Let the children of the mega rich inherit the toxic land. May they all suffocate.

[–] AllonzeeLV@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

If you don't reject your parent and their blood/exploitation resources as soon as you become an adult, you inherit the blood on their hands.

No quarter for the oligarch families that caused and benefitted from this.

[–] RealBlstr@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

We ask no quarter, we hold no quarter.

Yeah, my SO and I have talked about adopting. We’d feel better about not bringing someone into this and still offering them some help in a difficult situation they’re in.

[–] Thepinyaroma@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

Also fostering, if it would be a good fit, too.

[–] mycatiskai@lemmy.one 22 points 1 year ago (4 children)

Get a vasectomy, it will calm your worries about accidents. If you can't give a child a life of safety and security where they won't suffer the consequences of a world fucked up by corporations and the rich for greed then just don't do it.

[–] UhBell@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago

Ah yes the full nuclear (nutclear) approach

[–] Sanctus@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

Yeah lets do all of this instead of organizing.

[–] MegaUltraChicken@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I never wanted or will want kids, but wanted to chime in and say the vasectomy was super easy and way less of a pain than I expected. If my wife and I ever magically change our minds (not gonna happen) we can always adopt. There's plenty of kids that need good homes out there if you want to be a parent but are worried about bringing new life into the world. Help the kids that are already here that have to experience the shit show of Earth.

Same here never wanted kids and i'm so happy with my vasectomy. No pain, very little discomfort, but it's a great excuse to spend a weekend chilling on the couch snacking and watching movies while you ice the boys and after that all you gotta worry about is stds 😎

Or tubes tied if you're female

[–] bi_tux@lemmy.world 21 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Since our planet is broken beyond repair, how about we sell it on ebay as "slightly used"

[–] assembly@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Hey no lowballers I know what I got.

[–] grandel@lemmy.ml 20 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (5 children)

There's nothing i can do personally? Thats literally the problem.

People supporting businesses that ruin the environment is the problem. Sure its not our responsibility, the government needs to make changes but until then stop eating animal products, stop flying, driving car etc.

Vote with your wallet, thats the only thing they listen to.

[–] MegaUltraChicken@lemmy.world 17 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I think corporations' efforts to shift the view of responsibility from a collective goal to an individual one is one of the biggest problems we face. Individual action is almost never as impactful as collective action. While labor is told to take personal responsibility on individual issues, capital works collectively to consolidate power and amass more wealth. Individuals cannot shift that by themselves. "Vote with your wallet" will never lead to the substantial structural changes we desperately need.

Agreed

Individual action is almost never as impactful as collective action.

Here in Germany we have a saying:

Was kann einer dagegen ausrichten? Fragte sich die halbe Menschheit.

Which roughly translates to:

What can a single person change? Half the population asked themselves.

[–] Aurenkin@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Systemic problems require systemic solutions. It's not enough to ask billions of people to independently change their spending habits unfortunately.

[–] grandel@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 year ago
[–] youpie_temp@reddthat.com 4 points 1 year ago

don't vote with your wallet. vote with your voice, organize and make change✊

[–] explodicle@local106.com 3 points 1 year ago

Controversial opinion: spend all of your time on activism and none on unilateral sacrifices that won't lead to systemic change. You've only got so much time, money, willpower, etc.

The "carbon footprint" paradigm is designed to exhaust or discredit those who actually care, so that their political impact will be reduced. The moment one suggests that we fix this global prisoner's dilemma, they're labeled a hypocrite by people who don't understand economics.

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago

Nope.

Like, I appreciate your energy, but no...

Go run for office yourself, or find someone else who has money and charisma. This is the only hope.

[–] albert69stein@sh.itjust.works 18 points 1 year ago (1 children)

My parents chose to try for kids during a time where global nuclear warfare was almost seen as a certainty.

There will always at all points in time be some doom scenario to worry about.

I mean, climate change is certainly happening. But i'd rather try and make a positive impact on things instead of feeling defeated. I'd rather go down fighting, with or without having kids.

[–] AToM_exe@lemmy.world 18 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Well, your parents were very horny. Thing is, the possibility of a nuclear war is now the same, if not even higher. And now we know that we fucked up our climate beyond repair. We know that our kids will live in a dystopian wasteland.

[–] FippleStone@aussie.zone 5 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Unpopular opinion, but we don't know that...

[–] Tak@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

We do depending on the timescale. Sure the planet can naturally sequester carbon again just like before but that is over thousands of years. For people alive right now it is beyond repair because we will all be dead by the time carbon is sequestered faster than it is added.

We know that the planet is warming, we're setting records right now for it and we know why the planet is warming because we can measure the greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere. The GHGs added to the atmosphere over my life so far will never be canceled out through the rest of my lifetime because the rate that we're adding them to the atmosphere.

We can take steps to lessen the impact and make it easier to overcome in the future but we've been doing almost everything in our power as a species to create this problem and we're casually toying with maybe doing something better but not reversing this.

We're looking at breaching the 1.5 degree limit here in the next few years and that is the start of permanent damage to certain ecosystems.

[–] Platomus@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

It's an unpopular opinion because all of the experts disagree with it.

[–] XEAL@lemm.ee 16 points 1 year ago

Fuck this shit. STOP the cycle.

[–] PeWu@lemmy.ml 12 points 1 year ago

The prospect of making kids in this planet is surreal to me. I will not condemn my kids to life I've had. It will be better anywhere they are now, even if they don't exist. I would also like to not exist, but that's whole other matter.

[–] Speculater@lemmy.world 15 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Absurdism is healthier. Nihilist are no fun to party with.

[–] DudePluto@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I live because the mountains do not laugh and the worms do not sing.

[–] Speculater@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)
[–] DudePluto@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

It's pretty awesome! I'm only like a third through it but it's so relatable already

[–] nutomic@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 year ago

Having kids is great. Don't believe all the horror stories.

[–] andyMFK@reddthat.com 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If nobody had kids and the human race died out, earth could repair itself. The only reason earth is so fucked is because of the humans.

You not having kids is literally the best thing you could possibly do for the planet

[–] SirGaston@feddit.de 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Sad but true. But since the "not so good" people will keep having kids it's necessary to counteract ;)

Those kids will have to be exposed to the world eventually (... r-right?). Converting them to help spread love based on empathy and morals rather than rhetoric seems like the fastest route in my head. Fight fascist propaganda with our own~

However, idk how to reach them lol. Memes n pray? XD

[–] encode8062@lemmy.one 2 points 1 year ago

Wow thank you. Nice video!

[–] eldain@feddit.nl 5 points 1 year ago

Kids do have impact, they were the ones protesting the loudest, they are the ones convincing their parents to try eating vegetarian and to help them out to make a better world. They are a big counterweight to the boomers and doomers of this world, if we want to save the planet, we need more, not less. We'll figure it out, for them.

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 year ago

Do you not know how often dumb people reproduce?

Go watch Idiocracy. It's not inaccurate.

[–] RDrew@ttrpg.network 2 points 1 year ago (3 children)

We truly are living in the worst timeline, aren’t we?

[–] Brickhead92@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I don't think it's the worst timeline, 'cause things can always be worse.

I think we're leaving in the dumbest timeline.

[–] RDrew@ttrpg.network 3 points 1 year ago

Yeah, you’re probably right

[–] Jimbo@yiffit.net 7 points 1 year ago

If we were in the worst timeline we would already be in a nuclear hellscape

Plenty of time to still fuck it up more though!

[–] GBU_28@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

No, if we consider recent disasters, COVID could have killed everyone, "the stand" style.
