/c/TenFoward: Your home-away-from-home for all things Star Trek!

Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

~ 8. No Political Upheaval. Political commentary is allowed, but please keep discussions civil. Read here for our community's expectations.

Fun will now commence.

Should be "well, I will have been."

[–] charonn0@startrek.website 48 points 9 months ago (2 children)

This is hardly the time to be conjugating temporal verbs in the past-impossible-never tense!

[–] jonc211@programming.dev 5 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Where’s Dan Streetmentioner when you need him?

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago (1 children)

"Anything that happens, happens. Anything that, in happening, causes something else to happen, causes something else to happen. Anything that, in happening, causes itself to happen again, happens again. It doesn't necessarily do it in chronological order, though."

(Yes, I know that's from a different book in the series.)

Was ist, ist

Was nicht ist, ist möglich

Nur was nicht ist, ist möglich

I would never! unless you were already having been going to do that! and, in latin, there’s a tense for that: future imperfect (for referring to things that might have been)!

One of the major problems encountered in time travel is not that of becoming your own father or mother. There is no problem in becoming your own father or mother that a broad-minded and well-adjusted family can't cope with. There is no problem with changing the course of history—the course of history does not change because it all fits together like a jigsaw. All the important changes have happened before the things they were supposed to change and it all sorts itself out in the end.

The major problem is simply one of grammar, and the main work to consult in this matter is Dr. Dan Streetmentioner's Time Traveler's Handbook of 1001 Tense Formations. It will tell you, for instance, how to describe something that was about to happen to you in the past before you avoided it by time-jumping forward two days in order to avoid it. The event will be descibed differently according to whether you are talking about it from the standpoint of your own natural time, from a time in the further future, or a time in the further past and is futher complicated by the possibility of conducting conversations while you are actually traveling from one time to another with the intention of becoming your own mother or father.

Most readers get as far as the Future Semiconditionally Modified Subinverted Plagal Past Subjunctive Intentional before giving up; and in fact in later aditions of the book all pages beyond this point have been left blank to save on printing costs.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy skips lightly over this tangle of academic abstraction, pausing only to note that the term "Future Perfect" has been abandoned since it was discovered not to be

[–] theodewere@kbin.social 5 points 9 months ago

the future is flawed and everyone's tense

Why yes, I am going to make you go down a TV Tropes rabbit hole for hours.

No need to "fuck you" me, you're welcome.

"Time travel. Since my first day on the job as a Starfleet captain I swore I'd never let myself get caught in one of these godforsaken paradoxes - the future is the past, the past is the future, it all gives me a headache." ~Captain Janeway

[–] NaibofTabr@infosec.pub 4 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I hate temporal mechanics.

[–] swab148@startrek.website 5 points 9 months ago

They're coarse and irritating, and they get everywhere!

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 31 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (1 children)

Just for that, O'Brien...

You could have met Mark Twain, Miles. You fucked up.

Edit: So did imgflip.

[–] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 2 points 9 months ago

If there's any Twainin' to be done, O'Brien should be there for it

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 27 points 9 months ago (2 children)

Riker: "Oh yeah, well I'll be in Enterprise."

O'Brian: "What's Enterprise?"

Riker just smiles and leaves.

humming to himself: It's been a long road, to get from there to here...

[–] psycho_driver@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago (1 children)

boner intensifies after flashback to decontamination

[–] VindictiveJudge@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

Actually, ENT being a holoprogram that Riker was running retroactively explains the decon gel scenes quite nicely.

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 1 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

I started thinking about Archer's dog as the reason Riker is happy about that and realized Janeway has a dog too, but she left her's at home. Like a fool.

[–] Davel23@kbin.social 17 points 9 months ago

Needs Pulaski. She can say she was in TOS. Twice.

[–] OpenStars@startrek.website 11 points 9 months ago

I could... uh... take you there, if you wanted.

Just step into my transporter buffer over here...

[–] samus12345@lemmy.world 9 points 9 months ago

And so will Worf.

Predestination. Great time travel movie based on a story by Robert Heinlein.

One nice thing, it's future is true to the original 1950's story, so you get a completely differnet looking 1960's and 1970s.

[–] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 5 points 9 months ago (3 children)

As long as we're posting off topic time travel stuff, I really liked this short film (20 mins)

[–] SaintWacko@midwest.social 3 points 9 months ago

Another fun one is The History of Time Travel. It's on Amazon Prime Video

[–] Dagwood222@lemm.ee 3 points 9 months ago (1 children)

2 of 2.

Just watched it. Very good. Youtube has a series of short science fictio videos under the overall title 'Dust.'

[–] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Yep, omeleto and dust are great ways of killing time at work for me

[–] Dagwood222@lemm.ee 1 points 9 months ago

'Omleto'

TIL

Thanks

[–] Dagwood222@lemm.ee 3 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I'll watch the whole thing later. Thanks

[–] Fudoshin@feddit.uk 3 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I'm going to recommend a classic time travel movie with Jean Claude van Dam: TimeCop

[–] Dagwood222@lemm.ee 1 points 9 months ago

Ron Silver was a great bad guy in that movie. 8.5/10

[–] SaintWacko@midwest.social 3 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Oh shit, the story that's based on is one of my favorites!

[–] Dagwood222@lemm.ee 2 points 9 months ago

I like to think that Heinlein, who wrote one of the first transman characters as well as as African warrior woman, is somewhere happily laughing his ass off while people try to cancel him for being a fascist.
