other file format has its own "Security" section on Wikipedia.

Also, be very much careful with running Windows software on Linux. Running Windows malware through WINE can infect your Linux system. Basic ransomware especially is the biggest worry - some sophisticated rootkit which attempts to embed itself into Windows drivers will probably not work through WINE.

I'm in the same boat, and I hope you take some precautions. Although at least on Linux you can open htop, filter for 'C:\' and see everything related to wine. I have found malware running like this before (here's a link to a .zip that contains everything that was in the sus directory, includes xcopy, some networking app with a 90s logo, and something called winRing0 😬)

when i'm able to use my pc again i'll get a VM and open that to see it, thanks!

oh and i will reinstall my OS too, so if you have any suggestions i'll accept anything (i was thinking about arch but i heard the AUR has been having a malware issue, and i only use arch for the aur so i guess i'll try something else)

[–] abbotsbury@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

AUR is completely optional, if you use Arch (or an Arch-derived distro) you can stick with just official packages from pacman. I use Endeavour OS (Arch based) and the default manager for AUR tells you before installing if the thing you want is from AUR, along with some other details.

But sometimes AUR is your only option, but there are some basic steps to take to ward off 99% of malware attempts. The Arch Wiki page on the AUR goes over how to not use a package manager and how to build one from scratch, the important part is the red warning about PKGBUILD and .install files, because that is what your computer will actually be running. But generally, if the AUR package is cloning the official git repo of the software in question, you should be gucci. Or skip the AUR entirely and use snaps/flatpaks if they're available because the downsides are either irrelevant or worth it for you.

Find and follow the individuals who actually put the effort into cracking games. Many have their own repository of mirrors and direct torrent links.

Just gotta stay in the loop of which sites are legitimate and which are copies. Haven't had access to a personal PC for nearly a year so I'm out of the loop on who all are still active.

[–] festnt@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

i haven't had a PC for 4 to 5 months! we're pcless bros!
but anyway do you know where i can find these people? i have no idea how to find anything or anyone like that

[–] Doc_Crankenstein@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 week ago

I'd say try the subs focused on pirating and ask around? I know FitGirl is trustworthy but don't know their current instances

I've noticed that when free ebook sources are provided, Z-Library is omitted even though it still works for me.

Did I miss something about it?

[–] yetAnotherUser@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Z-lib is fine - but Anna's Archive should have a superset of its content. After all, they claim:

We mirror Sci-Hub and LibGen. We scrape and open-source Z-Lib, DuXiu, and more.

[–] JadenSmith@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago

That's brilliant, and I certainly didn't know about that thanks! Will be giving that a go on my next book of choice.

idk ending up at Critical Thinking for Dummies still feels like kind of a bad ending

[–] HappyFrog@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 1 week ago

Why? Is it bad to want to better one self? Is critical thinking a bad thing?

[–] Doc_Crankenstein@slrpnk.net 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Everyone has to start somewhere. I'd never fault someone for attempting change, no matter how late they are to arriving at the decision to do so.

[–] sem@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 week ago

The dummies book are pretty well written too.
