Only every other car though, not all of them

[-] Ioughttamow@kbin.social 40 points 4 months ago

When the simulation is low on resources, it starts running cars with full tint so it doesn’t have to draw the npcs

[-] KISSmyOS@feddit.de 17 points 4 months ago

It reduces the driver AI setting for those cars, too.

...wait, this singleplayer game has been an MMORPG this whole time?

Uh-oh.

[-] Thcdenton@lemmy.world 11 points 4 months ago

I refuse to believe this and will continue farming them for XP.

[-] euphoric_cat@lemmy.blahaj.zone 14 points 4 months ago

yeah I'm gonna be using this word a lot

[-] juxta@reddthat.com 19 points 4 months ago

"Every other car" so only half the people driving are npc then? Thats far less then i thought. Thats pretty encouraging actually.

[-] blind3rdeye@lemm.ee 5 points 4 months ago

Nar nar. You've misunderstood. It's every other car is a person with life goals. It's nothing to do with drivers.

[-] LemmyKnowsBest@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

Every two cars

Half of the cars

Even those could be interpreted two different ways 😄

[-] gamermanh@lemmy.dbzer0.com 19 points 4 months ago

Judging by some of their driving I'm not so sure every car isn't an NPC on an overloaded CPU

[-] FilthyShrooms@lemmy.world 13 points 4 months ago

Not until you compare it with horror fact #2: half of the human population is dumber than the average person.

[-] lugal@lemmy.ml 16 points 4 months ago

I am not a native speaker so forgive this stupid question: does "every other" here mean "every second" as in "every other day" or "everyone except me" like I'm the only guy without a life?

[-] grue@lemmy.world 17 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

~~The latter.~~ Actually, wait, no: in this case it means "every" including you, but with an emphasis on those who are not you.

[-] IdiosyncraticIdiot@sh.itjust.works 7 points 4 months ago

It's ok, even as a native speaker I had to think through this same thing. I have come to the conclusion it is talking about "all the other drivers on the highway".

[-] moistclump@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago

Every other-car emphasis rather than every-other car.

[-] Bumblefumble@beehaw.org 3 points 4 months ago

It probably is supposed to mean the second, but it reads like the first. To make it actually properly read like the second it would be "all (the) other cars".

[-] ZagamTheVile@lemmy.world 16 points 4 months ago

Of the 8 billion people on the planet, there's only one that thinks you're the main character.

[-] KISSmyOS@feddit.de 16 points 4 months ago

There's actually 2! My mom and me 🥹

[-] greenhorn@lemm.ee 15 points 4 months ago

The cars are people?? BRB going to ask my person what their goals and destinations are, they might be different from mine and we need to have a serious heart to heart

[-] moistclump@lemmy.world 14 points 4 months ago

I started thinking about this as a kid and I still sometimes get an overflowing realization in a moment of traffic or walk. I got my pilots license a few years ago too and when I’d be up in the air and looking at all the tiny people, cars, homes. It just blew my mind. They’re all people with their own thoughts today and some are mundane and routine and some lives got turned upside down this week and some are happy and some are in chronic pain.

Man. People, ammirite?

[-] megopie@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 4 months ago

This is why we must destroy all cars.

[-] uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 4 months ago

My thought is, um, yeah? That's why we let them merge.

The freaky thing is drivers who criticize other drivers as if they can hear, or the other car AI can and cares.

[-] Daxtron2@startrek.website 7 points 4 months ago

I don't criticize them expecting them to hear it. I'm more confirming that the stupidity I'm seeing is actually happening and I'm not hallucinating it.

[-] grue@lemmy.world 9 points 4 months ago

Reminds me of this study from a few months back: Study Finds Cyclists Are Better People Than Drivers

[-] Toes@ani.social 8 points 4 months ago

Or, just maybe, you are a NPC for using a car?

[-] euphoric_cat@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 4 months ago

but I don't own a car 😇

[-] GregorTacTac@lemm.ee 12 points 4 months ago
[-] Johandea@feddit.nu 8 points 4 months ago

The walkway. Or bike path.

[-] alper_celik@lemmy.world 8 points 4 months ago
[-] TheRealLinga@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 months ago
[-] SendMePhotos@lemmy.world 8 points 4 months ago

Stop. They only have faces when you look.

[-] RIP_Cheems@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago

Fake fact, someone nearly hit my trying to change lanes and barely reacted when I blew the horn.

[-] lemmyknow 6 points 4 months ago

It seems one of those life goals are to drive 15 miles per hour lower than the speed limit in the passing lane, and not passing anyone. Every single time I take to the road.

[-] UnrepententProcrastinator@lemmy.ca 5 points 4 months ago

I usually do this mental thought when on the roads looking at houses thinking a whole family lives there with dreams, joys, tragedies, fascinating stories, etc.

I try to keep that mindset when meeting strangers, taking interest in that unknown world.

[-] samus12345@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

I do that too and am disappointed that I'll never know their life stories. I think it's a good thing I'm an introvert.

[-] Polyester6435@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 4 months ago
[-] riodoro1@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago

If so then they better get better at driving because they’re making me mad as hell.

[-] antidote101@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

That's what the experience of "sonder" is. It's that very realisation about everyone.

[-] Epzillon@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

I'm 100% sure I've seen video game AI drive better than at least 40% of people on the roads, no way they're not NPCs

[-] SmokumJoe@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

That's fine, just get the hell out of the passing lane if someone is coming up behind you.

[-] LemmyKnowsBest@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

ok but sometimes I feel like an NPC because that's how society treats me 😢

So rest assured, you truly are the fabulous important person you think you are, because there really are some cars on the road being driven by NPCs.

[-] KingThrillgore@lemmy.ml 2 points 4 months ago

Don't believe the meme about NPCs: people are people

[-] snekerpimp@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

This should be something taught by the DMV to get your license.
